To give you a better perspective of yesterday's old photo, here is an animation which overlays the old church with the present-day business.

Then and Now
The home just to the right of the church/gas station is the residence of Bill and Daryl Laitila - and also the home of the Bridge Cam, a live update of the Lift Bridge. If you browse back through the Pasty Cam archives you will find several discussions about this live webcam.

Thanks to all who posted their guesses yesterday. I am curious to see the Pelkie Co-op sometime :o)

I have Dave's to thank for bailing me out of a bonehead mistake, after locking my keys in my car at Lac La Belle. They are AAA's #1 service referral station in the Keweenaw & apparently all the way to Marquette.
Thanks Dave's!

Oh! Nothing better than Dave's Marathon, they were my life saver when I hit a curb and popped a tire on a cold February day this past winter. They were so efficient at towing, tire replacement and getting me back on the road. My vehicle was towed & in and out in less than a 1/2 hour even while others were being serviced, and I paid a very fair price for it all too!

I had really wanted to have a good excuse for missing my physics class that day, but I couldn't do it with that sort of top notch service. Darn :-( hehe

Gotta agree with Michele. Dave's DOES have top shelf service!! I drop my car off and pick it up when it's done. The service has always been outstanding. And like Michele said, "a very fair price too". Hat's off to Dave and crew, and hat's off to the Pasty cam! I look forward to this everyday!

Nice photo! I would have never guessed! I wonder how many other modern businesses have their roots into history like this.

Bruno's
This photo was taken around the early 1930's. My grandfather, Caesar Lucchesi, owned that station along with 30+ gas stations in Houghton, Keweenaw, Ontonagon and Baraga counties. It was during the 30's that they sold Johnson gasoline. They also were a Plymouth dealership as noted in the photo. The station was later owned and operated by Bruno Lucchesi, then Leo Lucchesi (he leased it and finally sold it to Dave Dow, the current owner).
