A shot of the lilacs next door made the picture of the day on the Pasty Cam eight years ago. Lilacs have appeared since then in several notable spots around the U.P., from a number of guest photographers.

Here's a side note for longtime Pasty Central visitors. The original registration of this website occurred on this day in 1996. Our first page had pictures of the snow thermometer on US-41.

Good morning! I can smell the lilacs. Our lilacs are gone. Hope things are getting better at your place Mike.

Sorry to see you have the Early Bird, Mikie. That can only mean one
thing--you must have been "Sleepless in the Lower Peninsula."

One day I hope to spend Lilac Time on Mackinac Island. Wouldn't
that be grand?

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, May 31, 2007 - 06:36 am:

Good Morning, Everyone!

Mikie, you were up too early this morning! I'm sorry that you and Precious must have had another not good night. I hope you can get some rest & feel better soon! Congrats on your second Early Bird in a row, anyway!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, May 31, 2007 - 06:54 am:

Mikie, two in a row. Sorry to see you're still in so much pain.

Good morning everyone! It's off to the zoo with the 2nd graders this morning. I have 2 grandchildren in the 2nd grade and have been invited to chaperone. I'm betting I'm going to think that they have the wrong animals in the cages before I leave. LOL

By Vicky P (Vickyp) on Thursday, May 31, 2007 - 07:16 am:

Good Morning. Have a great time at the Zoo Deb! Hope you're able to get some sleep today Mike. One more work day left!

Good morning from overcast central Indiana. It's difficult to find anything to compare with the fragrance of lilacs!

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Thursday, May 31, 2007 - 08:22 am:

Good Morning! Have fun at the zoo, Deb. I should probably wish you luck with that adventure also!

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Thursday, May 31, 2007 - 08:43 am:

Good Morning from East Tennessee where we could use some rain.

You know I been thinking of you Mikie and Precious. It goes without saying always from this end.I wish I did come your way to see you back earlier this month, but Son wanted to go at the last minute with his Mom.Was a good thing too.The Commander was full of daughter's things after here a year.Once unloaded in Hazel Park,MI.the transmission went, only had around 4 thousand miles for a 2007,was a rental,so they were put into a Mercury Gran Marc with 400 miles on it from over on 15 mile Rd.same rental place as we started with here in TN.Well along the way home they had a problem with it,and ended up getting home in a Toyota SRV 5.Thanks to a friend at the rental place the whole cost was $20.some dollars. When I do get up that way ya know I'll look you up friend.

drug recall alert:

I received an email, so apologies if it is not accurate or reflects a hoax, but it sounded scary, so I'll pass it along.

This email said that phenylpropanolamine (PPA) is 'suggested' by the FDA to be withdrawn from the market because it can cause brain hemmoraging or stroke.

It can be found in most over-the-counter cold remedies and in some weight-loss products.

Worth checking out before you take one!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, May 31, 2007 - 10:28 am:

Looks like Mary and Charlie were up early today also, I was up moving Precious around and decided to see if anyone was on this site. Low and behold they were. A lot of the pain has subsided in me but is getting worse in Precious. Looks like we wont be up for the Fourth since we wont be driving yet. On a happy note I won $5 on a lottery scratch off. Makes me feel good.

By Bob Jewell, Farmington Hills (Rjewell) on Thursday, May 31, 2007 - 10:30 am:

Maija;
The drug recall alert is outdated. It happened in 2000. The FDA asked manufacturers to reformat their OTC medicines to remove PPA. That happened a long time ago.

By Betty Paull Colborn,AZ (Betty) on Thursday, May 31, 2007 - 02:17 pm:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TIM IN OSCODA!! Hope you have a great day.
Mikie - still praying for you both for a speedy recovery. Congratulations again on getting the early bird. Sorry you can't sleep tho.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Thursday, May 31, 2007 - 02:31 pm:

thanks Rjewell: you saved me time passing this on to everyone!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, May 31, 2007 - 04:02 pm:

Happy birthday Tim, 29? Thanks Betty, feeling a little better today. Michelle went home to Manistee and I am going to miss her son St. Brendan, nicest three year old I know. Never been hugged so much as the last week. Now our other daughter is taking over and she isn't as easy to fool as Michelle is. Dani is a school teacher and will make sure we do everything the doctors say. Precious friend Cindi is also taking over the med stuff since she is in the field. I guess I have rambled on enough.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, May 31, 2007 - 04:25 pm:

Mikie...sounds like you are in good hands. I think hugs from a three year old grandson are the BEST medicine.

Pray that the Quincy Smelter is restored soon. If not, it will by city and township resolution be raised

By Richard A. Fields (Cherokeeyooper) on Thursday, May 31, 2007 - 05:58 pm:

As I cruise around the internet, I sometimes run across something that refers to the Copper Country in the oddest places or ways. Today I was On Boing Boing and they had a story that referenced the Tamarack Mines Experiment. I had never heard of it so I looked into it. Apparently J.B. Watson suspended plumb lines into the Tamarck mine in an experiment that showed they were farther apart at the bottom than expected (they thought they would be closer). This is a famous experiment in physics, but new to me. If you want to learn more, here is a link. (http://www.lhup.edu/~dsimanek/hollow/tamarack.htm) I am amazed at the important people and events that occurred during mining's hey day in the U.P. Sometimes I think they were just more ambitious than us. Of course, they did not have TV, the internet, or the Green Bay Packers to distract them!

By Bob Jewell, Farmington Hills (Rjewell) on Thursday, May 31, 2007 - 07:10 pm:

Richard
Michigan Tech has some articles on there website about the experiment. Here is one that is from the Mining Journal at the time.
