Took a wonderful vacation on Isle Royale, and when I checked back with the Pasty Cam, noticed that quite a few people had asked for a picture of ripe thimbleberries. I didn't have time this trip to check the bushes at the Calumet Waterworks, but I did pick this sun-ripened treat near the Rock Island lighthouse on Fri., Aug. 10.

The Pasty Cam is blessed to have a growing number of good photographers who fulfill the growing number of requests we receive each week. Over the weekend we received both of these fine shots at almost the same time... the first handful from Nancy Nelson, followed closely by an unpicked beauty from our own staff photographer Daryl Laitila.

Compare these with the raspberry shot last week from Dan Urbanski... a darker red, with bigger seeds.

Yea, Pasty Cam! Once again you have done it! Folks in Texas never know what I am talking about when I tell them about thimbleberries and the wonderful jam it makes. Now I can show them! Our daughter arrives home on Wednesday after 2 weeks in the Copper Country and I know she will be bringing me a fresh supply of jam. Yummm! My thanks to Nancy and Daryl for fullfilling my request.

Nanc, are you sure that isn't the picture that I took 20 years ago when you and I and your girls were on the island???
(in case no one has put 2 and 2 together yet, Nancy and I are sisters. I was going to warn you last week that she was on the island and would be coming back with a year's worth of pictures!!!

Thank you for the great thimbleberry picture!! These look so good I can taste them from here.

So nice to see pics of thimbleberries... makes the mouth water uncontrollably, even more so when I think of the jam, sitting in the cupboard, carefully made last summer. Now where did I put that toast?

By Tricia on Tuesday, August 14, 2001 - 01:58 pm:

Hope there will be some left come sept. 4th!
If not fresh, some jam!

By Nancy E. Nelson on Tuesday, August 14, 2001 - 10:51 pm:

What was wonderful after many years of being away from picking thimbleberries--the ones we picked on Rock Island were warm and sweet, and didn't really need to be made into jam for those of us who remember them so fondly! If anyone wonders about the jam, I recently found in the deep receses of my basement a jar that I made approximately 18 years ago (shows what my cellar is like!), and other than being "sugared" was still very tasty, and enjoyed on an English muffin.

Thanks for the pictures of the thimbleberries! My family and I were up there Aug. 3/4 and we wanted to to see what they looked like on the bush and pick some fresh. Didn't know where to look... now I can show them the pics.
