This morning I'm catching up on the Pasty Cam conversation over the past couple of weeks. Thanks to Sue Haralson for this peaceful scene which perfectly depicts current conditions here on the Keweenaw Peninsula. Sue also had a great discussion starter on Tuesday with her back-to-school shot.

And my special thanks to Toivo, a gentleman and a scholar for covering the Cam while Edie and I recovered from the wedding on the 17th. (of course you can read all about it back in the archives). Everybody needs a break now and then, and Toivo has agreed to man the controls sometime over the winter, too... about the time cabin fever begins to set in.

Welcome back Charlie - we missed you. But it was a well deserved rest. Toivo did a great job filing in (just has to learn how to get up a little earlier for us early birds :o) )

There used to be a Steam Train Ride. I think it actually went through Mohawk, or VERY close, at least. Does that tour still run today?

By R Somero CA on Friday, August 30, 2002 - 04:32 pm:

OK-where is it? Beautiful shot.

By Paul in Illinois on Friday, August 30, 2002 - 05:44 pm:

While Mohawk has a wide variety of old railroad roadbeds in and around the town, it never had a steam tourist line. The Steam Train Ride you probably remember, Alex, was Clint Jones' Keweenaw Central that ran on former Copper Range tracks out of Calumet towards Lake Linden in the late '60's. Nothing is running now except the Quincy tram. Hopefully, the C&H steam loco, restored at the Houghton Co. Museum, will run shortly. Aside from those two, the Copper Country has vehemently resisted any return of rail service, prefering big trucks on the highways and screaming recreational vehicles in thier back yards.

By Paul in Illinois on Friday, August 30, 2002 - 06:54 pm:

Just thought of one that came close to Mohawk. There were a couple of train tours during the C&H Centennial back in the '60's, just a couple and just one Summer. They would have gone up to the Allouez yard close to Mohawk. I don't know if they used the Keweenaw Central steam loco since those were my "had-to-work" summers during college. That may have been the train Alex remembers.

What a pretty picture! The water looks as smooth as glass. What would we who are not fortunate enough to still live there do without "our" Pasty cam? Thanks!

Welcome home Charlie! Toivo is good but He's got to learn that moring is the most wonderful time of the day. Maybe with enough practice we can make an earaly bird out of him yet. If not we love him as he is. Maybe if we changed him to much it wouldn't be good.

By Toivo from Toivola on Friday, August 30, 2002 - 11:11 pm:

Thanks for the kind words, EM. My clock is conditioned from all those years of workin the night shift. Next time maybe I can just do each new date at midnight, and really get a jump on the day.

I want to thank several Cam regulars who emailed me when I had mistakes over the past 2 weeks. There's a lot of good folks out there, who seem to like the U.P. as much as we do.

No one answered, where is it? Can't wait to get back, only been down below for 6 days and I can't stand it. Miss everything, my home, people and weather. Be back soon!!!

By Marc, offshore GoM/Tamarack on Saturday, August 31, 2002 - 02:45 am:

Yeah, where is this shot taken?? It reminds me of the small lake on cliff drive, but the ridge in the background looks too far back. Come on guys, give it up!!
3 1/2 wks to go for me...

How about Torch Lake (sort of) right behind the senior citizen apartments on Front Street in Lake Linden?

By Sue H on Saturday, August 31, 2002 - 11:37 am:

Yep! Torch Lake it is. I was out for a ride on the Lake Linden Sands,(now the EPA Meadowlands)and knew it was a Kodak moment.

By Greta, Ca on Sunday, September 1, 2002 - 12:13 pm:

Thanks for just soothing my soul! I just took a deep breath and blew out any stress, and feel so relaxed now. What a peaceful, beautiful scene!

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Sunday, September 1, 2002 - 01:48 pm:

Thanks for the answer! I do now believe it was the Calumat line. I know there are tracks that go right in back of Union Street, where my Grandma, Hilda Tiensivu, lived, unless they've removed them. There we never used in the years I was there, but yes... Calumet had the nice Steam Train ride.
