These have definitely been days of the "big change" across the U.P. After being pelted with some heavy late winter snow last month, suddenly the world is transformed in one short week. Today we have flash flood warnings across the region, and I've seen a weather report with temps forecast in the mid-60's this weekend.

Now we begin that wonderful time of the year when you can walk through the woods without snowshoes or black flies. The next 4-5 weeks should be a very pleasant time here along the shores of Lake Superior.

Today's shot by Dan Urbanski comes from the banks of the Big Iron River.

Beautimous pic, Dan. But where are they? Out near Ontonogan? Has anyone been up to the Hungarian Falls with a camera? Up the hill from Tamarack City. Be nice to see them again. Both of them. :o)

By TB, MN on Friday, April 12, 2002 - 11:24 pm:

Obviously I don't really know where Dan took this pic, but I'd guess Greenwood falls. The mouth of the Big Iron empties right in Silver City. If I'm right as to the location it is about a mile south of the mouth.

By TB, MN on Friday, April 12, 2002 - 11:28 pm:

P.S. You'll probably see them as Bonnanza Falls on a map.

By Dan U on Saturday, April 13, 2002 - 07:38 am:

TB, you are right on the money as to the
location. On the maps, they're called Bonanza
Falls, but us locals call them the
"Greenwoods",
named after the lumber company that
operated there.

Flood warnings for the Sturgeon River bring back memories of the Sturgeon flooding US-41 on the "Flats" from the river to Sturgeon River Hill (South & East of Chassell). The roadway was much lower then & would flood. We would drive through with water up to the hubcaps or so just for the thrill of it. Some thrill!!

For all my friends in the U.P., I just wanted to let you know that if you have a problem with emergency weather situations, you can visit my Website at www.ealertusa.com for emergency notifications faster than the National Weather Service!

After seeing the Flash Flood picture, I thought I would mention it.

I am getting so much out of these pictures. I think in a few years, it's going to be time to pack it up and return to Mohawk or Gay.

Keep up the great pix! I may get homesick looking at them, but that may bring me back sooner! :)

i know all about flooding, i had 4 feet of water back up in my basement. the ditch in my yard backed up in the basement, and a special thanks to the firemen that tried to help and just could not keep up with the water. we are doing ok now, but we were with out heat and hot water one night, and could not find a motel due to us having a great dane, so we just covered up and went to bed. the house was about 48 at the coldest in the house. a special thanks to my furnace man who fixed the trouble in 25 minutes after getting to the house. so i hope no one else has trouble like i had.. we had a mess..

These falls are on 64 before you get to White Pine.. This would be the best time for the falls because they are not all that great in the Summer.. Snow or rain makes these falls so much better!
