Bob Gilreath and his wife Liz, were guests on their friend's pontoon boat recently for a tour of Houghton County's version of the Pictured Rocks out from the Upper Entry to the Keweenaw Waterway. I wonder how many folks even know these Freda sandstone cliffs and waterfalls are there, since unless you get out in a boat and cruise the Lake Superior shoreline in this area, you'd never know they exist. This might be a good business prospect to start UP if you're an ambitious entrepreneur. I'm betting there would be more than a few folks who'd like to take a boat tour of the natural beauty of the shoreline of Lake Superior on the Upper and Lower Entries.

The Big Lake sure has a varied shoreline, but you'll find sandstone on this Freda side of the Keweenaw, as well as on the Jacobsville side. Then up toward the Keweenaw tip, it is scattered with rock picking delights, such as agates and thomsonite. We sure are blessed with plenty of natural beauty here UP North.

Beautiful, especially the waterfalls.

Wow! How beautiful that shoreline is. I would love for someone to start boat tours there. It would be a great thing to look forward to on future visits.

Thanks for the ride, Bob! Pontoon cruising is one of the most relaxing ways to do it, especially with sunny blue skies, shoes off and feet up...it doesn't get much better.

By Bob Gilreath (Bobg252) on Tuesday, August 4, 2015 - 07:55 am:

Mary, these are south west of the NORTH entry and are not Jacobsville sandstone. These are from the Freda Sandstone Formation, (just learned that from Bill Rose on the Keweenaw geology trip last week).

I too am surprised that Houghton or Hancock or the Keweenaw tourism council does not promote these.

To get there go out the north entry and turn left, these extend from just past the entry, all the way down past Freda.

Mary says WOW, Bob...I didn't realize that...I just assumed it was the Jacobsville cliffs, but now that I think about it, I've featured wintertime photos of the Freda Sandstone cliffs before. Thanks for setting it straight for me. I'll fix that in my notes!

Great pictures. Thanks for sharing the adventure. A flat lake makes it all the more enjoyable.

Our cottage is in Aura on Keweenaw Bay (north of L'Anse). We look westward to cliffs like this across the bay. When the sun hits them in the morning, the glow is not to be believed! My husband tells everyone that we experience both sunrises and sunsets looking out our living room window!
