Philip Odum was in the Straits of Mackinac area and snapped some pictures to share with us. It's always good to see the Mackinac Bridge, no matter the weather. I really like this one with the sun shining and yet you can see the wind blowing the snow across the ice.

The remaining pictures give you a good idea of the ice coverage on Great Lakes now, too. The second photo is the Philip R. Clarke, which is also in the bottom photo, stranded in the straits of Mackinac. It's really tough going on the Lake this time of year. The season is closing for the year this week, and I can only imagine the relief these sailors feel getting off the Great Lakes for the rest of the cold winter months.

These photos cause mixed emotions ~ beautiful to look at but sad seeing those big 'boats' attempting to make it through the ice.
Thanks, Philip.

No matter how much money those who work on the Lakes this time of the year make it is not enough.
Great pictures, thanks for sharing.

According to the Weather Channel this morning, Lake Superior is at about 20 percent ice coverage, Lake Huron at 44 percent, and Lake Michigan at 27 percent. Supposedly there is more ice overall on the Great Lakes this year at this time than last year; I wonder if there will be growlers and bergie bits on Superior in June like last year??

By James W. Hird (Wvyooper) on Friday, January 16, 2015 - 06:10 pm:

OK for us uninformed Just what are Growlers and bergie bits. The only GROWLERS I am familiar with are gallons of BEER from KBC. As for bergie bits how about small burgers?. I prefer mine with bacon and cheese.

A thank you to Capt. Paul from the uninformed. I really do think I prefere my definitions. Much better flavor.

How about the little ice slivers that make the wind chime noise at the short. Any name for them?

Thanks Capt. Paul.

New terminology for me to use on my gulf coast family and
friends.
