If I only had one week out of the year to visit the Keweenaw, I would choose sometime in late July or August. Such ideal conditions... near perfect temps, very few bugs, gorgeous days and nights with the purest, most vitalizing air on earth. (where have we heard that before?)

In 3 Days I too will be on the Portage! I can't wait, a full week of fishing thanks to my Dad and the Cabin he is renting and his Boat! It's been over a year since I have been up there and thats just to long!!

You forgot the bilberries and thimbleberries come into season in August. Yum!

I just checked the temps and humidity numbers up there. Man! When is the heat and humidity going to give up?? If we get to get away, we're going to wait until mid September. Hopefully, by that time the heat, humdity, and bugs will be gone. And the color will be in. Meanwhile, we'll just sit back and enjoy the cool, bugless seabreezes of the California Riviera!

But seriously, we who love the Upper Peninsula and the Copper Country, specifically don't MIND the VERY occasional heat and humidity. Beats smog and crowds too...

I miss the UP with all my heart and soul.....

Rick Karl Wi, my my, touchy aren't we? (San Diego isn't considered part of the Riviera, by the way, no wonder you missed it!) But seriously, I am one of those who love the UP. I was born and raised there, have several properties there, and vacation there every summer. Although we don't get smog on the beach, we do have the crowds,and horrendous traffic, all which make me want to go back to the UP. Realistically, every place has it's drawbacks. There is only one place that's PERFECT, and it isn't on this earth!

We all count the days until we can finally reach the UP; and the time we're visiting goes so fast....then we start counting all over again.

Beautimous! Is this Portage Lake or Torch Lake? Years ago I worked for Montgomery Wards Service Dept. in Houghton. Used to work on outboard motors and there was a boat used for testing the motors. Went up and down towards the sands and enjoying the ride. :o)

Jack,id, I'm originally from Osceola, which is considered Calumet technically, I think. Our mailing address was Calumet. I attended Washington School in Calumet, after the 4-room Osceola School closed down.

Greta- Where are you from in CA? Sounds a lot like Santa Barbara where I used to live...the Rivera and all. Now it's Ventura that I call home, but was born in the UP and visited it a lot over the years. And this site really draws you back and makes you homesick!

Rich Karl and Greta- No we really don't have bugs out here. And up this way, no smog either to speak of...often overcast or heavy clouds rolling in, but hey, you can't have everything.

Heat, bugs, or rampant bears, by Tuesday we'll be in Calumet for a few weeks! This of course means a substantial increase in revenues for the community, because we usually leave with a good portion of U.P. Tees from the Copper World Gift Shop on 5th. St. Looks like we're going to arrive just in time for the return of the heatTuesday. But I'm not complaining, because it has been in the mid 90's here in Louisville since June. So we'll see y'all in a few days!

Alice, we live further south one the coast. This part of the Riviera includes Laguna Beach, Monarch Bay, Monarch Beach, and even as far as San Clemente, where late Richard Nixons' Western Whitehouse sits atop the cliff overlooking a beautiful stretch of beach. Just came home from a camping trip north of Frisco and came through Ventura. Nice there too!! And yes, the PastyCam certainly does make one yearn for home!

Ah, Portage Lake! Spent many a summer up there. Originally from Chicago, go Black Hawks, but got married to my lovely wife Colette and now live two blocks off Lake Michigan in Holland. Love it here but love it even more in Onekama where Portage Lake resides. I met my wife up there a couple of moons ago. Anyway, going up there soon and now instead of 5 hours away we are only 2 hours away.
