These underwater ice diving photos were taken in the vicinity of the old Bear Pit Cabins located between Eagle Harbor and Copper Harbor. The first was during an ice dive in 1982, scuba diver Judd Smith of Wausau, Wi. That year was phenomenal for cold and beautiful ice formations along the Keweenaw shoreline.

The second picture is Bill Siler of Houghton,MI. The underwater shot was taken in March of 1996. If this years weather remains cold thru January & February, we will have the right conditions to get these kind of formations.

Charlie has threatened to make the 2004 Pasty Cam Calendar the "Swimsuit Edition". This is just more ammunition.

In case you missed it yesterday, I just want to repeat the info that the MTU webcams are up again at: http://www.admin.mtu.edu/alumni/cams/ .
They're even in focus today.

By Phil, Manton, MI on Thursday, December 12, 2002 - 01:18 pm:

Alright Toivo! I think Charlie has a cool idea, no doubt it would be the most popular. If this is winter wardrobe what will these girls be wearing in July? They don't even look cold. I'll be waiting for later developments.
It looks like this picture was taken somewhere in Traprock Valley. That must be the latest site where the models meet.

By Suzanne, T.R. Michigan on Thursday, December 12, 2002 - 01:57 pm:

My teeth are chattering just looking at these pictures!!! What's the average temp for Lake Superior in the winter?

By KH on Thursday, December 12, 2002 - 02:18 pm:

Phil, that *is* July!

Don't know how many people refer back a few days to the daily comments so I wanted to share what I posted a day late regarding the UP and earthquakes. My year was correct, but apparently the tremors were felt even farther...(all the way to Marquette). However, according to the URL below, there was earthquake activity even in 1947. So in case you're interested, here is my old post as well as the url ....enjoy.

If I am remembering my information correctly, there was a notable earthquake that was felt here in Lake Linden way back in 1905. I think it may have even been felt as far North as Copper Harbor. Since we're plugging MTU, and professors and such, I believe that tidbit of information came from Dr. Larry Lankton's class Copper Country History. If my memory serves me correctly it was mistaken for a mining blast, but then mining officials and workers later said that there were no charges set at the time of the quake. That is likely the last effects of any earthquakes in this area...

WOW, I'm awe struck with what the beauty must have been in real time. I think I may have to take up a new hobby!

You can find the current temperature of Lake Superior on this website http://www.coastwatch.msu.edu/superior/s2.html

By JoeBob, Warm&Sunny Texas on Thursday, December 12, 2002 - 06:31 pm:

Wow Mark, I dove with you way back in 1975 or 1976, in the winter, at Belle Grise (sp?). I still have a knife I found on the bottom off the breakwall in my toolbox - in fact I showed it to my 8 year old son and explained where I got it a few weeks ago when we were putting up lights and he seemed impressed.

The Chrysler car exhibit you were working on over at Eagle Harbor looks great - I visited with my wife and daughter last summer.

I sure feel old these days, it seems like yesterday.

By Ned, Kingsford, MTU '71 on Thursday, December 12, 2002 - 08:17 pm:

I too am very concerned about our beloved Keweenaw becoming another "Door County, Wisconsin" or "Traverse City, Mi.". If you have ever been in Door County you will know what I mean. The big city "Yuppies" have taken over and the once beutiful area is overrun. Towns like Egg Harbor have so much traffic that it is hard to cross the street. Imagine that in Copper Harbor!. Fortunately, the Keweenaw (which I define as Keweenaw County, the rest is the Copper Country) is remote enough that it will limit development somewhat, although it won't protect it completely. Those that want development to create jobs and add to the tax base are misguided because visitors come to the area to see and experience wilderness, not to see wall to wall "trophy homes". If the wilderness is gone, so will many of the visitors also be gone.

maybe with raising the bridge toll we wont have so many trolls coming up here.i dont agree with the raising of it.lots of people dont like the cold mi weather either so if they do come its just for summer living.i dont like lots of people around either.

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Thursday, December 12, 2002 - 08:56 pm:

I have a picture of Grandma Tiensivu for the Swimsuit calendar... I'm not sure it would sell too well though! :)

By EM,MI on Thursday, December 12, 2002 - 10:12 pm:

Alex was that nice?

By AimeeR on Friday, December 13, 2002 - 12:31 am:

I was very happy to see the date of the polar bear swim for this winter! I can't wait! WOO HOO! (follow Charlie's link above)

By Alice Arwezon, Alaska on Friday, December 13, 2002 - 12:56 am:

Thanks, MM, Lake Linden MTU Student, for mentioning the earthquake related messages from Tuesday. Somehow I missed those.

For anyone interested in the latest Alaskan earthquake (November 3), see www.aeic.alaska.edu/seis/ A very interesting quake which opened the fault line for 145 miles or
so.

This website is better then watching TV or other things. Humor,Historical facts, lots of good information and best of all all the nice pictures.

By kb on Friday, December 13, 2002 - 07:31 am:

does anyone know who these brave bathing beautys are?

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Friday, December 13, 2002 - 11:25 am:

They are probably in a Sauna somewhere, trying to defrost! BRAVE was certainly the right word to use!

(To EM... No it wasn't! I couldn't resist, because it just sounded like something SHE would have said! Very funny lady, she was!)

Alex

By Phil, Manton, MI on Friday, December 13, 2002 - 12:47 pm:

TO ALEX,,,,I knew your grandmother, she was a sweetheart and also quite humorous, I'm sure she would have went along with the joke and had some fun with it.

By Alex on Friday, December 13, 2002 - 01:45 pm:

I'm sure she would have said, "Get that picture on a calendar!" (It still blows my mind how many people on here know my family).

By Frank C, NE Illinois on Friday, December 13, 2002 - 02:06 pm:

Charlie, that pix of the guy jumping into the icy water MADE MY DAY, had me laughing so hard. Made me cold just thinking about it...can't wait 'til the dozen Pasty Central pasties (and the PC calendar!) I ordered arrive next week to help warm me up.

By JAD, Oskar on Friday, December 13, 2002 - 02:54 pm:

Charlie -- that guy wasn't jumping! He was trying to fly over the water!
Re development. Please write the Chamber of Commerce! People come up here to see the "wilderness" and the colors, not the McHouses and people. If "development" takes over then the lure for the tourists will be lost. Pray for COLD WEATHER, COLD BIG LAKE, MOSQUITOES AND BLACK FLIES!!!!!

By froggy on Friday, December 13, 2002 - 03:21 pm:

To Ned- your observations are accurate. To rt- I dont think a bridge toll means alot to a guy in a Lexus and a "trophy home"

By Menominee, Mi on Friday, December 13, 2002 - 06:36 pm:

Sure look forward to my new pictures EVERY DAY! I really love this site. I am on it all times of the day. I always look forward to my new picture. keep up the good work.

By Ken from da UP on Friday, December 13, 2002 - 09:27 pm:

Where's the Friday pastycam pic? If Charlie is gone again, where's Toivo? I think I'm into withdrawl symptoms! How can you be so calm??

By Toivo from Toivola on Friday, December 13, 2002 - 10:16 pm:

Relax, Ken. Charlie told me today was some kind of record for pasty deliveries all over the country, and that next week will be even bigger, which keeps the crew busy. I been takin' advantage of the wondermous warm weather today to make a little more wood, but rest assured your daily U.P. glimpse is on the way. In the meantime, here's a couple more icy oldies to keep you warm:

GO!

Well maybe the stock market hicup will slow people down. Any idiot seemed to make money in the 1990's in the stock market. With all that extra money, I think everyone thought they should have a $1,000,000 "Camp." Who says a good depression can't keep things in line!!
