We noticed tonight in Houghton the the movie "Escanaba in the Moonlight" is playing downtown. Nothing against Escanaba, but it's hard to beat the Keweenaw/Superior shore for a magical mid-night experience as we approach full moon. Something at Great Sand Bay keeps luring Jonathan back for another look, accompanied by the trusty Pasty Cam.

Over the years we have featured several moonlit scenes, and another of my favorites was in the oposite season - another time (July) another place (Torch Lake) another world compared to these wind-swept shores of March.

One of my favorite spots in the Keweenaw! I'll have to swing by there again. Nice shot Jonathan!

Burned and ripped from the 1973 Keweenaw underground classic Double LP Summit Street Sessions:

GREAT SAND BAY

Music's in the air I hear it singing
Weaving tales of old folklore
Waves are rollin' in they bring a treasure
Of dirftwood upon the shore
Great Sand Bay

Think I'll get some wood for the supper fire
Relax this day away
Long as I live I'll never tire
Of the quiet way
Great Sand Bay

Point your head into the breeze
Make a pillow of the sand
Sleep so gentle in your dreams
You grasp the hand of the land
Great Sand Bay

Resting underneath a starlit sky
Listening to the lake kiss the shore
Embracing with the wind as it flows around me
Happy to be here once more
Great Sand Bay

That moonlight shot just tugs at the heartstrings!
I wanna go home!

Charlie, are we to believe that Jonathan is lured to the Great Sand Bay on a beautiful full moon night acompanied by only his camera? Charlie most of us have visited Sand Bay on a full moon night. Are you sure it is only the love of a picture that draws him?

It is a beautiful picture, Jonathan.

This isn't helping my homesickness.

By TJG, CA. on Friday, March 9, 2001 - 10:21 am:

Charlie, I heard that "Escanaba In Da Moonlight" will only be playing at theaters in the midwest. I doubt that it will still be playing in Houghton when I get to the UP in July for vacation; so can you ask the theater to shipped the movie to California when they finish with it?
Also, when they send the movie, have them throw in some pasties instead of popcorn!

Looks like this would be the perfect spot to watch the Space Shuttle Discovery and International Space Station go by in the night sky tomorrow and next week. Check the URL below for sightings in your favorite city. Select "Quick and Easy Sightings by City" at the top left of the screen.

"Escanaba In Da Moonlight" played LIVE in Grand Rapids last summer, and I MISSED IT!!!!! Does anyone know where Jeff Daniels' film is being
shown - or even WHEN? Jeff Daniels' wife is from Escanaba, and the play was about deer hunters in the UP (a'la 2nd Week of Deer Camp, I understand). I check out the Independent Film channel on TV, but....this way could take forever. Sounds like the making of a cult PLAY or FILM...but if it's as insulting as "Dumb & Dumber" - I dunno.....maybe not a good idea??

The last I heard it was just in houghton and will be headed to small theaters in the midwest, If it does well enough it will be released nation wide,

The one citic stated it was too local and the jokes were too much for insiders they might not get it else where,

well I think they mis judge the number of misplaced yoopers

Love it! My Great-grandfather worked with the Copper Falls Mining Company. He built a cabin on Great Sand Bay and my cousin owns the "point" that sticks out in this picture. Oh, the great times we had every summer coming up here to visit.
