Brimley is located over on the eastern end of the U.P., near Sault Ste. Marie and they've been getting hit pretty well with heavy snowfalls and frigid temperatures, too. That doesn't stop Brenda Leigh though, when she decides it's time to get outside for a snowshoe hike, she just does it.

These pictures were taken Wednesday, with blowing snow and single digit temps on her hike around Monocle Lake, to the lookout over Spectacle Lake. If the snow wasn't obliterating the view in the distance, you'd be seeing Lake Superior and Canada on the other side of it. Brenda says it is a breathtaking experience to be at the top of Mission Hill during any season and I tend to agree, what a view!

To get there, Brenda took a trail that hikes the length Monocle Lake and at the south end of the lake the trail begins to ascend UP. She said there are about four or five switchbacks and the grade is tough even with hiking boots on a cool Spring day, but tougher making the ascent with snowshoes on. Brenda carried a long, walking stick with her and said she doesn't think she'd have made it otherwise. All in a day's hike though, when you know the reward is going to be such a beautiful scene. I can just imagine how peaceful it must have been UP there at the top, minus the blustery winds of course.

Hi
Though my joy and experience is with cross-country skis, it looks like snowshoes were a better choice for that trail.

I love the snow pictures, sure isn't what we have in SE Michigan.

Great photos. Snowshoeing is one of my favorite
winter activities.

Thanks for the pictures, Brenda. My Dad & Mom would bring
the 4 of us kids up to Brimley nearly every summer. We would
fish mostly on the Lake, but we also toured around the area to
see the lighthouse, Lake Monocle, Indian Burial Grounds, the
Locks at the Sault, eat smoked fish, etc... We stayed in Erv
Baker's cabins.
