This is a week to celebrate history in the U.P. Over on the east end of the peninsula the Soo Locks Festival, and here in the Copper Country the "Heritage Celebration" in Calumet.

In 1966, Ken Austin from Wisconsin happened to be passing through the Soo Canal and captured this scene at the construction of the Poe Lock. Wonder if any Cam Watchers ever passed this way after it was completed?

I sailed the lakes in '59 and '60 and then in '62.
Been through the locks and under the Big Mac more than I've been over. Never took the locks cruises.
Been on those observation platforms a few times
though.

the soo locks is one of the most peaceful places to sit and watch the ore boats go thru..we go there every summer with the kids.they love it.its so relaxing and fun to see the big boats go thru plus a thrill.

You can watch the ships pass through the lock "almost live" via the The U.S. Army Cold Regions Research & Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) Library page at:

http://www.crrel.usace.army.mil/ierd/webcams/soo/

Nothing cold about this region today. 97 in Copper Country and plenty of humidity to make it feel more like the south end of 41 rather than the north end.

I go into the Soo Locks web site everyday (sometimes twice a day) and feel like I am right there. Have even enjoyed it in the winter watching the river freeze and the snow storms. But I cannot wait until March 25th with the opening of the lock and all the boats lined up waiting to go through.
