The Pasty Cam last stood at this spot little more than a month ago. No snow at that time, and you may recall it was an unusual first here at Pasty Central... a wedding proposal. In case you didn't hear the outcome, Katriina did say yes to Jonathan, who took both pictures that day, as well as the one above.

Down the home stretch to the New Year...

By Louis from New York City on Saturday, December 29, 2001 - 09:35 pm:

Greetings from New York City!

We've been working for the past year or so on a film about the Woody Guthrie song "1913 Massacre" and the true story behind the song (the story of the Italian Hall disaster in Calumet, 1913).

You can read all about our project at
http://www.1913massacre.com

We spent some time in the UP in summer of 2001 meeting people and interviewing (and seeing the opera), and we plan to visit again soon.

Many people in the UP have already shared their stories and family photos with us. We are always looking for new stories and pictures -- and we are especially interested in gathering motion picture footage of Calumet life from, say, 1910-1935...

The historian Arthur Thurner, who is advising us on the project, informs us that Pathe shot a newsreel during the strike and funeral of 1913. So far we haven't had any luck finding it. Any clues? We appreciate any help or leads or hints you can give!

Amateur motion picture footage of life in Calumet in the early half of the 20th century is also of great interest to us.

All our contact info is on our website. Thanks. And Happy New Year to all our friends in the UP!

My husband and I were admiring the winter scene from here in Florida. We were wondering- does anyone do any ice fishing in the Keweenaw? If so, is it done on Lake Superior or on inland lakes?

Didnt you have one this Spring/Fall from this exact place? Wow what a change the snow seems to have just started playing "catch up" from all that you missed in November/December!
Someone must have done the "heikki lunta snowdance" Ha ha!
Well have fun with all your new snow it looks so pretty...But as I know well is a headache to remove from driveways, paths ect..!!!!
Cant wait to get home for my next visit *Early Springtime hopefully*

To G.R. in Florida: LOTS of ice fishing, including contests/derbys happen in the U.P. Most of the fishing is in the bay areas (I'm most familiar with Keweenaw and Chassell Bays). Not every year can the fisherpeople go out on the big lake; at least not very far. Winter of 95/96 my husband and friends were able to go out 14 miles on the lake from Portage Entry Canal, Chassell.

PS Take a dive in the ocean for me! I lived in SE FL from the age of 14 - 25; miss it once in awhile.
