On another morning walk I found "pancake ice" in the Big Iron River here in downtown Silver City. It is a somewhat rare formation, where ice is kept in, broken by wave action. Eventually the pieces become quite rounded by the constant grinding, like the one in the second photo (below).

Boy, I got a lot of feedback from the "volcano" picture (see Monday's photo this week). I sure appreciate all the kind words from Pasty Cam visitors.

Like hasbrowns with that?

Doing a little math on this Thanksgiving Day, we arrived at a bit of trivia: one thousand days ago Alex Voelker was born. Who is Alex Voelker? The son of Abe and Chris Voelker of Calumet, born February 28, 1998... Alex is the grandson of the Bausano's, who operate CopperWorld . The day Alex was born, Tony Bausano asked us if we could put Alex's picture on pasty.com, so the relatives around the country could see the joyous arrival.

Alex
Up to that time we had only featured occasional shots: the Snow Thermometer, the Winter Carnival at Michigan Tech, and, of course, our residents at Still Waters helping make pasties. With Alex's picture the last day of February '98 we had an idea: How about a daily photo feature? We could call it the "Pasty Cam", have shots of people, landmarks, buildngs, scenery and sunsets, with a little write-up every day.

The next day, March 1, Jonathan happened to spot a little guy riding a miniature snowmobile in the field across from the new Burger King in Calumet. At one point his machine bogged down, and a couple of adults helped him extract it. Jonathan aimed and clicked our new Sony Mavica... and the Pasty Cam was on its way.

Over the years we have been joined by other amateur and professional photographers in bringing you this "Glimpse of life in the U.P." Our thanks to each one who has had a part, and a special thanks to Dan Urbanski for today's shots. If you count from the day we actually committed to the Pasty Cam as a daily feature, this is day number 999. What will tomorrow bring? You'll have to come back to find out... and so will I.

Thank you all for your wonderful pictures! My great grandparents came from Finland and landed in Hancock, I enjoy seeing the places that might have been part of their everyday lives.

Glad (and proud) that I could have a very small part in the 1,000 days!

Peter had a great shot of the Calumet Breakwater which was selected by our viewers for the 2000 Pasty Cam Calendar:

Wow! Alex Voelker is an exact image of his father! My mother, Marie Hermanson, babysat for Abe Voelker in his early years.
