For the past 3-1/2 years one of the highlights of my day has been the posting of the Pasty Cam. Sometimes it's early morning, occasionally near midnight. Today's dual perspective has again capture the feel of the world outside my window as I write these words. Not that I can see Hebbard Park from here (several miles north) but the feel of the Superior shore as the sun approaches the Lake's surface. The blinding rays of the sun are filtering through the big birch in the back yard... and then, beyond, the endless, shining inland ocean . Sometimes I feel like the richest guy in the world, sitting here on the edge of 10% of the planet's fresh water.

With every year I get up to "God's Country" for a small vacation, I make it a point to spend an evening watching the sunset from this location.I never grow tired of it. But then, there are so many great spots along this drive to catch that sun sinking into Superior!

By Nancy Nelson, WI on Wednesday, July 11, 2001 - 09:48 pm:

The cloud rainbow in the first picture is an added treat to a beautiful picture.

By Judy, MI on Wednesday, July 11, 2001 - 10:54 pm:

Charlie, Thank you for this picture. This was a favorite picnic place for our family from as far back as I can remember. Hope to take my grandchildren there some day. I love this spot!!

By Tim in Oscoda, MI on Wednesday, July 11, 2001 - 11:30 pm:

I was just thinking the same thing Judy! Two summers ago my family and I sat in that shelter and ate our just bought pasties while we watched three freighters make their way thru the water! Ah...the memories!

Thanks for all the great shots, Charlie!

By Curt J , WI on Thursday, July 12, 2001 - 12:18 am:

My wife and I have spent many a moment in that gazebo. From being high school sweethearts from the Copper Country to our visits (12 years later)
from Wisconsin nowadays. Does anybody have a picture of the bear in the tree (where the tree has been painted to look like a bear)? I believe it is on Hwy 41, just before the Eagle Harbor turn. Thanks!

By DMac $Bay on Thursday, July 12, 2001 - 05:16 am:

I love these shots. Now, up on the "trail" near the gazebo, in one of the bricks is a shoeprint of a really, really big shoe. How/why is that there? Who's shoe is that? Does anyone know?

By Matt, Metro Detroit on Thursday, July 12, 2001 - 06:20 am:

Although it's been a few years, this has always been a favorite spot to stop and just "take in the Lake", no matter the time of day. Thanks Charlie! (Any chance one of these can be a WOW?)

By yooper wanna be, Living north of Detroit on Thursday, July 12, 2001 - 07:45 am:

Wow, two great shots in the same day! I can hear the waves gently rolling into the rocks. There is no place better than the Upper! July 28 I finally leave for my 2 weeks. Thanks Charlie.

By Karen Buck, Virginia on Thursday, July 12, 2001 - 09:50 am:

I'm not exactly sure where Hebbard Park is along M-26. Can you tell me where it is? Do you know the origin of the name of the park? I'd like to go there as I will be in the area July 18-25. Thanks.

By Candy Goulette, CA on Thursday, July 12, 2001 - 11:58 am:

I, too, have great memories of Hebard Park, going back to 1959 when my family first stopped there to see "Paul Bunyan's footprint" during our first whole summer in Calumet. Over the years since, it's always been a special place to me, for cold windy picnics to sunny, lazy strolls -- doesn't matter what the weather is there, the lake is always calling. Thanks for the great shot, Jon -- it's like a big hug from an old friend!

By Sharon on Thursday, July 12, 2001 - 12:40 pm:

Charlie, your words echoed my feelings exactly. Even though my view is of Copper Harbor, the big lake is just a quarter mile away, and I often feel nobody could be so fortunate as I am, to be able to realize my dream and actually live there.

It's doubly poignant because I'm writing this from Detroit, during a fast trip to the other place. Be back tomorrow. Can't wait.

By Stefani, IL on Thursday, July 12, 2001 - 02:20 pm:

Aaaaahh!!! I was there just a few days ago! I love the tiny rainbow almost dead-center in the top picture.

By Dawn, Oregon on Thursday, July 12, 2001 - 03:12 pm:

Hey, Jon - is the "tiny rainbow" an actual rainbow or is it a sundog? Must be a pot of gold on that point. Then again, the whole Keewenaw is a pot of gold!

By Carole, Sterling Hts. on Thursday, July 12, 2001 - 06:46 pm:

Absolutely beautiful! Definitely another WOW. Will be up first two weeks in September to enjoy all this gorgeous scenery and the greatest Lake!!

By karen on Thursday, July 12, 2001 - 08:06 pm:

wow i love the pics there so pretty i wish i had something like that out here lol

By G.Lee, Connecticut on Thursday, July 12, 2001 - 08:52 pm:

Thanks Charlie for another beaut! I remember being in that spot while in the service during early '70s. Think I had a girlfriend with me....

By Liz Benson, Idaho on Thursday, July 12, 2001 - 09:57 pm:

By Gosh, That is Paul Bunyon's foot print! According to my dad, Paul stepped with one foot there and the other on Isle Royale. And, if the weather, lake, and clouds are "just so," and, you're looking in the right spot, you can see Paul and Babe coming from Canada....especially if the sunset is at a certain angle.....how many evenings did our young eyes and minds see that mystical apparition? Have we spread that tale to the younger generation now that Dad isn't here to do it himself? You bet we do...every chance we get!

By Rose - Illinois on Friday, July 13, 2001 - 05:25 am:

This park has always been our favorite place to go to eat a breakfast of sweet rolls purchased at the Country Lane Bakery (not sure I've got the name correct?) in Copper Harbor.
Also to Curt J. in Wisc. I have photographed that "bear on the tree" along 41 several times! Will have to hunt up the latest photo.

By Jill, Ft. Worth Texas on Friday, July 13, 2001 - 09:55 am:

I love the pics of the UP. I visit pasty.com daily just to see the view. Living in Texas I miss being close to the water or being able to walk on a nice quiet beach. The UP will always be home to me.

By Dave Bartlett, St. Petersburg, Florida on Saturday, July 14, 2001 - 07:19 am:

Ditto one of the earlier e-mailers: Just where, exactly, is Hebbard Park along M-26? Would someone please e-mail a reply to this page? Thanks.

One more thing. I cannot begin to tell you the number of times I've had to convince non-yoopers or non-Michiganders that the Great Lakes are, in fact, inland SEAS, not little ponds where you can see the far shore---particularly Lake Superior, the greatest of the great lakes. New England yankees are particularly, shall we say, condescendng. When I tell them that for every quaint, picturesque seaside Maine village we have one just like it in Michigan, or that the rocky Keweenaw coast could easily be mistaken for downeast Maine, they look at me sympathetically, "Oh, reaaally.....?" their skeptical gaze seems to suggest. We have ocean-going SHIPS plying our waters, majestic lighthouses standing sentinel on our shores, and November storms on Superior rivalling anything old Mother Atlantic can toss their way.

I am so proud to be a defender and expounder on what I clearly view as the GREATEST of the fifty states. Sometimes I feel like a missionary down here in deep, deep Troll Land, needless to say. Happily, though, I'll be returning to the Keweenaw this autumn for a five- or six-month stay (I desperately need a fix of the Four Seasons), and hope to see many of you wonderful people during my stay. Frankly, some of the remarks by e-mail correspondents to this site are the most cogent, thoughtful, and heartfelt comments I've read anywhere, electronically or in print.

All of you nice out-of-staters deserve to be up in the Copper Country. But when you can't, isn't the Pasty.com website a Godsend?

By George, Orange Park, FL on Tuesday, July 17, 2001 - 07:38 pm:

I enjoy looking at your pictures and use many of them (top one in this instance) for background on my PCs at home and work. Someday I'll visit for real; probably in the summer.

By Ken from da UP on Wednesday, July 18, 2001 - 01:40 pm:

Really nice shots, Charlie. Brings back memories again and again. Got any shots of Ezra Park? Used to stop there lots, too. The Devil's Washtub? Last time I was there, there were two scuba divers in it. Must've been looking for coins.

I have been born and raised for 23 years in "GODS COUNTRY." I was actually thinking of leaving this beautiful place. But, after reading what ya'll wrote it opened up my eyes and something in my heart. I now know just how lucky I am to live in a wonderland just as wonderful as the U.P.
Thank-You everyone for letting a pure-bred yooper open her eyes and heart to her home.

I can still taste those Pork & Beans with Vollwerths weiners we heated on the outdoor grill at Hebbard Park some 40 years ago!

My maiden name is Hebbard and my family is from the UP. I just got back from visiting there and loved it. I wish I had known about Hebbard Park as I would have made a special visit there. I went all the way to the end of 41 in Copper Harbor and made special stops in Calumet to see the theater where my grandmother performed. I also went to Eagle Harbor to see the monument of the Knights of Pythias which she unvailed at a ceremony in 1931.
