I recently photographed the Ontonagon Class of 2003 at Lake of the Clouds and stayed afterwards to do some cliff hanging in a snowstorm. It's a neat effect to show the perspective and depth of the Carp River Valley.

Beautiful pictures. I can feel the mist.

A nice looking group of the U.P.'s finest, our young people. If they know how important it is to get out and vote, then WE should also know the importance of casting our vote today. And were you really hanging from a rope to capture that great shot? Good day to hang! The candidates are hanging today, too!

I want that second pic as a WOW!! Beautiful! Such atmosphere and depth - and different from anything else I've seen here. Just beautiful!

BEAUTIFUL!!!! Sounds scary--cliff hanging. Can you tell us more about it Dan?
DON'T FORGET TO VOTE!

Nice place for a class picture. I think ours was in front of the Agassiz statue in Calumet, 1986. I think they used a ladder truck to get an above view. Mr Nordine took it, as I remember. Anybody else from the class that can refresh my memory?

I can almost smell the air feel the snow and taste the u.p.

Pictures like this make me really homesick. I miss the change in seasons. We are still in the mid 80's.

I once took a picture of Grand Canyon as it was snowing, and the effect was pretty also and somewhat similar to Dan's photo, although not with the professionalism of his. Great photos!

Saw a few snowflakes here today, mixed in with the rain!

Does anyone else see the young Afro-American gazing outward from the upper right corner of Dan's photo?

By RCW $ Bay on Tuesday, November 5, 2002 - 08:27 pm:

Almost looks like a Sphinx????

By MES on Tuesday, November 5, 2002 - 09:49 pm:

Great looking class. Looks like about 38.
Over the years how many will be looking at the U.P. on pasty cam ?
Sad to think so many will have to move away to find work.

By Catherine--Holland, MI on Tuesday, November 5, 2002 - 11:06 pm:

Is that really the whole class? I graduated in '85 and there were at least 80 kids--what a change in 17 years.

By Karen P, MN on Wednesday, November 6, 2002 - 08:27 am:

What a coincedence! Today's (Wed) National Geographic Photo of the day is of the Sphinx! Its a heads on picture and so you can't see the same profile that RCW of $Bay noted in the 2nd picture.

Great photo...my class of 1953 will be having our reunion next summer and this would be a great idea for a group picture. We had an all school reunion at Ontonagon in 2000, had group pictures taken, but I haven't seen a one!! This way, we could have Dan take it, and that would at least give us a chance to get copies!

By RCW $ Bay on Wednesday, November 6, 2002 - 09:42 am:

Hey Karen, that makes great wallpaper.

Hey, My son would like to become a "Jet Pilot" someday. Is there a University UP there we can send him, so we Have to come Visit?! You guys are great, from Bumpers to Breakers...

From an MTU alum and private pilot... although I did in fact get hooked on the flying bug while at MTU, that's probably not the best path to an aviation career, and you won't have nowhere near as many good flying days there as in Arizona, but it would sure work for the "Come visit UP there" angle! Check out these links:
Michigan Technological University (Houghton)
Northern Michigan University (Marquette)
Lake Superior State University (Sault Ste. Marie)

For the aviation career:
Embry Riddle Aeronautical University (Prescott AZ)
Although it sure isn't the UP, Prescott, AZ isn't bad for visits either!
