On one of our days on Isle Royale, we spent the afternoon kayaking around Caribou Island. We've done this several times before... but this time we spent hours doing it, going into every nook and cranny we could get the kayaks through. This is one of our discoveries! An arch or natural bridge, formed by the waves crashing. Kind of reminded me of the Arch Rock at Mackinac Island, I also attached a photo of the Mackinac Island Arch Rock. Two of my favorite places to be... Isle Royale and Mackinac Island.

Our bachelors on the island this week also hiked past the same spot. Jonathan framed Andy and James in this snapshot, almost overpowered by the blueness of the Lake.

Gorgeous photos as usual. Had hoped to be up in God's country next weekend to return my son to Tech to start his sophmore year. The plan was to go up a week early, get him settled and then he & some buddies were going to go back packing on Isle Royal. BUT plans changed. Seems all the "boys" have girlfriends and now the plans are to leave at the last possible moment. So my UP fix will have to wait another week.. Now tell me; Isle Royal back packing or another week with that special someone? Which would you choose? (grin)

A special thanks to Mary for drawing this natural bridge to the attention of the Natural Arch and Bridge Society. It is not in any of our catalogs, so ranks as a newly reported arch. Does anyone have a specific map location for it?

Hei, Toivo, are you there?

By Toivo from Toivola on Monday, August 12, 2002 - 08:50 am:

Hei Kenny - - I been gone for awhile, out in the woods, where there's no Internet (although rumor has it Pasty.net is even signing up the bears for wireless service). I'm not sure, but there is a little island in Todd Harbor, just north of Florence Bay, called "Arch Island". Maybe Mary or Jonathan could tell us if this is the location.

Ok, I'm going to try to do as well as our dear Toivo does at this.....but remember I'm new at putting maps on here!! :)
It's on Caribou Island and I'm just guess-timating on the "exact" location. It's the green dot. The red dot is an exact latitude/longitude for the buoy coming into Middle Island Passage. As far as I know, it's only an arch discovered by hikers and kayakers/canoeists, not one made known by the National Park Service. Hope this works!

It's been 25 years, but I seem to remember an arch on Amygdaloid(sp?) Island along the North Shore of Isle Royale. Can anyone else confirm?
