Earlier this week Brian Rendel had a couple of the mushroom shots, and as he continued his trek through the woods, came across this critter.

This completes about 237 weeks of this daily feature. We never know how a week will turn out, and this one certainly had variety. Although this isn't a UP photo, it shows another aspect of mushrooms. Did you know that moose eat mushrooms? Neither did I. Note that there is also a calf on its knees on the other side of the cow.

I wish I lived where moose came into my yard. Someday...

I have a problem with racoons if anyone can give me any help on how to get rid of him. First I had my birdfeeders that attracted him and I have put them in an area where he can't get to them. Now, he has tore my screen on my sliding door two times!! I can't even leave my screen door open because I am afraid of him getting into my house.

Great Shot!! I can remember when coons were few and far between in the UP.

Aside from the obviously great tasting Still Waters pasties, you might try Gramma "T"s Pasties, across the street from Teal Lake west of Marquette. We always stop for some, when we're on our way to Bruce Crossing. It will help keep you satisfied, until you get to the Keweenaw!

Toni's in Laurium has the best pasties.

Speaking of pasties. Try the ones at Suomi cafe in Houghton. They are really yummy. I have tried them at several places and believe they are one of the best. In fact we brought a few home this summer and I have a couple in the freezer yet. Have to get them out and dream that I am at Suomi while eating them.

Gramma T's is in Negaunee, at the intersection right across from Teal Lake. They are good pasties. Tony's in Laurium is a good pasty place, too. Haven't had any Stillwaters, yet. That's coming one of these days.

Kilpela and Friends and the Ritchie Yurkovich Polka bands are playing for the Marquette Co. Humane Society's Fall Dance tomorrow at the Elk's Lodge in Ishpeming, 1 - 6 pm. The lady Elks make a pretty good dinner, too. See you there?

Great Pic, can't believe someone could wear one around the neck! If you can't make it to the Keweenaw without a pasty and are going thru Seney, the ones at the Restaurant aren't bad either!!! I don't go that way much, but next time it might be worth the stop before I get Home....

By the way, don't know where half of the country would be without all the work you do for us Charlie. I don't know if you will ever realize how much this site means to all of us. Just a PS for you so you know we care.

If I were in the "yoop" I would be at that event.
I believe in supporting local groups. You get the best food and company at events like that.

Just a note of caution about racoons. They are
mostly nocturnal and if seen during daylight hours
they could be sick. They can carry rabies etc.
My advice to Lyn is to live trap your pesky
critter and take him to a far away woods and
release him. The racoon pictured appears to be
perfectly healthy. If a dog attacks a racoon it
could lose the battle. If near a lake or river
the coon will lure the dog into the water where the coon has the advantage. He'll attack the
underbelly and cause serious injury. This happened
recently to my friends dog.
PS. Stillwater Pasties are equal to or better than
Toni's in Laurium.

I worked on that Elk's lodge when it was built in the late 70's. Still standing-good news!

I have to second Becky's sentiments. You have such a wonderful site here. It means so much to those of us scattered around the globe, taken away from the Copper Country for one reason or another. I am currently in the Gulf of Mexico, picking up my gear and running from Hurricane Isadore, after 5 weeks at sea. Not a day goes by that I don't pull up Pasty.com at least 2 or 3 times. You help me through the long weeks! Thanks to you and everyone at pasty.com.

More great pasties can be found at Shelden's Bakery - small and large. The small ones do me in. They have vegetarian ones too. They are located in the Sharon Centre in Houghton. I work next door in one of the other businesses there and often get out of the car at 8 am to the wonderful aroma of pasties cooking. Even though I just had breakfast, I am ready for a pasty.

Too Bad the Drift Inn in Copper City doesn't make pasties anymore, but they were blue ribbon! Never had Stillwater's, but my son in the service appreciates them. We like pasties from Mohawk Superette, but have to call to see what days they make them. Louies II (formerly Fraki's) aren't bad either.

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Leave them alone!!! Animals should NEVER be moved to another location: it disorients the animal being moved and creates negative territorial situations for the animals who already live in that area.

Rabies isn't that prevalent here. If the animal is, indeed, ill, it may be distemper and moving the animal could cause a spread of the disease.

Toni's no longer ships pasties, as this is not permitted unless a bakery is USDA inspected. As Mary pointed out, Pasty Central is in full compliance with this Federal requirement, the only such USDA inspected facility in the Copper Country. If you see other websites offering to ship pasties, ask them if they are inspected, otherwise they are in violation of Federal regulation.
