Zachary Fryer took advantage of one of the sunny, clear days recently to snap a few photos in the Marquette area. He stopped at the State of Michigan Welcome Center on US-41 in Harvey to take in these views across Lake Superior.

The first one is looking northwest toward the downtown area, populated with buildings and of course the old Lower Harbor Ore Dock. The second view is Presque Isle and the Marquette Lighthouse to the north. I like that one, as it gives you a good perspective of the size of Presque Isle in the distance.

The remaining photos are taken from the North Country Trail, which is a lakefront path for walking, running, bike riding, etc., in the summer and the snowmobile trail in the winter. Zachary noted that the water was relatively calm and an interesting color, possibly because it was just above freezing that day. He also added that a significant part of the harbor area seen here has since frozen over.

Nice pictures!! As much as I'm not a fan of
winter, I have to admit that it makes for some
breathtaking pictures!!

What a great way to start the day! Beautiful!

Yes, UC, the hockey program has really gone downhill since our days at NMU!

Looking back through "19 years of the Pasty Cam on this day", the old shack (2006) caught my eye. I didn't remember it at first, then I checked the original page …
see (click →) Past-E-Mail: Cam Notes - 2006: January: Jan 21-06.

Toivo's note triggered a smile, as I remember that Saturday tradition too, "as a young poika (boy) on isoisän tilalla (Grandpa's farm)" …:

Quote:

It was a Saturday tradition for me to help my isoisä with his chores, which of course included several trips to haul the wood for our weekly sauna night.

1. I wonder where's Toivo ten years later? (Ten years! How time flies!)

"Just moments away from the Polar Bear Dive! …"

Isn't it close to that time? No Polar Bear Dives any more?

Nice pix! With all that open water, perhaps the ice is to unsafe for the dive?

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Saturday, January 21, 2017 - 09:36 pm:

Hmmm, good point Alex. Maybe they'd have to do a swan dive off the ore dock!

Great. Thanks 4 sharing.

Was looking at the sign for the North Country Trail. Of course, have been to Tourist Park many times, but what does the TH mean?

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Sunday, January 22, 2017 - 10:20 am:

Trail Head?

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Sunday, January 22, 2017 - 10:55 am:

Hey, that's a good guess Alex! Thanks!

Check out TH on this page:

(you may have to cut and paste in Google)

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Sunday, January 22, 2017 - 06:39 pm:

Spot on, Alex!

I guess i never thought of Tourist Park even having a trail head. But that's probably a function of being away too long.

Hi all - thanks for all the compliments! These were taken on a cold beautiful day, and I wasn't expecting that April weather was going to follow so soon! The harbor was about ready to freeze over that day, and parts of it were frozen the next, but I think it's all back to open water now - kinda hard to tell with the fog we're having. Tonight we had around 200 yards of visibility in this area. But it's Michigan so we should be back to 10 degrees in a week. :)
