Mary Drew at Pasty Central on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 05:41 am:

With the cooler morning and evening temperatures, our thoughts begin to turn more to fall and colorful leaves. We tend to forget that there are still a few berries out there just ripening before our eyes! Thanks to Brita Haapala (the first shot) and Tina Hyrkas (the second and third shots), we get an up-close view of the end of the growing season here in the Keweenaw. From what I hear, the blackberries are still ripening and it looks like this dragon fly (correct me if I'm wrong), is just sitting there waiting for a taste of the fruit. I bet if you do a bit of searching, you'll still find some blueberries just begging to be picked. Which leaves the last photo...I know the thimbleberries are past their prime, but I just couldn't resist throwing in that last burst of bright red summer fruit! :->

By Rose on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 05:44 am:

Good Morning. Wouldn't those berries be nice on cereal right now?

Either that or with a bit of cream over the top of them.....YUM! Mornin' all!

By Ned, Kingsford. on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 05:53 am:

It is a Dragonfly. My grandma called them "darning needles". I recall being very afraid of them because they looked so scary. Now I realize they are beneficial (they eat mosquitos) and beautiful.

By John Jacob Jingle H. on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 05:56 am:

Nice photos...all 3 have something in them besides berries. Look close............

Only 38° in my part of Houghton County right now. There is a nip of fall in the air for sure. Time to check my big green tomatoes. Just crossing my fingers they don't get nipped by frost this year.

The second photo, look for eyes and nose.
The third, you can see the whole body.

Lovely sunny pictures. They'd be a treasure to see on one of the cold, gray winter days; as would one of the beautiful snow pictures be great on one of these hot humid days. We're predicted to get into the 80's again this coming week in troll land.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 06:48 am:

Mornin', going to be sunny all day out here.

Hey, I found it.
The PastyCam logo!

By kosk in Toronto on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 06:50 am:

There are few things more beautiful than wild
berries. My dad picked 145 quarts in August
and September. I just had blueberry
pancakes made with wild UP berries for
breakfast this morning. The pictures made
me homesick. Surprise. But then, so did
yesterday's freighter.

By UP dreamer stuck in NJ on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 06:57 am:

One of my favorite memories is picking wild huckleberries in the woods near my grandfather's house in Mio. It's actually one of the reasons we're moving to Michigan soon. There's nothing wild left here in Jersey!

By Misty on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 07:01 am:

To eagle eye/IND,
I an glad to hear you found the PastyCam logo!! Congrats!! Way to go!!!!

By Anita from the U.P. on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 07:05 am:

Good morning everybody! My mother used to tell us that a dragonfly was a sewing needle and it would sew our mouths shut if we swore. I believed her for a long time.....until I tested it one day :)

By NKR Mishawaka IN on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 07:09 am:

Good morning from Mishawaka IN. Chilly here this morning. Yummmm! Blackberries. Have a good day everyone.

By Erin, Novi MI on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 07:13 am:

Those berries look really good.

I check this site every morning, but it's my first time posting. I graduated from Tech in May 2004 and am now doing engineering work down here in Novi. I miss it up there and it still feels like I should be going back any day now (even though classes started a few weeks ago already.) I can't wait until I get to go up there in February.

By Tom, Wisconsin on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 07:18 am:

The sewing needle myth must have been used by quite a few CC mothers. I was told it would sew my mouth shut if I swore, too. Nice photos. Might have to make a quick trip north to check out berries that are left.

By anita, mi on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 07:29 am:

morning all. What, did all CC mothers get together and conspire to tell us that myth? I was told the same thing. When we went outside to play, we would all cover our mouths whenever a dragonfly came around. lol lol

By Ron, Georgia on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 07:49 am:

They look soooo good. I've been thinking about wild UP berries, all summer. Now I really feel deprived. Well, maybe next year....

By Yooper in Westland on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 07:52 am:

To Erin, Novi~

You wouldn't happen to have Winter Carnival on the brain already would you?!? ;)

By Sarah, stuck in Ohio on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 08:01 am:

So Chuck, how about it? Did you find another ATV? How's the weather in Little Betsy today? When are you two coming back south?

By Roudy Mi on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 08:05 am:

Snow in the mountains of northern California as you read this.

By rob in dc on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 08:22 am:

It's not just CC moms. Mine is from Ironwood, and she told me the same story about darning needles.

By Lorelei on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 08:25 am:

I know this is changing the subject but when I was a child, we used to love to catch fire flies. I never see them anymore. What's up with that? Anyone have an answer as to why they are not as abundant as 30 years ago?

By Tom, Colorado on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 08:34 am:

Berries alone, on cereal or ice cream, my mouth is watering this morning. How I wish I were in UP for some great berries

By Joan W, Ohio on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 08:35 am:

Good morning...from wet Ohio...getting rain from Ivan...last week we got the rain from Frances! But, that is nothing compared to those poor people down south! We need to keep them all in our prayers as the hurricane season is still another 10 weeks long!! And there are two more waiting in the wings...all of us who have relatives and friends will be thinking of them and how they have survived the horrible destruction that those hurricanes can do.
Love the pictures of the berries...our season is over here, so appreciate them. We do not have thimbleberries in Ohio and can't even buy the jam or jelly! And it is sooooooo good!

Son of a Yooper, what brings you to Stuttgart?
My husband left there this morning. As soon as he gets in, we're leaving for Mackinaw for a weekend bike tour (as in bicycle, not motorcycle).
I hope he's getting some sleep on that plane.

At least I can see the UP from there. ;-)

By John Jacob .... on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 09:04 am:

Photographers, correct me if I am wrong, but I see a hampsters face in photo # 2 and a what looks to be a gerbil in photo # 3. Is it trick photography or do I need sleep??

By pk, WB, Wis on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 09:08 am:

JJJS---you must be delusional; I don't see anything in the
pics except berries, leaves touched by the fall, and the one
dragonfly. Some more hints, please.

By Bob P - West Bend, WI on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 09:09 am:

Good morning all. I've spent several days picking blueberries up on the south shore of the Keewenaw. It's just another great feature the U.P. has to offer. Have a great weekend all. I think next weekend we'll be bringing the family up to scout some waterfalls, visit the big spring and enjoy the colors.

By Mary Ann, WY on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 09:12 am:

The berries look oh so good! My aunt who lives in the UP just told me there are still blueberries to be found. Sure wish I were there to get some. The blueberries that I have to buy in the store have no flavor and always remember the good ones I use to pick as a child. Oh to be back in the UP.

By camwatcher on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 09:21 am:

A hamster and gerbil? No.
Berries.

By John Jacob on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 09:27 am:

In the last photo, look above the ripe thimbleberry. It is a white gerbil with brown spots.

By MS, CA on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 10:52 am:

Fireflies? I did see them one night in August at Bete Grise. I was looking for northern lights--and instead I saw these quick blinking flashes. I thought something was wrong with my eyes! I have no idea why fireflies are less abundant these days. However, the berries were abundant this summer. Yeah!

By Dave of Mohawk on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 10:54 am:

Jessie, have you tried Keweenaw County Sherrif's Dept.?

By Les H. Forest Grove OR on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 10:55 am:

Yooper in Westland,

Actually I'm going up the weekend after Carnival this year. My dad and brother always came to visit me at school that week and are going up again this year so I thought I'd go up with them. It would be awesome to be there for Carnival too but I don't have that much vacation yet :)

By Jeff M, FL on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 11:31 am:

Here's my most vivid memory of blueberry picking in the Keweenaw:
I once took my wife and 4 kids on a blueberry picking expedition, driving into the woods a short way along a logging road in our new Ford station wagon. After an hour, we stopped at the car to get some water, and my wife locked the keys inside, with all of us on the outside!
This was in the days long before cell phones, and we were a mile off the road in real widerness. Finally had to resort to a big rock against the smallest window. Expensive blueberries that day!

By Chuck @ Little Betsy on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 11:31 am:

Well another beautiful day in the CC, little cold this morning for dad, so I did build that fire in the stove. Had a great trip around the point yesterday, a great pizza at Jim's in Calumet. We did go to Baraga as well, and we both took em for a few Ben F., and we've also had a great white fish dinner at the Lac La Belle resort the other night (highly recommend it). Sarah, I have found two new quads, one 2x2, and one 4x4 Honda's at Keweenaw Motor Sports, but I didn't win quite enough in Baraga to bring one back to the cottage yet, still tryin. Well, we gotta jump in the van and start cruzin again, if I can wake up grampa. Today's journey will take us to the Jam Pot if they're open, and who knows where else, we're havin a blast, how can you not up here, we are leaving tomorrow, gambling are way back, we will be back in Motown on Sunday, unless we strike it rich or get arrested. Still jealous? Come on U.P.

By Trish, WA on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 12:23 pm:

nice photos today- we have all three of these berries
growing in the PacNW, too. We call the blueberries
'huckleberries', though- a smaller, wild variety.
Funny, we grew up with the fear of the dragonflies
sewing our lips together, too... and when we played
with grasshoppers, we noticed they 'spit tobacco'.

Yes, advertising at Pasty Central brings results. The commercial sponsors listed on our home page receive thousands of 'click throughs' every month from our daily visitors, and we have a page for Real Estate listings which has been helpful to a number of folks with property for sale or rent.

By Roudy Mi on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 12:32 pm:

Was out in the Traverse area picking blue berries one time. Picking wild berries causes you to focus on the task at hand and not notice what's going on around you. Well,I happened to look around and here was this bear in the same patch and he had noticed me!!! Quickly I looked around and saw a big pine that I ran like the wind for. The lowest branch, however, was at least 10'(feet) off the ground. I leaped for it and missed!!!!

By SDC, Ferndale, MI on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 12:33 pm:

Believe it or not but here in Fashionable Ferndale we have spotted fire flies in our back and front yard. Not a "bumper crop" but more than a few to notice. Another first, we've lived here for 26 years and this is the first time we are experiencing skunks no less! I feel like I'm back living on our farm up in the ole U.P.! Dreaming of course!

We took them back to Grandma's house in Mohawk, and dad got ambitious and made two of the most beautiful blueberry pies you could ever hope to see. There was one SLIGHT problem though! He wasn't wearing his glasses and put cups of SALT in them, instead of SUGAR. I believe about 13 words, never before heard by humans, were created that day!!!!!

The site has a specific intent to keep sales and advertising out of the "free-web" design.

So please refrain from posting items for sale, advertising items for sale, advertising business etc.

It's not that we don't like you AJ, its just that the site is not licensed or intended as a sales site. Real Estate web pages etc would be your best option.

We went through this a few months ago when someone asked about advertising pictures for sale.

Thanks All for keeping this sales and advetising free.

I used to go berry picking with my short overweight neighbor. The last time we were out picking blueberries we came upon a nice patch & started picking. Unfortunately someone was in the patch with us, he stood up and we could see he wore a heavy black coat. My partner shouted a bear a bear and we started to run. The bear started after us, I was taller & longer legged than he was so I passed him up & never stopped til I got to my car. Needless to say, poor guy I never saw him again.

By Hilary on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 02:28 pm:

Hei, Hey hey.
Kutsuu means "calls" or "invites" in Finnish.
Also on yesterday's discussion about "hey" or "eh", a student at Tech a bit ago did a little study and learned that while older generations of upper Peninsulainens say "eh", younger ones say "eh". To confuse this to the mix, people in Finland will say "Hei" as an informal greeting and "Hei Hei" as a goodbye. Just a few random facts.

Hilary

Berries remind me of my grandmother putting on a wide brim hat with a net duct taped to her neck, long sleeve shirt she got from Grandpa. Thick pants, socks and work boots. Everything covered except her hands. Thoroughly drenched in Avon skin so soft. All this to keep the bugs off while berry picking. She looked like something right off of Red Green with all that duct tape.
She did make the Best jam ever!

Also the dragonfly rings a bell as part of my email address is dragonfly.:> Also I commented just this summer how few fireflies (aka lightning bugs) we had this year. They make my evening porch-sitting a magic time.

Speaking of fireflies, my backyard here in Milwaukee was full of them this summer. They were unbelievably huge - and they just seemed to float on the air currents, even up as high as my second story windows. The last few summers they have been quite abundant and I don't remember even seeing them here before that.

Hello Brita and Tina
Nice pics

Well, I got a little bit scared for a minute! I go by A.J. and in fact, this is literally the ONLY place I use Alex Tiensivu, because of the fact so many people know my relatives. So when I saw the message to A.J., without thinking, I said, "Oh, what did I do now?" (ROFL).

By Blueberry Picker on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 05:55 pm:

Any more bear berry stories out there? I pick blueberries every summer til I am blue in the face and have never run into a bear. When I'm out there I feel like I belong there just as much as they do!

By DJB on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 06:22 pm:

I HAVE SEEN A LOT OF BEAR TRACKS NEAR THE APPLE TREES NEAR NEW ALLOUEZ & IN TRAPROCK VALLEY. I ALWAYS CARRY MY 38. ALSO SAW A MT. LION IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAPROCK VALLEY LAST YEAR. I'D RATHER MEET A BEAR.

By finnferrfunn on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 06:36 pm:

Uno and Lydia, following a day of berry picking, were driving down a country road, not saying a word. An earlier berry picking discussion had led to an argument and neither of them wanted to concede their position. As they passed a barnyard of mules, goats, and pigs, Lydia asked sarcastically, "Relatives of yours?" "Yep," Uno replied, "in-laws."

Please help me. I saw something in pics 1 & 3 but can't for the life of me see anything in pic 2 aside from the blueberries & other fauna. Either I need an eye exam or someone is spoofing us.

Regarding fireflies. I too had wondered where they were but the past few yrs when I still lived in Howell there were a ton. This summer I saw them in my yard in Shiawassee County but not abundantly. So perhaps they are cylical? Who knows? Either way they are indeed cool.

Ever have one hit your windshield and still glow after their kamakaze (sp) mission? That is kinda' cool too.

Since hei is hello in finnish I can see using it as a greeting but when your leaveing would you say hello hello.?

Great berry pictures. Did anyone find a good crop
of thimbleberries anywhere there in the U.P.?
There use to be all kinds of them going down the
Trap Rock road from Laurium to Lake Linden.
Thimbleberry jam is great. Can be a problem if you
have any intestinal problems. Very seedy.

DJB, That 38 you have wont do much to the bear ,except aggravate him. might as well carry a pellet gun, its much lighter. The saying goes, if you use a light calibre gun on a bear you save the last round for yourself. You need at least a >357 or a 44 Mag.

Thanks Dad!

Great pictures by the way. Reminds me of my job this summer. We would pick wild raspberries and blackberries. They were so good.

Joanne Of White Lk - some languages other than English use the same word for hello and goodbye, e.g., Italian, "Ciao" and I believe that in Israel they say "Shalom". And I am told in Hawaii they say "Aloha" for both.

For a cure of your nostalgia check out the winter festival in Plymouth...not far from you...they have sculptors come from all over the world creating ice sculptures. I believe the date for this event is around January 12, but you can check with their Chamber of Commerce as to the exact date. It is downtown in the City Park. Enjoy

How many bears in Upper Michigan?
I was at the Porcupine Mountains and
they warn about them. They are doing
a study here in Wisconsin about Mountain Lions.
Many sightings and none confirmed. I believe
they are here. Love the wildlife and saw
a bear on Labor Day weekend. He looked
at me and just had a expression of what do you want? You have a pretty small car and you
don't bother me much! I'm guessing he was about
350lbs and I felt uneasy about being in a Honda
and of course the camera was in the trunk.
I wasn't getting out to get the camera as
he slowly walked away in the brush. Or she??
I didn't ask..

One of my favorite memories of the UP is picking those delicious little blueberries. I had blueberries and yogurt this morning; the berries were locally grown and good, but they'll NEVER touch those little wild ones.

Oh, I also have lots of fireflies in my woods. They seem to occur in hatches or something; there will be lots of them and then none, then lots again.

Ivan left us w/ lots of leaves and small limbs knocked from the trees, some tornadoes caused quite a bit of localized damage around GA. Also some power outages and flooding but nothing like the coastal areas.

When Toivo and Eino went on their first trip to Hawaii, the young lady came and put a lei on Toivo's neck and said, "Aloha from Hawaii!" Toivo said, "Ahola from Hancock." :>)
Annuder time Toivo and Eino were walking down the street and came across a construction site with a Taco-Bell sign. Toivo said, "Look at that, Eino, there's probably only two Mexicans in the whole county and already they're getting their own 'phone company!" :>) Carl Pellonpää and Doris are good friends of ours. He has been hosting the SUOMI KUTSUU show for over 42 years! If it's 'hey hey', it's not Finnish. But it may be Fat Albert. The spelling in Finnish is: 'hei hei'. Näkämiin.

On the right side of the blueberry pic, there is an 'impie' looking thing (brown) under the green and brown leaf just below center. Is that what JJJS sees?

By John Jacob Jingler on Saturday, September 18, 2004 - 12:40 am:

Ken,

No, it is more to the left and center. It is the leaf behind and above the 3 blueberries (towards left side). It looks like the little hampster is hiding behind the leaf and only can see his eye and nose.

I did go to the optometrist today and got new glasses. I then went to my shrink and we did the ''what do you see, picture thing''. I failed both tests!! Good Nite Pasty People..

I see it now JJJ! CUTE! Good eye!! Have a good weekend everyone. Sounds like it's going to be pretty nice. Get out and enjoy it while you can. (Some of us have to work--but I get off at 1pm, so I can still enjoy the better part of the day.)
