It was a long day on Friday for the gang from da U.P. here in Alaska this week for the National finals in Women's Hockey. We'll have a full report later on Saturday, after the final buzzer has sounded. Midnight here on the upper left coast is 4 a.m. the next day back in the Great Lakes state.

We've been thinking of the Keweenaw today, and all of our deer friends who gather outside the back door around supper time, in Eagle River, Michigan. Jonathan sent us a snapshot of one of the regular customers.

There is no place like home.

Site brings back a lot of memories - was stationed at Calumet back in the early 60s' and had a wonderful time there........returned a few times, but haven't been back for many years...

We were up in Eagle River on Easter Sunday - saw lots of these cute critters that day and have lots of pictures like this!

To Larry Lenwell...you should make a point of at least one more visit. We love Florida, but come spring look forward to the summer months...till October....to spend in the Keewanee. My son married a girl from Ahmeek 23 years ago, she moved here, we visited there with her dad since 1987 when we retired...in the summer. He has passed on now, but we still go there and visit the many friends we have made and enjoy the fantastic sunsets on the Lake. I must have 500 pictures of them. Love it there and the people are so down to earth and friendly. Better come back one more time!!!!.

Hey Larry Lenwell: Did you know any of the mid-to-late great 1960's Calumet AFB musicians who entertained we Eagle Harbor residents with the best of Simon & Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, the Byrds and who remembers who else at spontaneous bonfire get togethers recalled as but an aging twilight memory for us late Baby Boomers who've still got a few braincells left?

Harry Lenwell- I was stationed at Calumet AFS in the early 50s and have been back to the Copper Country many times since then to visit friends, and just take in the beautiful scenery. No trip is complete without a visit to the Copper Harbor area. How things have changed in fifty years but the view from Brockway is the same except for the lack of ore boats.
Many of the old timers are gone now but I enjoyed visiting with Frank (Louie) Ucman and listening to his player pianos. He was the foreman of the civil engineers at the station and lived in Laurium also Sgt Berghefer who still lives in Laurium I believe.

My name is Marshall Hammer, known as "Mike" (an E-6) when stationed at Calumet Air Force Station November 1, 1972 until June or so of 1976. I was one of the two medics who served the troops. I rode my bicycles everywhere when not on call. I also had a Honda CB-500 motorcycle which had to be packed away during winter. Charlie Hilton and John Thorpe were fellow medics.

I played hockey at Calumet ice ring with some ten or so of the radar site troops. Bill Burton at the one of the towers was a pal of mine. I watched the Calumet semi-pro hockey club lose games there. Major Clutter was the commander. I forget the First Sergeant's name.

I loved to snow shoe during heavy winter snows. 1972-73 we had some 300 inches of snow. I recall the long cold winters and short, black fly infested summers.

He passed away Monday 6-21-2004, and will be missed . I was stationed with him 1974/1975 at Calumet AFS.

I WAS STATIONED AT CALUMET A.F.S. IN 1969. COULD NOT BELIEVE THAT WITH ALL THE FINLANDERS THERE WAS NO SKI JUMP!! JUST A BEAUTIFUL PLACE AND PLAN TO VISIT THIS FALL. SURE BRINGS BACK A LOT OF GREAT MEMORIES.

At least the U P does have the National ski hall of fame .

Hello to Mike Hammer & the rest of you guys that were stationed at C.A.F.S....I was stationed at Calumet Air Force Station from about June 1974 - December 1975 when I got discharged. Mike, I remember the hockey team and a guy I worked with played on it. His name was "Charlie Waters" if I remember right, maybe you knew him. I worked in the FPS-27 tower as a Radar Technician. I also had a motorcycle around the area all the time when it was warm enough. I climbed the hill by the Radar tower with it, when no one was around.HA!
Yes, the winters are cold & long, but it sure is a beautiful area of the country!
I'd like to hear from anyone who wants to talk about old times there.

Hello! My name is Bill Rowley. I was stationed at the CAFS in 65/66. I was` a radar tech in the FPS26/90 section. I met my wife there in 1965. She was was from Columbus Oh and was visiting her sister who lived in the 'housing area' with her husband. I truly love the UP(I was born in Jackson Mi) and the Copper Country most.My wife and I along with her sister and husband visited in 1990. I hope to visit again this summer. We regularly order pastys from Calumet.I've got a collection of reading material about the Copper Country. My biggest regret is that I didn't fully appreciate the history of the area when I was stationed there.

Does anyone have any pictures taken at the old radar base? I have been looking for a shot of the dome.

1986-1988
