You are welcome to add to the list of individuals we remember in this month's memorial:

William Lempea
Florence Lasanen
Helen Olson
Judith Olson
Ruth Hendrickson
Eulene Morgan
Robert Brown

We could write volumes about each one of these individuals, but one in particular, Bill Lempea, has a unique connection to Pasty Central. Bill was a lifelong resident of the Copper Country, working many years in the mines. Still he found time to serve as a board member for Laurium Elders Home, the forerunner of Still Waters Assisted Living, from where this website originates. At age 89 Bill passed away this month at Houghton County Medical Care Facility, where he had been a resident for the past 3 years.

By Candy, proud to have known her, in CA on Saturday, August 31, 2002 - 11:17 am:

Marcia Davis, longtime supporter of the arts in the Copper Country and wife of former Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce head Jon Davis, lost her battle with cancer this month. She was a very elegant, classy lady who had a smile and time for any and everyone. Her patience and zest for life were unbounded and I know she is missed by many, many friends as well as her husband and kids.

By Candy, CA on Saturday, August 31, 2002 - 11:27 am:

Also, Bill Lahti, patriarch of Lac La Belle, who passed away last Sunday at age 90. He was the quintessential Keweenaw gentleman and helped pave the way for generations more.

Steve Vichich of Laurium, who leaves behind two sons and daughters-in-law and four grandchildren and many friends.

By Carol Greene, Quebec on Saturday, August 31, 2002 - 02:01 pm:

Everett (Treb) Trebilcock, of East Lansing, who died at home on Monday. He was the husband of my cousin, Jane Baccus. In spite of a number of serious health problems over a number of years, he and Jane drove up to their beloved UP last summer. He, with son David, hiked out to the mouth of the Montreal, and said, as they were leaving Bete Grise, "I've lived 85 years without getting out there, so let's go!"

By AČ Royal Oak, MI on Saturday, August 31, 2002 - 02:16 pm:

Hilya Kangas who is fondly remembered by family, friends, and all who knew and loved her.

The picture was taken on the morning of August 12th, as the sun rose over Copper Harbor. It was one of the most beautiful sunrises I have ever seen.

By CHERYL UTZMAN REMALI on Thursday, September 5, 2002 - 08:17 pm:

MY MOTHER DOROTHY (UTZMAN) GRONEWALD PASSED AWAY ONE YEAR AGO ON AUGUST 9, 2001. MY MOTHER & FATHER OWNED AND OPERATED "UTZMAN'S RESTAURANT" IN CALUMET FOR 18 YEARS. AFTER DAD (ALBERT UTZMAN) DIED (JANUARY 26, 1972), SHE MARRIED JOHN GRONEWALD (JOHN'S RESTAURANT) IN DECEMBER OF 1982 & THERE SHE MADE HER FAMOUS CHILI & HER BAKERY. EVERYONE LOVED HER LEMON MERAGUE PIE! MOM RAN AN ADULT FOSTER CARE HOME FOR OVER 20 YEARS. THE BOARDERS THAT LIVED WITH US WERE TREATED LIKE FAMILY & WERE PAFRT OF OUR FAMILY. MOM WAS ALWAYS A WOMAN THAT WOULD HELP YOU IN ANY WAY THAT SHE COULD. SHE WOULD GIVE THE SHIRT OFF OF HER BACK IF NEEDED. MOM & DAD WORKED VERY HARD ALL THEIR LIVES & TAUGHT US KIDS THAT HARD WORK NEVER KILLED ANYBODY. WE LEARNED RESPECT, HONOR & ABOVE ALL LOVE FROM THEM. WE HAVE A VERY STRONG BOND BETWEEN ALL OF US KIDS. OUR LOVE IS SO STRONG, WE WOULD DO ANYTHING FOR EACH OTHER AT ANY TIME. I AM SO PROUD TO HAVE A MOTHER & FATHER THAT SHARED THEIR LOVE WITH US, THAT WE ARE ABLE TO DO THE SAME FOR OTHERS. WE WERE TAUGHT THAT IF SOMEONE IS IN NEED YOU HELP THEM. I AM HAPPY TO SAY THAT THIS IS THE WAY ALL OF OUR LIVES ARE LEAD TODAY. THANKS FOR SUCH CARING & LOVING PARENTS AS OURS. WE ALL LOVE & MISS THEM VERY MUCH.
