Charlie at Pasty Central on Thursday, December 19, 2002 - 08:18 am:

Most of us who live here in the western U.P. make the pilgrimage to Marquette at least once during the holiday shopping season. Ontonagon's Z-Man took a break from the crowded malling, and sought a little serenity in the Park.

One of my favorite photos from the new Pasty Cam 2003 calendar is the back cover, a shot from the Z-Man we saw on these pages in October. It actually would make a pretty nice picture to frame and put on the wall.

Leaves

Here, here...the autumn leaf picture is with great contrast and color. Glad that it made the calendar.

By Bob, Ohio on Thursday, December 19, 2002 - 08:52 am:

Love the deer warning sign, it just became my computer wallpaper. I'm planning a motorcycle trip through the UP for this summer, can't wait to get above the bridge again. Happy Holidays to all from a transplanted Michigander.

By SAC,Metro Detroit on Thursday, December 19, 2002 - 09:30 am:

Though I always enjoy seeing all the photos of the UP I get especially homesick when I see something from Mqt county. Having grown up 1 block from "the" lake and summering in a cottage on "the" (Superior of course!), I love to see scenes from home. Don't let all the snow melt, we'll be up to ski in one week. Thanks for a very great year of photos, I come by your site almost every day. If I miss a few, I always take time to wander through the archives. Merry Christmas to all the good folks at Pasty.com and a very great big wish for a glorious new year!

By Kate, CA on Thursday, December 19, 2002 - 09:47 am:

Would love to see some more photos from Presque
Isle, Zman. Like others, I spent many hours at the
park participating in one form of recreation or
another! ;-) (Isn't that where they have the
U.P. submarine races?) Ahhhhh, you're takin' me
back to my reckless youth.

By Marc, Illinois on Thursday, December 19, 2002 - 09:57 am:

I too check the site daily and change my screen saver and background several times a week using pictures from Pasty.com. Being from MQT (grew up 2 blocks from Gitchee-Gummee), having a camp in Republic, and graduating from NMU, I am especially fond of the pictures from the central U.P. Thanks so much for making someone who is stuck in Illinois think of home everyday. Have a great Holiday season and a great New Year.

If anyone knows of a website with pictures from the Marquette area, please let me know.

By yoopertransplant on Thursday, December 19, 2002 - 10:14 am:

Oh deer, defacing government property. lol :-)

By tlg, MI on Thursday, December 19, 2002 - 10:21 am:

To Kate, CA

I've also been to Presque Isle a couple of times in my younger days. Did your name used to be Linda? ;-)

By Vicki, Texas on Thursday, December 19, 2002 - 11:12 am:

Cute!

By Anna, OH on Thursday, December 19, 2002 - 12:44 pm:

As a NMU student I walked to "the lake" almost every night after dinner and spent LOTS of time at Presque Isle (maybe even a submarine race or two). My most favorite memory is walking the perimeter in winter during a soft snowfall. I fell in love with the place during a visit to Marquette at the ripe old age of 9. My love affair continues and I've passed it on to my kids who's first desire when we're in Marquette is to go out there.

By Kate - Ann Arbor MI on Thursday, December 19, 2002 - 01:10 pm:

Just how do they get those deer to cross at the signs?!

By Melissa, Grand Ledge, MI on Thursday, December 19, 2002 - 02:44 pm:

Presque Isle Park! Do the albino deer still live there?

By Greta, Milwaukee on Thursday, December 19, 2002 - 03:46 pm:

I don't know about the albino deer, but one winter I went on a patrol to keep the park free of snow snakes.

By Ann, Illinois, once Marquette on Thursday, December 19, 2002 - 07:14 pm:

Nice to see all the Marquette natives pop up when Presque Isle Park shows up on the pastycam. Interesting that we all lived two blocks from the lake! Anyone else class of 66? For more lovely Marquette photos, check out http://www.androspray.com/marquette.html
Yes, there are still albino deer, but there's been a lot of deliberate thinning of the herd so generally there are a lot fewer deer on "the island" these days.
For yoopers (or anyone else) looking for another outdoor hobby, check out www.letterboxing.org. There are two hidden at Presque Isle, one at Copper Harbor, and lots elsewhere in the U.P.

By Ann again on Thursday, December 19, 2002 - 07:17 pm:

p.s. the androspray site includes a photo of an albino deer!

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Thursday, December 19, 2002 - 08:19 pm:

Anyone in Ann Arbor know a Pharmacist named Paul Keckonen?

By Miz Annie, UP on Thursday, December 19, 2002 - 09:12 pm:

An article "Making Changes at Presque Isle Park" concerning erosion and possible solutions is on www.wluctv6.com Dec. 19, 2002.

By Helen MI on Thursday, December 19, 2002 - 09:26 pm:

Real nice picture Zman, you do very good work!!
I hope this one makes the Calendar next year that would be great.

By Suzy, Taegu, South Korea on Thursday, December 19, 2002 - 09:59 pm:

Thank you all for maintaining this website... I am from Calumet and I am stationed in Korea at this time...any pictures of the Lake and snow would be most welcome- I miss them both!

By Ken from da UP on Thursday, December 19, 2002 - 11:16 pm:

I've seen the Rudolph sign on Presque Isle. Makes you smile. :o) But , beware! They don't all cross at the signs. Nice work, Z-Man!

By The Z-Man, Ontonagon,Mi on Friday, December 20, 2002 - 12:20 am:

Stay tune we will go have a look over the cliff!!

Have a merry Christmas
The Z-Man

By Alex Tiensivu on Friday, December 20, 2002 - 02:09 am:

I would LOVE to see that very scene from the OTHER side of the sign... Looks absolutely beautiful!

By Lowell Mo on Friday, December 20, 2002 - 03:31 am:

Didn't see any snow snakes in those pics at that web site. Guess the albino deer always blend in with the snow AY

By Melissa, Grand Ledge, MI on Friday, December 20, 2002 - 09:56 am:

Ann from IL: Thanks for the link to the albino deer picture! I also found the letterboxing site very interesting. It looks like a fun hobby.

By Frank C, NE Illinois on Friday, December 20, 2002 - 11:20 am:

Suzy, how about live/almost live webcams for your daily visual fix on the U.P.? See John Dee's site and click on NCN on the left (Northwoods Cam Network).

Enjoy!

By Kate - Ann Arbor MI on Friday, December 20, 2002 - 11:55 am:

Alex in Georgia, sorry I do not know Pharmacist Paul. Is he at U of M or a private store?

By Phil, Manton, MI on Friday, December 20, 2002 - 12:47 pm:

To Suzy in South Korea, Don't eat too much Kimche over there, Thats nowhere near like a Pasty, I'm sure you know that by now. Have a nice holiday season there, I spent one there myself once.

By P. Keckonen Miller, Nashville, TN on Friday, December 20, 2002 - 09:12 pm:

To Alex in GA, re Paul Keckonen. I don't know him, but we must have some family history together. My grandfather was Paul Keckonen. My great grandfather, also Paul Keckonen immigrated from Finland and raised their families in Gay, MI Still have relatives in Gay. Most of the children in the family moved to lower Michigan for work. So I still have family in that part of the state.

By Barbara in Southern Indiana on Friday, December 20, 2002 - 11:30 pm:

Presque Isle is my favorite place in Marquette. We are introducing it to each of our grandchildren and enjoying it through their young eyes. Thank you for the pictures from there to remind me of my second home [we were there with the USAF in the early '60's] Also interested in the letterboxing, have bookmarked the site, have already been carving stamps for years, and now a unique way to use them.

Lee, How do you go about finding immigration records??

By Lee on Sunday, December 22, 2002 - 09:04 am:

HI Mike
Finland has several wonderful sites for searching for ancestry.
The Institue of Migration is one,
http://www.utu.fi/erill/instmigr/index_e.htm
Go to emigrant register, then pick either passport or passenger information.Type in your last name to search all immigrants with the name or your specific name if you know the spelling.
It also has a search for reference records, taken from the church calendars and papers.
http://www.mfhn.com/houghton/
The above site is for local genealogy! Great search engine and query boards to post for help.

My name is Paul Keckonen, great-grandson of Paul Keckonen. The Paul Alex was asking about is my/our cousin. I believe he lives in Howell michigan, I have not seen him since I was a kid though.

I like pasty address. I'm yearning for a good U.P. pasty. Been several years since I've been back to Marquette County. Looking forward to Finn Fest to be held in Marquette in 2005. Grew up on US41 between Marquette and Negaunee. Attended Mich. Tech and Northern Michigan University. Planning to vacation in Finland next summer and work on genealogy--Found this site showing Presque Isle--my favorite spot-used to walk out out on the breakwater towards lighthouse. Recently heard about Silver Lake Dam breaking and damage all the way to Lake Superior. I used to swim in Dead River at a camp along the river in Negaunee Township. That was probably washed out.
Beautiful pictures! My heart will always remain in Marquette County and the Copper Country.
