Charlie and Gang,
Thank you for all you do to keep us transplant yoopers around the world in touch with our roots. It means so much to me each day to check out the Eagle Harbor Cam and the daily pasty cam shots. Though it is a labor of love on your part it is a lot of work and we regulars sure appreciate it. Happy New Year! Sally
(give a special hug from me to Ione Westlake, would ya?!)

By Kathy Day re: Pasties to Ohio on Thursday, December 30, 1999 - 08:52 am:

Thank you SO MUCH for making my mother-in-law's Christmas so special! Her pasties arrived this week. We wrapped up a note as one of her gifts that read, "Be ready for an U.P.surprise that will be delivered on the 29th! The familiar aroma will remind you of your favorite retreat." We wrapped it in a box that had a map of the UP on it. The anticipation added to the excitement. She grew up spending summers at a family cottage in Cedarville and one of the things she loved was buying pasties. What joy you gave her when she opened her package today...who would have ever guessed that pasties could elicit tears of joy!!! They arrived so quickly and so well packed too. Once again, thank you for adding a special memory for someone who has a special fondness for the UP.

Sincerely,
Kathy Day

HI-HI! That gorgeous home on Dec 28 '99 looks good enough to eat! A dark chocolate house, with white chocolate roof, and dark green spunsugar trees with fluffy white powdered sugar all over everything else! I think I'd better order pasties soon.....must be getting hungry? Love from, Karoliina

I love your site and visit a couple times a week!
I'm curious about the lighthouse in the December 7th picture. Is it for sale? Do you know where I might inquire about it? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!!!

We had several requests for contact information about the lighthouse. We're emailing you their number. Maybe we should start a "Pasty Central Realty" page ? :o)

By Stan Kotajarvi on Tuesday, December 28, 1999 - 08:23 am:

I just received my 3 Pasty Central calendars and they look great. The selections of pictures is excellent. (I noticed that about half of them are pictures that I chose, so I feel good about that.) This should become an annual event. How about next year you offer two sizes, one like this year's and another a bit bigger for a wall calendar. I'll bet you get orders for both.

Keep up the good work with the pasty cam. I check it and the pasty-mail about every day. Happy New Year to you and all the people at Still Waters.

Thanks for the suggestion, Stan. We are working on higher resolution pictures in the new year, and hopefully can make a bigger calendar for 2001.

By Chris Brown, Illinois on Monday, December 27, 1999 - 09:13 am:

I was wondering, before I place an order... Are there eggs ro milk products in the pasties? My girlfriend and I are interested in getting a few but she can't eat these.

Thanks,
Chris Brown

As a finishing touch, the pasties have an "egg-wash" (milk-eggs) which could probably be skipped... we'll check with the cooks and email you. Thanks for your interest.

I would like to wish everyone at Pasty Central a Merry Christmas and a Happy new year. This is definitely a top 10 website that I visit daily.I appreciated the pictures of Ontonagon as I spent my formidable years there(ages 18-23).My mother still lives there. She is the Museum manager for the County museum so stop in and say "Hi".All I can say for the new year is Kiitos.

By L. Hart, Santa Catalina Island, California on Saturday, December 25, 1999 - 01:01 pm:

Hello and Happy Holidays to all at PastyNet, and especially to those of you who work hard to give us our daily "letter from home" via beautiful pictures (even tho' you didn't find the North Pole in Eagle Harbor for the pastycam.) Thank you, thank you, thank you! The winterberry/snow photo made me even more mournful to miss snow this time of year. It's annoyingly hot here on the island in the Pacific (Santa Catalina) but I still try to wear sweaters at Christmas time. A Happy 2000 to all of you across the world who are in this happy little internet club.

A little extra Christmas Cheer for Copper Country from the desert Southwest:

Palm trees wave, are you listenin'?
In the pool, water's glistenin'.....
A beautiful sight, we're happy tonight
Livin' in a Phoenix Wonderland!

Gone away is the blizzard,
Here to stay is the lizard,
A warm sunny day, we like it that way,
Livin' in a Phoenix Wonderland!

In the desert we will have a picnic,
Cactus, sand and rattlesnakes and sun...
Christmas dinner is an old tradition,
It's pinto beans and tacos by the ton.

Later on we'll perspire,
Temperatures rise even higher...
A warm sunny day, we like it that way,
Livin' in a Phoenix Wonderland!
Keep smilin'

John E Saari, Jackson, TN on Friday, December 24, 1999 - 02:40 pm:

We received the pasties yesterday on the 23rd and we will eat a couple of them tonight for supper.

Never thought we could eat pasty so far from the U.P.

I did run into a pasty shop in California once at a mall - in La Mesa near San Diego.

Thanks to all at Pasty Central.

By D.Rende, Texas on Thursday, December 23, 1999 - 10:41 am:

Greetings and Merry Christmas Pasty Central!!!!

My husband and I just got our Pasties yesterday afternoon and enjoyed those FABULOUS PASTIES for dinner, along with another Michigan favorite, Vernor's!!!!! My husband is a "troll" and had never eaten a pasty before, he loved them! I grew up in Hancock but hadn't eaten one in years. It brought back good memories of da UP! Now we live in San Antonio, TX and they eat Tamales here at Christmas time. Those are made with a spiced beef (very spicy hot) and it's wrapped in a cornmeal pastry and then steamed in a corn husk. Quite tasty. I call them the Texas Pasty!!! ANYWAY, the check is on it's way from San Antonio. Y'all have a Merry CHRISTmas and a Happy New Year! I love your site and thanks for getting me back in touch with da UP!!!!

By G. Lee, Connecticut on Thursday, December 23, 1999 - 10:40 am:

This is a great site, just discovered it and sure brings back memories of my stay in the Copper Country while in the Coast Guard. Got up there late Dec 1969 and never saw a snowier winter anywhere . . . is the CG station still in operation (over next to F.J. McLain state park on Rt 41)? Additionally, do you know offhand if that winter of 1969-70 was in fact one of the snowiest on record in those parts?
PASTIES VIA INTERNET, I can't believe it, but my order will follow soon! Thanks for a great site, hope you can answer my questions above.

The Coast Guard station is now located in Dollar Bay in a beautiful new building. We'll try to get a picture of it on the Pasty Cam soon. The record snowfall for the last one hundred years was 78-79 with 390.4" in Keweenaw County. The winter of 69-70 only had 165.1" of snow. Normally our snowfall is around 200 inches.

Thank you so much guys. My daughter in Indiana just e-mailed that her pasties arrived (just as you promised). She was thrilled, and I am tickled pink with your service. Maybe, after the holidays, I'll order some for me. After all, we had them one night a week at the Student Union at good ole MCM&T (not to give away my age or anything!).

I grew up in Houghton, moved to Flint in 1950, joined the Army and now have resided in "Rocket City USA" which is Huntsville, Alabama for the last 22 years.
I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and hopefully will be up there during the wonderful summer.

I heard that this month the moon is supposed to be brighter then usual. Would it be possible (weather permitting) to see a picture of it over the lake or over anything for that matter?

We tried to catch a clearing in the clouds... It was very bright, but didn't last long enough to capture. On the first day of winter, of course, the earth is the closest to the sun. The next full moon on this day will be in 133 years. Maybe then we'll have a better shot :o)

By Jason Cooper, Michigan on Tuesday, December 21, 1999 - 11:54 pm:

Hi, I really enjoy your website, it is really neat with the Pasty Cam! ...I would like to make a request of the pasty cam, because I spend my summers in Big Traverse, but I have never seen it in the winter, and I was wondering if you could get a picture of the breakwater there!! Ive never been up in the winter, but I would like to to! We dont get too much snow down here in the Lower Peninsula.

Thank you for your time, and keep up the good work on the site!!!

Jason

If we can dig the Pasty Cam out of this snow storm, we'll take a ride over to Big Traverse sometime soon

My Dad got the pasties in Florida, much to his surprise!! We all agreed that they were the best we've had in years. My Dad's criteria for a good pasty is the crust and your crust is wonderful!! As my Dad approaches the age of 92, there really isn't anything to buy him, as he claims to have enough of everything. A good pasty was a real treat.

Thank you

I am an old yooper who happens to live in Toledo, Ohio. My brother and I have made pasties all of our adult lives. I ordered some of your pasties for him at his home in Albany, Illinois, last month and he told me that they are better than we make. Congratulations!! That's quite a compliment. I have yet to try them myself but plan to do so soon. I'm sending them to my friends in Duluth on my brother's recommendation.

Sincerely,
Alice Falvey

Thanks for your kind words... You just made a whole bunch of old yoopers very happy here in Calumet :o)

By Mike Ellis, Michigan on Thursday, December 16, 1999 - 12:14 pm:

Wah! What a great website for all of us "transplanted" Yoopers. I happen to be a "Lowper" living down here in da mitten. I have been gone from the "Last Frontier" for 16 years now. We manage to make the trek back maybe twice each year, but it's nice to see parts of the Copper Counrty so quickly. Keep up the good work! I love that bridge cam, eventhough it looks so dark and dreary. When was the last time that pasty cam went down to Chassell?
Say yah, you betcha, do da U.P. eh!

By Dan Carlson, Michigan on Wednesday, December 15, 1999 - 12:23 pm:

Hi,
Does the bridge camera lens get dirty? It always appears gloomy in Houghton, and I know that's not the case. Maybe someone could wipe the stamp-sand and salt off of it.
Great web site! I can almost feel the cold on my face, and picture gritty, gray stamp-sand in the snow, while my swampers clunk along on the gritty, sandy pavement. Do you have any snowblower cut photos that show layers of sand/snow/sand/snow? How about the ritual snowball war?

By L. Hart, Catalina Island on Monday, December 13, 1999 - 09:33 pm:

On recent trip to the Copper Country I found the North Pole in Eagle Harbor! With a red ribbon, or just "as is" it would make a good seasonal picture for the Pasty Cam. Hint: It's right at a major corner by the harbor. I'll be looking for it.

Just when we thought we'd seen everything in the Keweenaw...

By Anonymous on Monday, December 13, 1999 - 07:09 pm:

Eh, 'Youse Guys!

How are you coming along on the Pasty Cam 2000

Maybe you could let us know how to order one and
also how to find out who won?

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Love the site! I graduated from Calumet High School in 1981 - oh Lord, has it been almost 20 years already?? I'm transplanted to Nevada and love to look at the Pasty Cam. While I'm not a big snow fan anymore, I can look at the pictures and not shovel! A question: what are the two bright lights to the right on the bridge cam?

Keep up the great work!!

Those are probably the spotlights which illuminate the bridge after dark. The bridge is an awe inspiring sight at night.

Your website has become a real addiction for me. I have to check it everyday and keep finding more great things about my former home than I ever knew before. Thanks.
For those wising to see pictures of "The Natural Wall", go to the Pasty Hall of Fame and click on "Copper Range Railroad", then go to "History", and then to "Keweenaw Geology". From there they will see "The Natural Wall" with a good geological description. Not much is given on the history of it, however.

Such a cool site you've built and a cool business too. As the very big corporations get into e-commerce with their very big feet, it's a great pleasure to have come upon pasty.com. May the web always stay a people place.

A question, please. We visited the UP in September and saw the Kearsarge stone boat and wondered about it. Do I conclude from your emails about it, that it was a WPA work project? Beyond providing practice in stone work, what was its purpose?

Thank You

Your conclusion about the WPA is correct. Actually, it was built to keep away stone submarines J

By Linda Gillett on Wednesday, December 8, 1999 - 04:12 pm:

It was sure nice to see the old stone boat I played on it many times as a child Do you get out to Copper Harbor much? Could you do a Pasty Cam of the Church of Christ in Hancock? I grew up in that church. It's an OLD OLD building. If you have any more history on that building, I would love to hear it. Hevva Paiva! (Good Day in Finnish ... I think)

Greetings,

I just love your Pasty Cam and all the memories that come flooding back to me. I grew up in Hancock with five sisters, three brothers, and my Mom. Having graduated from Suomi College and Northern Michigan University, I have a lot of friends and relatives in the Copper Country.

My wife and I love pasties and get them every time we come north to visit my relatives; my mom taught my wife how to make the "real" pasties with rutabaga!

I would like to see some photos of Suomi College and west Hancock if you have any. The Kaleva is a favorite of course and we never miss it on our trips up north. Keep up the great work... we keep in touch from Waukesha, Wisconsin, near Milwaukee!

God bless you and all the Yoopers!

By Holli Miller, Georgia on Sunday, December 5, 1999 - 12:08 am:

Hi my parents are from Ironwood, Michigan and we make pasties maybe once a year...cause as you know it's alot of work. Our whole family loves pasties. We live in Savannah, GA. , but my parents recently went home to visit..and returned with pasties. An exact amount so everyone get just one...so I thought i could get them some for Christmas. What ingredients do you put in them? We like meat, potatoe, and chopped onions.

Our regular pasties are made with meat, potatoes, carrots, rutabagas, onions, and seasonings. They can be requested "minus" something (example: without onion). Also the crust is made with vegetable shortening (not lard) and there's just a touch of vinegar which enhances the flavor. Ooops! That's probably a secret I wasn't supposed to tell :o)

By Anonymous on Saturday, December 4, 1999 - 11:55 pm:

When will I find out if I won a y2k Calendar??

It is taking a while to tally all the votes... and we'll be listing the results soon regarding the favorites. Each person can then compare the final list and email us if you believe that at least 10 out of 12 of your choices made the finished calendar. We then can look up your nominations and verify that a free calendar is yours. This may take some time, because we received hundreds of entries :o)

By Gail Reich, downstate on Wednesday, December 1, 1999 - 01:45 am:

I would like to thank you and your staff for the timely response to my request for some shots of the Central Mine area. The house you chose for last Friday's Pasty Cam photo was, in fact, the home owned by my relatives for many many years. Many stories were passed along to me by my mother and my grandmother about the house, as well as a couple colorful stories shared by my cousin Charles (Stetter)! I have some very special memories of having a home-made PASTY dinner with a large contingent of Rosemergy relatives there in the dining room of that very house back in the 1960's. Thanks again for your thoughtfulness, and I look forward to future installments from the Pasty-Cam.

Sincerely,
Gail Reich

We are delighted to get Pasty Cam requests for sights in the Keweenaw, and we try to see them all. So many great scenes, so little time :o)
