Paul Bunyan's Chair
A couple of weeks ago we had this Shoebox Memory from the top of Bumbletown Hill. One of my lasting memories of this ridge is the day the Pasty Cam was almost done in, when it cushioned Jonathan's fall on the rocks. It was late on the evening of May 30, 2000... I had a little pocket recorder along... just rambling on about the fog, the birds and the mosquitos... and in the background you can hear the accident take place. If you have Real Audio, click here to listen. To view the scene I describe, scroll back up to the big picture above as the 8 minute sound clip plays.
This is one of the pictures Jonathan took before he smashed the camera. It took a bit of Yooper ingenuity to revive the broken up Pasty Cam, but about 4,000 shots later it's still serving well.

A Happy Ending to another Beautiful Day, :)

You have done it again. I am now homesick. My parents live is a small house just down from the top of Bumbletown Hill. I dream of the day when I too can live on the hill. I live in Florida now and most people just stay in Florida when they retire. Not me, I want to move back home and enjoy life in the UP. Thank you for the pictures of the most beautiful place on earth.

Howdy y'all -

Just graduated from the area and now I'm in the TX desert. I sure do miss the trees and moisture! Can't wait until I can get back.

It's too hot in Illinois! I want to be in the U.P. (Redridge really...)! I can just imagine jumping into the freezing Lake Superior!!

Really enjoyed the sound clip. Map needed!!! Where exactly is this Bumbletown hill? I want to go there the next time I am back there.

Nancy -

On the day the Paul Bunyan chair first appeared, Toivo provided this map, and said to take a left off of US-41 just before the Allouez Amoco

You bring back so many memories when you feature Bumbletown hill. When I was a senior in Calumet High, I dated a class mate who live in the highest house on top of the hill. Her name was Eleanor Bessonen, one of the finest persons I've ever known. After graduation in 1943,I went into the Air Force and she wrote to me several times a month for the entire 3+ years I was away.

In those days not many people had discovered the beauty that could be seen at Bumbletown. I discovered two beauties there.

is there anyone out there who knows where i can purchase a licence plate holder thats
has the "upper pennisula" on it

By Lyn R. on Thursday, May 30, 2002 - 10:41 pm:

I saw a nice plate holder at the Touch of Finland in Marquette on US41. Many gift shops carry these plates here in the U.P.

My front plate on my pick-um-up-truck reads "I Yoosta be a Yooper" This truck is a 1987 Chevy S/10 with a homemade wooden box-bed on it.Me & the truck look & sound like we belong up there, but we are down in Trolland. I bought my plate at the Toutist Trap. You don't want a personal plate, just the holder that has U.P. on it.Such a site to make me homesick,i'am moving on up.

Charlie, I loved the audio. You've got a great voice. Just a thought but maybe instead of typing descriptions perhaps for speacial shots that realy inspire you, you could record a clip.

Sorry I missed that map. Thanks for publishing it again. I definitely will go there the next time I go back. So much fun learning new things about the area we thought we knew so well!!

Have you ever thought about trying some oral poetry at the Motherlode or being an outdoors reporter at the Calumet TV station, Charlie?--ooops, I guess they've prematurely fled the Copper Country as I've just now recalled.
That's a nifty laid back pastoral riff you recorded there on Real Audio before Murphy's Law impolitely intruded.

A cousin of mine and her family lives near the top of Bumbletown. One of the few places in the Keweenaw you can see Lake Superior both east and west!

Marvin, you are a wise man!

Heading NORTH upon retirement is the only way to go! I may be facing forced retirement in a few weeks and, if so, i'm headed north!
