Sunday's Day in History reminded me of a recent trip up Mt Horace Greeley to turn up some new equipment for Pasty.NET as part of our ongoing improvements. It has been awhile since they started hauling off the homes on Easy Street, but if you compare the two satellite photos you'll see about 7 or 8 houses missing, along with their garages and utility buildings. As I drove past that former neighborhood, I realized that all of the buildings have been cleared. The other neighborhoods appeared to still have the original structures.

We are discovering that more old photos are coming online as scanner use continues to grow. If you have become aware of any photos from the old radar base, please email a link or attachment that we could share here, remembering the service of the military and civilian personnel who worked here back in the Cold War days.

Have a good week :o)

When I was stationed at Grand Forks, ND in the late 1970's, the First Sergent I had was transferred to this radar base.

Are they selling off the houses to civilians? Are the roads even large enough to move a house out?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, April 11, 2016 - 08:19 am:

Very interesting!! I always wondered what happened
to all of those houses. I, too, wonder how they got
them out of there. Every time we pass the area I
think about that time when the base was there.

I had cousins that were up on that base. Way
cool..then it closed. And turned into a juvenile
delinquent home...which was closed and trashed.
now....I THINK some of the homes have been moved to
Gay for the campground being built out there.....

The NCO Club at the base used to be a favorite stop during snowmobile season, it was open to the public the last few yrs. that the base was open. I'm not sure why the National Weather Service radar in Negaunee wasn't placed at Horace Greeley which would be a much better location; but I think that it was something political.

One of the street names near the upper edge of the third picture: "Findland St."

Really???

We lived there when I was in first and second grade in the house
next to the Commander's. My dad worked in the radar tower. I have
some of the best memories living on that base!

During the late 50's through most of the 60's, the air base assigned a life guard to the Eagle Harbor beach. I recall that some jets would fly low over Mt. Baldy practicing to get "under the radar." We would hear the roar then see the jets had already passed over. They seemed a whole lot closer than they were.

In Lake Linden we used to see them flying
right over us also. It was so much fun to
see them so close.
