Brought the old trusty muzzle loader and some pasties and Trenary toast... it don't get no better than this. And after we trek thru the woods in search of some venison stew this weekend - just for fun we can make some more wood.

Then we can try out the new sauna (say it like: SOW-nuh) and roll around in the snow. Before we head home, let's cut up that birch into six inch pieces, bore a 1" hole in the center, stick in a candle, and sell em' on the Internet.

Now where is that URL for pasty-dot-com??

And while you're at it, what's the number for 9-1-1 ??

By kkoski-MI on Saturday, December 2, 2000 - 08:16 am:

LOL guys!!

My dad tells stories of his old relatives- sounds just like great uncles Jalmer & Emil...

By M Slis, offshore GoM on Saturday, December 2, 2000 - 08:32 am:

GREAT!!
I'm out in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico and I still hit the Sauna every other night! No Trenary toast or anything that even remotely resembles a pasty, but this site keeps me going until I get back home. Thanks guys:)

Had pasties last week and took a sauna last night. Even tho I'm in northern Illinois, I enjoy 'living the dream'. I'm new to this web site and love to visit it every day. It brings back great memories of my mom (Helen Juntunen) and my aunt and uncle (Lepisto). Sorry, I'm not into hunting deer!

By Dan in Fenton, MI on Saturday, December 2, 2000 - 12:40 pm:

Dat dare place in da pitcher looks like a place dat we've camped at along the Traverse River out by Big Traverse. It was on the Gay-Lake Linden road. We called it da River Valley Mansion, even doe da heat was hard to regulate.

You guys are crackin' me up! Although I live in Boston now, I originally hail from South Range and Marquette. I check this site daily to keep in touch with home. I'll be out in Houghton over Christmas and maybe I'll pass you on the street.

I brought pasties to an office pot-luck this summer and they were a big hit. I still have to teach all these Massfolk how to pronounce "sauna" though. It's tough going, let me tell you.

Oh, I love it! Some of the names sound like people I heard my mom and dad talk about when I was a kid...Juntunen, Lepisto (Was he the surveyor?) and Jalmer and Emil. Wasn't there a Juntunen who worked for the Detroit Free Press? My uncle Armas Perskari also worked there. My grandpa was Emil Maki and my parents were Alma and Louis Perskari.

And Craig, I have to second trying to teach people how to say "sauna." They always want to correct our pronunciation! I also check this site every day. Makes me homesick, even though I didn't live in the UP beyond the age of 3. Just spent wonderful summers there.

Bee,Sarasota,FL (The Guess Who Won State?) Even thou we have only summered there (just above Calumet), for the past fifteen years, the place is sorely missed when we head for here and warmer digs.I Was born and raised on Long Island, by the Atlantic and believe me the Superior takes no back seat to any waters. Had always longed to retire to Maine, but the UP has it all! Lord, grant me another year to meet with all the good friends made in Calumet, Lake Linden, Hubble and all over the great UP....the 51st State!

By CheddarJohn on Tuesday, December 5, 2000 - 03:37 pm:

Dat tractor--is it by any chance a Farmall "H"? Looks like the "H's" my dad has. Use dat tractor to pull da sauna back round front, eh? Cook da pasties on da stove while saunaing--would dat ruin da pasty taste or enhance it? Heard about da Norwegian Yooper? He made lutefisk pasties! Wrapped 'em in lefse--I kid you not!

By CheddarJohn on Thursday, December 7, 2000 - 02:09 pm:

Darn. St. Nick didn't deliver on those pasties. I guess St. Nick isn't a Yooper!

By JULIE-OHIO on Wednesday, March 21, 2001 - 11:32 pm:

By Frank C, northeastern Illinois on Tuesday, April 15, 2003 - 04:39 pm:

Nick, glad you stumbled across this wonderful website! There are lots of Finns in the U.P.; you might be related to them, so check in every day and read the messages. After a bit you'll get a good sense of their life and culture.

As for pastys, you can buy some of the very best there are
right here! And your purchase helps support the Still Waters Assisted Living Community in Calumet, Michigan, so everyone wins. The same fine folks also run this discussion forum, provide 'net access throughout the nation via Pasty.net, and more.

I can tell you after several dozen of their pastys, they are indeed "wowsers"!

One of the nicest people I ever met was T.J.Lepisto, who owned 3 or 4 Quality grocery stores in the Copper Country. I worked in the Lake Linden store while in High School. He was so nice!! I don't know what the T stands for but would guess it was Toivo.
