It has been foggy and rainy much of the day all across the U.P. I glanced back through our Pasty Cam inbox for a rainy day picture, and happened across this shot from the past, sent to us by Holly Zemsta. Yes, it is Marquette, as evidenced by the name on the trestle down the street. But what is out of place in this picture?

By ywb.yooperwannabe/Richmond MI on Wednesday, December 5, 2001 - 08:18 pm:

The trestle is now gone.

Lack of snow.

By Evelyn, Texas on Wednesday, December 5, 2001 - 09:05 pm:

PS We had 8 inches of snow here in Texas a week ago and we don't have any snow plows. It was warmer up there than it was here.

By kef on Wednesday, December 5, 2001 - 09:25 pm:

I think everyone covered it, except that its in black and white. Near Detroit it was in the 60's - when is the real winter coming???

By Sam on Wednesday, December 5, 2001 - 10:21 pm:

The trestle isn't there, the snow is missing, and I'm Missing ! :( I gotta quit looking here.

By FunnyMan on Wednesday, December 5, 2001 - 10:23 pm:

Looks like the 4th of July .

By Bill P on Wednesday, December 5, 2001 - 10:47 pm:

It is obvious that the only thing wrong with this picture is that Jonathan didn't take it. He has had exclusive rights to the Marquette area for a long time. Some intruder took this picture while Jonathan was thinking about other things like marriage.

By ywb.yooperwannabe/Richmond MI on Thursday, December 6, 2001 - 06:30 am:

I agree with Sam. Although I can't stop checking in on the site! I need to get back up North.

By julie, IN on Thursday, December 6, 2001 - 07:51 am:

The truck on the left is parked in the wrong direction! Sheldon is a one way street.

By BillP, MN on Thursday, December 6, 2001 - 08:11 am:

I thought Sheldon was one way up the hill. By the way, when my mother was pregnant for my oldest brother (about 1950), she fell on the sidewalk in January and slid all the way down the hill past where the truck was parked. Just a memory.

By Yooper in Indiana on Thursday, December 6, 2001 - 10:12 am:

t'was a late spring?

By NMU alum on Thursday, December 6, 2001 - 10:35 am:

This is Front Street in Marquette rather than Sheldon in Houghton.

By Jessica, St Ignace on Thursday, December 6, 2001 - 10:42 am:

Julie...Sheldon Ave is in Houghton not Marquette......NMU alum is right Marquette has Front street (I grew up in Houghton and was wondering what the heck julie was talking about) thanks MSU alum for refreshing my memory of the main streets name in Marquette

By Kate, St. Paul on Thursday, December 6, 2001 - 10:52 am:

There are no people on the streets!

By yoopertransplant,MI on Thursday, December 6, 2001 - 12:00 pm:

The cars are parked in the No Parking Zone.

By FL on Thursday, December 6, 2001 - 01:23 pm:

Now people, Nothings wrong, the flags are up with a little snow on the ground it must be the 4th of July in the UP

By Mike on Thursday, December 6, 2001 - 03:42 pm:

I doubt its the 4th.

1. There's no leaves on the trees
2. On the light pole with the no parking sign, there looks to be a Christmas bow on it.

By Ken on Thursday, December 6, 2001 - 03:45 pm:

There are six things wrong with this picture. If you don't want to know what they are, or want more time to try to figure them out don't read below.

OK, here they are, the six things wrong with the picture are:

1. The time on the clock is wrong.
2. The clouds are in the wrong place.
3. That hill is no longer there.
4. Marquette is spelled wrong.
5. The truck is the wrong color.
6. These buildings are all from Seattle.

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Thursday, December 6, 2001 - 05:07 pm:

Whoa ! I better put a stop to this before it gets out of hand.

HERE IS THE ANSWER:

No, Ken, it's not Seattle. This is in fact Marquette, before the event below took place. Kevin Musser of Copperrange.org pointed this out from the Online Mining Journal:

Men at work
So there you have it - the trestle is gone but not forgotten. The very first response above (YWB) was correct.

Thank you Charlie! I do so enjoy being right. A woman always is!! :)

By Holly Z., Chicago on Thursday, December 6, 2001 - 08:11 pm:

I thought I'd send the picture as my contribution of a little bit of Marquette history - when coming back to NMU after the holidays, the trestle was always such a nice herald of being "home" again. Funny how you can consider the UP home even if you aren't a true Yooper (I was a troll originally).

Bill, Jonathan must've had his eye on his wife for a long time - I took the picture as a student ten years ago! From what I hear it looks all slushy like that now though - Mother Nature must be waiting for some some of signal.

Thanks, Charlie!

By Bill P on Thursday, December 6, 2001 - 10:27 pm:

Jonathan has been looking for a long time :) Had to find the right one. He did!!!!!

By Kate, CA on Friday, December 7, 2001 - 09:09 am:

I was going to say the Bunny Bread sign was
missing

By FRN on Friday, December 7, 2001 - 10:24 am:

>> "Sheldon Ave is in Houghton not Marquette"
C'mon youse Yoopers... there is no "Sheldon Ave." in Marquette, nor in Houghton either... it's SHELDEN Ave in Houghton! :-)

By Mark Pasich formerly of Calumet & Marquette on Monday, December 10, 2001 - 10:11 pm:

Also the First of America Building on the left is no longer First of America. It is not even National City. They left Marquette too. So this picture is at least 5 years old or so.
