These underwater ice diving photos were taken in the vicinity of the old Bear Pit Cabins located between Eagle Harbor and Copper Harbor. The first was during an ice dive in 1982, scuba diver Judd Smith of Wausau, Wi. That year was phenomenal for cold and beautiful ice formations along the Keweenaw shoreline.

The second picture is Bill Siler of Houghton,MI. The underwater shot was taken in March of 1996. If this years weather remains cold thru January & February, we will have the right conditions to get these kind of formations.

Charlie has threatened to make the 2004 Pasty Cam Calendar the "Swimsuit Edition". This is just more ammunition.

Alright Toivo! I think Charlie has a cool idea, no doubt it would be the most popular. If this is winter wardrobe what will these girls be wearing in July? They don't even look cold. I'll be waiting for later developments.
It looks like this picture was taken somewhere in Traprock Valley. That must be the latest site where the models meet.

It is the largest freshwater body in the world, and it is third largest by volume.
The shoreline and islands that rim the lake stretch 2,726 miles

The average temp of the lake in winter?Solid or close to it.The average temp in summer? Tooth chattering.

And a bunch of Finns just can't wait to jump into it.

Don't know how many people refer back a few days to the daily comments so I wanted to share what I posted a day late regarding the UP and earthquakes. My year was correct, but apparently the tremors were felt even farther...(all the way to Marquette). However, according to the URL below, there was earthquake activity even in 1947. So in case you're interested, here is my old post as well as the url ....enjoy.

If I am remembering my information correctly, there was a notable earthquake that was felt here in Lake Linden way back in 1905. I think it may have even been felt as far North as Copper Harbor. Since we're plugging MTU, and professors and such, I believe that tidbit of information came from Dr. Larry Lankton's class Copper Country History. If my memory serves me correctly it was mistaken for a mining blast, but then mining officials and workers later said that there were no charges set at the time of the quake. That is likely the last effects of any earthquakes in this area...

Wow Mark, I dove with you way back in 1975 or 1976, in the winter, at Belle Grise (sp?). I still have a knife I found on the bottom off the breakwall in my toolbox - in fact I showed it to my 8 year old son and explained where I got it a few weeks ago when we were putting up lights and he seemed impressed.

The Chrysler car exhibit you were working on over at Eagle Harbor looks great - I visited with my wife and daughter last summer.

I sure feel old these days, it seems like yesterday.

I too am very concerned about our beloved Keweenaw becoming another "Door County, Wisconsin" or "Traverse City, Mi.". If you have ever been in Door County you will know what I mean. The big city "Yuppies" have taken over and the once beutiful area is overrun. Towns like Egg Harbor have so much traffic that it is hard to cross the street. Imagine that in Copper Harbor!. Fortunately, the Keweenaw (which I define as Keweenaw County, the rest is the Copper Country) is remote enough that it will limit development somewhat, although it won't protect it completely. Those that want development to create jobs and add to the tax base are misguided because visitors come to the area to see and experience wilderness, not to see wall to wall "trophy homes". If the wilderness is gone, so will many of the visitors also be gone.

maybe with raising the bridge toll we wont have so many trolls coming up here.i dont agree with the raising of it.lots of people dont like the cold mi weather either so if they do come its just for summer living.i dont like lots of people around either.

I have a picture of Grandma Tiensivu for the Swimsuit calendar... I'm not sure it would sell too well though! :)

Re development. Please write the Chamber of Commerce! People come up here to see the "wilderness" and the colors, not the McHouses and people. If "development" takes over then the lure for the tourists will be lost. Pray for COLD WEATHER, COLD BIG LAKE, MOSQUITOES AND BLACK FLIES!!!!!
