Remember how little snow we had a couple of months ago for the Winter Carnival? They had to truck it in to build the snow houses. The past couple of weeks have certainly made up for anything we missed in January.

Yesterday Cam-watcher Chris K. posted on a summertime view of the Lift Bridge (see June 16), asking if there were 2 travel decks. Here's documented proof, comparing R. Wetton's photo above with one taken by Daryl Laitila last summer:

I know a road runs under the bridge on both sides of it . And i know the lower tier of the lift bridge has a road on it. why dont they connect the two bypass roads with the lift bridge.

The UP and especially Keweenaw is a wonderful and unique place. Mohawk was a great place to grow up in the 40’s and 50’s.
When we retired in 1997, after 35 years in the Rochester NY area, there was a great urge and we considered moving back to Keweenaw. However, after much consideration, we came to the following conclusions;
The $0 NY income tax(for retirees) was too good to pass up, The medical facilities (Strong and Roc General) are among the best in the country. NYS is one of the most beautiful and diverse scenic areas (Southern Tier, hills of Central NY, Adirondacks, and Niagara Frontier). You can get to any one of them within several hours on our great roadways (NYS Thruway, I-81, Southern Tier Expressway or the country roads.
When we get a desire for the UP (Keweenaw) we take a ride to Sodus Point, Lyons, Clyde, Rose, etc, its just the same as Copper Harbor, Houghton, Calumet, Mohawk. If we want the deep woods scene we head for the NY North Country.
When we get the desire for snow we take a short 2 hr trip to the east end of Lake Ontario, or Lake Erie, do our snow sledding and head back, all in one day.
Shopping (Eastview, Marketplace, Greece TM, and Wegmans) is hard to beat.
Western NY has some of the finest restaurants in the world.
In conclusion we found the best of both worlds.

Actually, it's not a big deal at all. So, you could say it is just another day with a lot dang snow on the ground.

In fact, I am sure we blew by the 200" mark sometime this morning. . .as I was shoveling my car out.

The robins just arrived 440 miles south of Houghton. Better clear some spots for them to land, they're on the way.

Lookin good! But I prefer the warmer months. I hope to get my fix of pasties and make it up there this spring.

I love your Pasty.com site. (The BEST site I know of!)The pictures are really great,& the cam-notes are good and a great way to find out more about your great history of the area. I'm retired now and just love to get back in the area each year in summer and winter for 2-3 weeks to look around, hike, fish, talk to the locals, and of course take a ton of pictures. You people live in a "Gem" of Michigan! This is my first note to you all up there but not my last.

Here comes my pasties 2 cents worth; Pasty Central and Tony's are good, but there's a little grocery store in Mohawk, about 20 miles north of Houghton, the Superette, which gets the pasty blue ribbon. They don't ship pasties and the only way to get on is to make the drive. For any pasty loving U.P. visitor, the trip to Mohawk will be worthwile. #1 Pasty..

Attention HHS, 1991: My daughter Julie, Houghton High School, Class of 1991, gave birth this morning at 4:06 am, to a beautiful son: Luke 8 pounds, 5 ounces. Thought her friends and ours would like to know!
