Joe Kirkish had a tough winter, not feeling well enough to get out and snap many photos, so this past week when he made his first drive to Copper Harbor for the year, it felt good to be out and about again. Joe took advantage of the all day sunshine and stopped at one of his favorite places, Great Sand Bay to snap some shots.

Starting with the actual Bay and a bit of exposed beach with a pool of melted ice, Joe progressed down to the beach area to capture some weathered pine cones on the beach, along with patterns and textures formed in the snow from wind and melting. Especially interesting to me, are the footprint photos. Joe described them as "dying on the Great Sand Bay beach"…and then the one fresh track alongside one of the "dying" prints as the sun and wind continue to melt it away. Joe felt the photos were mostly disappointing, but par for mid-February. I disagree, yes, they are the norm for this time of year, but far from disappointing, for sure.

Love the blue of the sky mixed with the white of the
snow. Great pictures! Thanks!

I love your photos, Joe! It's been a very long
time since I was in the Keweenaw in winter. I
remember how beautiful it was at that time of the
year, however. I always thought it was extra
beautiful when the sun was shining, making a
beautiful contrast of the snow against the sky or
the lake. Beautiful!
