Kelly Wenberg debuts today as a Pasty Camist, and we welcome a fresh look at current conditions in the Keweenaw.

The weatherman has been on a losing streak as far as forecasts are concerned. The past 5 or 6 days they called for snow or rain or mix. But we've enjoyed quite a bit of sunshine out on the peninsula. Not long before the sap starts running, too.

By the way, today the Michigan Tech Women's Hockey Team flies to Anchorage, Alaska, to a week of National final playoffs. Good luck Huskies!

Gorgeous shot of the old Tobacco River Kelly! Way to go!!

By MKW $Bay on Tuesday, April 2, 2002 - 06:52 am:

April 1 marks the opening of early steelhead fishing. Looks a little difficult from the river bank. I guess we'll have to play tourist and fish from the bridge if we can take the balmy temperatures. Great shot Kelly & welcome to Pasty camists

Charlie,
'Current' conditions? Just look at that current! :o) Just kidding, it is a pretty picture. Many, many years since I've seen the
Tobacco River. The Hungarian Creek/Falls up from Tamarack City must be impressive 'bout now. Anyone have a pic of them?

By eric, fl on Tuesday, April 2, 2002 - 06:21 pm:

One Word:

WOW!

By KarenP on Wednesday, April 3, 2002 - 09:27 am:

The colour is caused by the tannin and lignins leached from bogs. Many of the UP rivers are like this. The water is also very soft and so sometimes froth. Then it looks like rootbeer.

By Dan Ruonavaara North Pole Alaska on Wednesday, April 3, 2002 - 09:59 am:

Excellent picture! Reminds me of all the times I swam here as a kid. We lived here on the right bank of the river up until 1979. Make's ya kind of home sick, but still to cold to wade in the river now.

By Mike, White Lake, MI. on Wednesday, April 3, 2002 - 11:52 am:

Does dat river flow like dat in the summertime?

By Marc, offshore GoM on Wednesday, April 3, 2002 - 04:02 pm:

Great Picture. I don't know if you have heard this or where it came from but there is comfort in these words that someone once told me:
"No Winter Lasts forever...
No Spring skips its turn."
Somedays I have to just keep chanting this to myself. Hope it helps youse guys there.

And there is some old Finnish saying:
The new snow is the death of the old.

Bring it on!

By Alex Tiensivu on Thursday, April 4, 2002 - 11:00 am:

This Tobacco Rive shot makes me drool to be back in Mohawk and Gay for a visit. Also, I thank the person who wrote me about it being here, after knowing how much I miss the U.P.

Does anyone else on this comment list know any of my relatives? (Tiensivu... Norman, Marvin, Hilda, Alex). How about the Keckonen's? Are they still in Gay? I believed they called my Uncle's brother, Cabby or Gabby.

It's so weird hearing from people who actually know my family.

Nice! Great picture. We're in Detroit now and was checking the pasty cam and was suprised to find another Wenberg putting pictures on the cam.
WAY TO GO!

By Mike K, Gulf of Mexico on Thursday, April 4, 2002 - 10:14 pm:

Answer for Sue...Go to Gay, then turn north towards Lac LaBelle. About a mile north of Gay you'll cross the Tobacco River. Great steelhead fishing there at the mouth, just make sure you get there early to get the good holes. 4 AM is usually too late! Anyways, hope they don't run till I get home beginning of May.

By Krysta Bykkonen on Sunday, June 15, 2003 - 08:49 pm:
