Near the place I spotted the two moose last month (Paradise), I went to see the Crisp Point Lighthouse. Here's a link to the Crisp Point Light Historical Society which gives you information, and most importantly, directions. Once on the county road that leads you to this Lighthouse, make sure to pay attention to the road signs because you could get lost very easily. I don't know if the link I have included warns people that the road, after 7 miles becomes very rugged and winding. Finally when reaching the lighthouse (it seems like forever, since you can only drive 15 miles an hour) there is sand at the parking entrance and only a 4X4 can pass through this. I recommend parking before you see the sand and not trying to go through it. This isn't a place where you would want to break down, there is nothing around but the woods and black flies, cell phones not working and it would be quite a hike back to get help (18 miles!!). It was certainly worth it, even though I wanted to turn around many times because the road was so terrible!!

Beauty!

It's good fortune for all of us that the pasty cammers are willing to put in the extra effort to bring us these shots. That light looks to be well kept. Is it still active?

By ShawnR, GR MI on Tuesday, June 25, 2002 - 08:21 am:

Crisp Point is certainly a beautiful place. I kind of hate to see it on Pastycam because I've never seen anyone else out there when I was there. Never even met a car on the road, which is good, because it is a narrow road! You'll pass a very nice, quiet State Forest Campgrounds on the way in - nice place to spend a night or more.

By Carol, IN formerly MI and wish I still was. on Tuesday, June 25, 2002 - 08:24 am:

One of my favorite places...don't you all go there! It's near Culhane Lake, where I'm going in August! Beautiful! Thanks! Light is not active.

By JimR - GR Michigan on Tuesday, June 25, 2002 - 08:31 am:

Seeing this light house is well worth the trip on those winding dirt roads (I think I kept it at about 19-1/2 mph through there ~[:) ). It's amazing to think how lonely a life it must have been for the light keeper. Great pic!

By Stefani, IL on Tuesday, June 25, 2002 - 09:40 am:

4 more days...only 4 more days and I'll be back in the U.P. (aka God's Country). I can hardly wait!!!

By Candy, CA, missing the Big Lake on Tuesday, June 25, 2002 - 10:22 am:

Kiittos, Lyn, for bringing back a wonderful memory and to you, Toivo, for having the map handy again. You are definitely the UP's official cartographer! Should hit over 100 today here in the Sacramento valley, CA -- that means getting out in the garden now before the sun gets mean!

By Lori - Minnesota on Tuesday, June 25, 2002 - 10:43 am:

I too am heading up to the UP (Marquette) for a 20th reunion over the fourth of July...think any blueberries will be blue yet?

By Beverly, Mississippi on Tuesday, June 25, 2002 - 10:47 am:

Well, I think Lyn Rayray must be my hero, I mean heroine (wish you had spell check). Imagine going to such a place and being able to take such a great picture. One must feel like they have come to the end of the world at that lighthouse. And then you can turn from the Lake and see God's glorious graceland. Pardon my alliteration. Less than two weeks and I will be a 'gander again. I wish all of you a very good day.

By ShawnR, GR MI on Tuesday, June 25, 2002 - 01:20 pm:

Last time we were up there, we saw lots of blueberry plants up by Little Lake Harbor (just east of Crisp Point), but no ripe berries. (I think it was the first week of August.) Thats another nice place to visit. There is a DNR boat ramp and dock, with access to Lake Superior.

By Carol, IN, formerly MI wishing I still was on Tuesday, June 25, 2002 - 01:47 pm:

Isn't Little Lake Harbor just west of Crisp Point? By where the road turns east along the shore on Toivo's map.

By Fran,Rossville, Ga. on Tuesday, June 25, 2002 - 02:56 pm:

Come Fri I should be back in the C.C. for the 4th and the DBHS All School Reunion. It will be pure joy to get out of this heat and humidity!! The lighthouse is really beautiful! Just looking at it makes me feel cool. Thanks for sharing it with all of us.

By Lyn R. on Tuesday, June 25, 2002 - 04:08 pm:

I did forget to mention that the road does turn into only one lane. On my drive there, I came across one person, a young boy on an ATV. We almost had a head on collision due to the steep hills and winding roads. I have been on many roads such as these, but I think this one and the road to Schlatter Lake in Copper Harbor are the worst.

By ShawnR, GR MI on Tuesday, June 25, 2002 - 04:31 pm:

Oops - Carol you're right. Little Lake Harbor is WEST of Crisp Point.

By CAK on Tuesday, June 25, 2002 - 06:50 pm:

The worst road I was on was two years ago going to Smith Fisheries. One lane road, steep hills and winding roads also, no wider then seven feet, if that, and us being in a full size van. Encountered a bear crossing the roadway (path) on the way in. The scenery was absolutely gorgeous, but never again unless I am in a 4 wheel drive.

But I still talk about that trip and the beauty that was all around us.

By Tom Baker, Copper Country now on Tuesday, June 25, 2002 - 08:49 pm:

Crisp's Point (the possessive got lost along the historic route) has always been one of our favorite spots. I'm glad to see that the Society has been able to reinforce it before Superior claims another... The road out there is half of the fun (and adventure), although it's downright civilized compared to 20+ years ago! Please be aware that it is private property where you need to park, so make sure that you respect it.

My greatest impression of my first visit to Crisp's Point was the pervasive feeling of being in the company of captains and crews lost at sea. I've never had that feeling at any lighthouse we've ever visited.

By Tom Baker, Copper Country on Tuesday, June 25, 2002 - 08:50 pm:

I forgot to add - Thanks, Lyn!

By Ken from da UP on Wednesday, June 26, 2002 - 12:10 am:

What a beautimous picture. And the maps, too. What a nostalgic feeling there, 'eh? Almost haunting. Amazifying! Kiitos again, Charlie, Lyn and Toivo!

I love lighthouses with a passion. Little lighthouse statues all over my home. I wish these things were still manned and not automated. I suppose I would drop everything I had and move up there to operate a lighthouse if that could still be done. :)

The last time I was at Crisp Point in 2001, my daughter and I were able to clime to the top, the view was breath taking. I too would drop everything to man a Lighthouse. I would like to restore one. I did see a Lighthouse in the desert at Cedar City, Utah on my way to Las Vegas, NV. "Providance Lighthouse" at night its lit up every pretty.

By Matt Cameron MI on Sunday, June 30, 2002 - 09:36 pm:

Hello,
I am a member of the historical society to save Crisp Point Light House. I would like to answer some of your quetions. Unfortunately the light is no longer active and at this time we are trying to get more rock out to the light to help stop erosion. For anyone going up to the UP any time soon you can stop in at Don & Nellie Ross's in Paradise they live in the house with the sign "The Cedar Mill". They head up the Society and if they are able you might get to go up in the light. During the summer weekends there is someone normally camped at the light who will let you up in it to see the veiw. I hope you all enjoy the light and if you are up in the UP on 4 wheelers please remember not to drive on the lake shore. The DNR puts a heavy fine on that practice.

Thank you again for bringing the light to more peoples intrest.

Oh by the way if you all would like more info please visit the website in the origanail meesage.

Thanks again.

Matt Cameron

Wow, it still looks the same as it did in 1977 when a friend an I backpacked from Grand Marais to Whitfish Point on the beach and on the beginnings of the North Country Trail. It appears that the beach in front of the light is erroded away. In 1977 there was some beach in front of the light. We Hiked at night by moonlight some of that trip and we walked up to Crisp Point by moonlight. What a sight. I am glad to see it is being taken care of by a historical society. It is a great historical value.

It's a cool pic! I love the U.P. and this is a great photo of one of my fave places up there. Thanks for an awesome picture![I'm going to use it for wallpaper!]

By Joe Bond, San Diego, Ca. on Tuesday, July 16, 2002 - 04:34 pm:

I was struck by the simple beauty of the Crisp Point Lighthouse, born and raised in the U.P. I had no idea where it was. I want to thank Toivo for the maps. I have the lighthouse as my wallpaper and now I know where it is.

By Tami from flint, MI on Sunday, July 21, 2002 - 10:59 am:

I also love lighthouses, and always wondered how to get there. With the road conditions, we may not go and thanks to this pic. we don't have to.

By Matt, Indianapolis Indiana on Sunday, October 26, 2003 - 12:52 pm:

i can honestly say this lighthouse caught my attention. ive seen many lighthouses, but this one stood out. its nice to go to it and not have a souveneir shop right by it. its very secluded and on the way back, you will think you are lost. just follow the signs. at teh top it is one of the most beautiful views i have ever seen. being from a city like indianapolis, its great to get away and see something as beautiful as crisp point.

By ANDY H., TROY, OH on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 12:51 am:

JUST FOUND THIS SITE! I'M A 20 YEAR VETERAN OF 'THAT ROAD'! HAVE DONE MUCH EXPLORING OF THE THE LIGHT AND SURROUNDINGS (MOSTLY LEGAL!). ITS DEFINITELY IN MY TOP TEN FAVORITE PLACES. I JUST HOPE THE TALK OF COMMERCIALIZING IS SQUELCHED-MANY(?) OF THE LOCALS ARE OPPOSED. WHY CAN'T WE JUST LET IT STAY PRISTENE? AS A SIDE NOTE, IF YOU WANT TO ENHANCE YOUR VISIT, TRY 3 MILE BEACH. LOOK VERY CLOSELY ON YOUR LEFT AT 3.1 MILES FROM THE TURNOFF TO THE POINT. IF YOU SEE THE CREEK PULL OVER LEFT AND WALK THE TRAIL TO THE BEACH. STUNNING AND SECLUDED. GOOD SPOT FOR AGATES TOO. GOOD LUCK FINDING IT, AS THE LOCALS ARE RELUCTANT TO DIVULGE ITS LOCATION. 3.1 MILES!!! GO LEFT, WALK TO THE BIG LAKE (10 MIN.)
