Today's forecast calls for temps in the 40's, so we may lose the rest of the snow from last week. Yesterday Daryl Laitila and her husband Bill took a little tour of the Peninsula, with this stop at the Fort.

You may recall seeing this spot a few summers ago on the Pasty Cam. It's pretty quiet here in the off season.

We always enjoyed being in the Upper area. We will have to go up there again next summer

One of my favorite sites to visit. Especially enjoy viewing "Old Glory" flying from the flagstaff near the shore of Lake Fanny Hoe (sp).

Great shots - brings back memories of the 1st time I took my son camping (he was 9). We spent the 1st night at the Campgrounds near the Fort. It rained buckets and we toured the Fort in the morning in our slickers. He still talks about our waterlogged adventure, especially the way the rain clouds over Lake Superior looked from the top of Brockway Mt.

Nice surprise to see a snow covered Fort pic. I have trudged many times through here in winter, sometimes across a frozen Lake Fanny Hooe (a little later in the season, of course). It's a bit less crowded that time of year! I cannot seem to find the book, or even recall the title, for that matter, but there is a great story in one of Mac Frimodig's books I remember about wintering it at the Fort years ago. Any help, please, before I'm forced to search the bottomless pit that is my garage?

Love the pics! I have pics of my brother and I sitting on that cannon with the Fort behind us many years ago. Then a few years ago I got the same shot of my daughter and son in the same pose.

I agree with "snowless". It's great to see the fort snowed in. My favorite memories of the fort are from visiting in the winter or in early spring for some fishing. Nothing like having the fort to yourself :)

As I grew up, Ft. Wilkins to me was "were daddy worked." My father worked as a carpenter at Fort Wilkins until he turned 70 and the State of Michigan said he had to retire. He helped to build the bakery and the Seargents'(or is it Captain's) quarters just outside the stockade fence, along with the little bridge over the creek and many other things there. His picture is still in one of the displays in the building at the northwest corner of the fort. He started working there when "Mac" Frimodig was Park Manager. Now that "daddy" has passed away, Fort Wilkins is even more special to me not only for its historical significance, but for the reminders it gives of my special father and his many talents.

Was the book you referred to called "The Copper Harbor Stare"? I have several of those books and that one was a great view of winter life in the U.P.

I have pics of my sons sitting on that cannon, taken on at least a dozen different visits. :)
