These pictures were taken on Sunday November 4, 2001 in Keweenaw County... we found this pine tree while bird hunting. At the base that's Jim Studebaker on the left and me on the right, trying to indicate the size of this monster. The other photo was taken at a distance of about five hundred yards or so and shows most of the tree. If this is a native pine, it's not anywhere near the Estivant Pines. We wondered how Keweenaw must have looked when these trees dotted the landscape. Wonder how old it is? Doesn't the far shot look like a tree out of Jurassic Park? Anyhow we had a good time taking these pics...

Nice shot Scotty Bo. Good luck deer hunting!

May your best shots be with a camera.

Long live the deer, grouse, bear, et al.

Wonderful tree. I've seen bigger UP there but not many. I hope you limit out on all your hunting excursions. Especially deer, just think of all the injuries and deaths to both people and deer if we didn't control the deer populations.

Rare find - It is a grand tree indeed - to think that this behemoth was probably a mere sapling when our first president was still walking this planet. Time is a wonderful thing to "see".

Thanks guys for the inspiring photo of consistency in these wacky times of change...

Thanks, Scott and Jim, for the photo of this great tree. We have put it on www.keweenawnow.com as our first official link to the Pasty Cam, which we will continue as a regular feature, thanks to Charlie Hopper. Happy hunting from

I took a stroll through the Estivant Pines in August. (It seemed like the entire circular trail we took was uphill all the way.) We didn't see any pines of this size though.

When I was a little boy (1930) the area between the Ahmeek mine location and Mohawk was covered with pine stumps; many were about that size. Apparently the area was clear-cut in the 1890s. I often tried to imagine what that area looked like before the trees were cut down. During the depression most of the stumps were harvested to provide fuel for the winters.

Scotty pitched for me many years ago when he was a student at CLK schools. He was a good one and helped his team win 3 championships in a row. Scott of course went on to play for Wolverine with success. Enjoy the winters Scotty, I am with less than 10 inches a winter in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Been here almost 6 years and love it. 70 degrees today after 78 yesterday. God Bless you all in the U.P. and KEEP SMILIN"

Oh! This is "a treat to see tree" it is a fine symbol of the UP. Thanks for posting it and Thank you Michele Anderson for opening our eyes to this website and for the work. We thank our lucky stars to have the Copper Country Peace Alliance. where we get to visit with people similar to this beautiful tree.
