What with the State of the Union address tonight, and some unexpected delays, Pasty Cam was almost late with the Jan 29th photo! But we were assisted by Kathleen Baker, who was out cruisin' the Keweenaw with her husband and brought back this classic pic. Kathleen says, "There is certainly never a lack of beautiful subject matter here in the UP! Love the Pasty Cam shots!"

And we thank you, Kathleen, for this one.

Looks a little different than the last time I was up there:

I keep joking down here (Dearborn) saying that we are having an awfully cold summer these last few months. Look's like it's not much different up there.

Loved your shot -- absolutely beautiful.

So much for our awfully cold summer -- winter has arrived!

Beautiful shot! Which lighthouse is this? I have this as my wallpaper and I'm not able to answer the questions I am getting about the name of the lighthouse.

Kate, Its the Mendota Lighthouse and its located on the shore in Bete Gris , halfway between Eagle Harbor ad Copper Harbor.

This pic makes me homesick...been swimming right near where the lighhose is located and I remember back in the 80's there were rustic campsites located right near by as well~ and across the road from the lake there were regualar camps my Grandparents had a camp out at Bete Gris the pic brings back many good memories !
Cant wait til May to be back for a visit to Calumet!!!!!

My great grandmother lived in a house right across the canal from Mendota Lighthouse back in the 1800's. We have a newspaper article telling about how she used to light a lantern and put it in the lake side window before she would go to bed at night. The light was used by the ships at night to guide them before Mendota Lighthouse was built in the 1880's. The house she lived in no longer exists, but my father was born in 1913 in the house that sits on the right hand side at the end of the road by the canal. My grandfather was a commercial fisherman, and in 1922, the sand had accumulated at the mouth of the canal so that he could no longer get his boat in the canal to dock it. At that point, the family moved to the west end of Copper Harbor, and have resided there ever since.

Naomi, are you sure that it is between Eagle and Copper Harbor's? I think not, it is at the end of the road at Bete Gris. Use to be a great place to swim, but had to watch the undertoe. My family still has a cottage at the "Bay", boy oh boy what memories.

John, the owner says he had so much trouble with noisy phone lines he bagged the live pix awhile back. He's hoping to install satellite 'net access this spring and the live pix will be up again!
