To some, the snow and cold here in the north seems a harsh environment, something to be avoided. My personal opinion? The rugged elements only sharpen one's appreciation of warmth and comfort.

Tonight at the Calumet Theatre, Charlie Eshbach (of the Keweenaw Traveler) gave a slide presentation at a meeting about open access to the land. Some of the vegetation on this peninsula, he pointed out, thrives because of the nature of the seasons, the climate. Perhaps some of the folks attending that meeting will share their feedback over in our Keweenaw Issues section.

As I type these words, it's after dark now. The wind is howling, a dust storm of snow is swirling outside. Like W.C. Fields used to say, night a night fit for maaaan nor beast. It is good to be inside by the fire.

And good to be in the Keweenaw.

Could'nt agree with you more about the rugged elements only sharpening one's appreciation of warmth and comfort. In the UP mother nature shows her bueaty in so many ways and yes, some are harsh. Those howling winds and the swirling snows make those ever so intransing "snow snakes" that glid across the road ways. Wish I were there.

I can remember many a winter day after cutting for hours in the woods when nothing on this earth felt sweeter than the warmth of a woodstove and the sound of its crackling fire.
Course now I never came back home to a place quite like the one above.
Now that's a vacation cabin!

It's hard to believe there's that much snow on the ground this early in the winter. I guess I've been gone too long to have an accurate memory.

Thanks again Charlie, it's another beautiful shot. Thanks to all at Stillwater for getting me through another long trip at sea with the daily reminders of how beautiful it is back home in Copper Country. See you all in 2 days!!!!!

OK - this may a total tacky tangent to a beautiful picture, but my curiosity is getting the better of me - how much does a home like this go for in the Copper Country? Prices are getting ridiculous in the Tahoe area ($900K for 3100 sq. ft.) and I'm curious about the difference.

Is this the place built a couple years ago near Hebard park, going into the harbor? It's nice to visit this site for my daily return to home. I can't wait until my time down under expires and I can return home.

This A frame looks familiar...does it sit atop a hill along the Canal Road north and west of Hancock? There should be a wood fired sauna just to the right if it's the place I'm thinking of.

That's a beautiful cabin in the woods. Wish I could be there right now with a blanket and easy chair by the fire. Is there a lot of building going on up in that part of the state? Many new homes going up around this part of the state! Hubby wants to retire "up north" in 5 years. Can't wait!

THE HOUSE IN THE PICTURE IS BY HEBARD PARK NEAR COPPER HARBOR. I'VE BEEN COMING TO THE COPPER COUNTRY SINCE 1952 AND BUILT THIS HOUSE IN '98. STILL HAVE AN OLD HOUSE IN FULTON THAT IS VERY OLD AND VERY "SUMMER". ANY BUYERS? THE FULTON THAT IS! COPPER HARBOR IS NOT FOR SALE! WE LOVE IT AND HOPEFULLY WILL BE UP THERE FULL TIME IN A COUPLE OF YEARS.
