Sylvania Wildnerness, in the Ottawa National Forest, located near Watersmeet, MI, is the home to numerous delights. Kevin Henriksen was lucky enough to not only spot a Bald Eagle, but also capture this fine feathered friend with the click of his shutter. Although, the expression held on the face of this creature, doesn't indicate 'friend', it actually looks a bit unhappy with Kevin. Could be because he invaded the peaceful serenity near Crooked Lake, one of the 34 named lakes in the Wilderness area and probably this Eagle's fishing hole! If you're thinking of doing your own line casting in one of those Sylvania lakes, be sure you check out the special fishing regulations that apply, then pack up your creel and head to the recreation area!

Let's pause and remember our fellow countrymen and women who lost their lives three years ago. The peaceful scene above is appropriate for this day of reflection. The Eagle symbolizes our freedom - we haven't forgotten!

Frist Post of the day. Hard to believe it has been three years since the lives of our nation and most of allthe lives of our young adults lives changed so much.

Beautiful pictures to remember 911.

Thinking about our brave sons and daughters serving the USA throughout the world. We are praying for you...

By Karl from Cadillac on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 08:35 am:

Can anyone tell me how the COLORS are doing in the UP? I like to go between Munising to Copper Harbor to ONtonagon. This is the 3rd time I have asked this week...

By JJ MI on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 08:38 am:

Apt picture, as we remember the loss of 9/11 the eagle still stands - GOD bless America!

At the botom of the page - click on HOME - looking down the SUPPORTERS of this excellent website, click on John Dee's. Look at the selections (tabs in the upper left hand of his -very cool website), and click on NCN, and that will bring up a map of the midwest, click on where you intend to go for an excellent up to date "cam" - you can see the color, snow, or what ever is there (or lack there of), proving this website has so many resources... While back on the "home" page brouse around, it is worth your time - and no - I live in the L.P. and am viewing - not advertising (I think)...

By maijaMI on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 09:04 am:

Fantastic picture of the eagle and his surroundings. He represents freedom, but also equilibrium. He lives in beauty, such as the lovely tree and sky in the picture; helps keep the balance of nature; and sees none as his inferior.

By RCW on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 09:07 am:

Karl Not to much color as yet. just a few here and there.

By maijaMI on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 09:10 am:

To monitor color development live, go to the Michigan Tech live web cams. The "view cam" gives a live shot of Houghton where you can see the trees turning. Sorry, I don't have the direct link.

By Tom , Toledo on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 09:23 am:

Good Morning. What a great picture. A big THANK YOU to everyone who has defended the freedom that the Eagle represents.

By Louise in Hancock on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 09:38 am:

Not much in the way of color around the Keweenaw. About 1% is what my husband thinks. We are waiting for them to change so we can go for a ride to the Porkies. Should be good in another couple of weeks. Great pictures today.

By keweenaw girl on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 09:59 am:

Karl from Cadillac: The color season is 3 weeks ahead of schedule this year and is forecasted to be short and sweet. Three weeks ago a drive up to Copper Harbor revealed turning leaves and Labor Day Weekend from Houghton to Twin Lakes (m26 south) was already colorful. We can forecast all we want, but remember, this is God's country and He does what He sees fit! And that's why we all live here.

By SarahK, MI on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 10:02 am:

I saw eagles in trees outside my hotel room in Alaska. Awesome experience. Alaska, a place that reminds me of the UP. Not too many places like it, UP or Alaska.

By D, Lake Linden, MI on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 10:03 am:

I'm proud to be an American; the liberty to take for granted living in a peaceful neighborhood, where people try understanding the differences between one another, and "Hate" isn't a part of our everyday lives. Instead we believe in causes where fighting becomes a part of our lives when our freedom is threatened; today we remember how so many died, living with the losses of loved ones, and never forgetting why we are sacrificing our countrymen and womens' lives for the freedom we cherish. God Bless the USA. Thank you to all Americans serving for the goo old USA. I love you!

Anybody know why the plane is still sitting on the tarmac at the airport?

By DH, Temecula, CA on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 12:45 pm:

Ert,

There's major fishing tourney (Professional Walleye Tour) in the area this weekend. I'm guessing its related to that.

May we all remember, and may God Bless, all who suffered losses 3 years ago today. I guess, we ALL suffered losses really, but you all know what I mean.

The horrid thoughts can't leave my head
Or comprehend all of the dead
That day in September when we shed many tears
That day in September when we were filled with fears
That day in September we'll remember for years

By Just wondering on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 12:59 pm:

Did the plane deliver a Football team to play at Tech this weekend? Or, a large group for another event?

By Scott, Wi. on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 02:27 pm:

Proud to me American as anybody should be,
you feel it when you have the freedom to wander
the country and Upper Michigan at will.
No passports,ID's or checkpoints. We are truly
free to do whatever we want. People have
died to allow us this freedom. I think of WWII
and other wars. But I can't help but feel we
are in a different war now. One we created.
We are deep in the muck and we put ourselves there. How does it end?

I feel for our seviceman and woman. What
a tough hard job they have. They are suffering
for us so we can drive about free looking at
fall colors.

Right or wrong war, they are paying the price
of our freedom...

Hey Jeff Koski...the Eagle has landed, in Grand Blanc

By k2, fville MI on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 03:15 pm:

Does anyone have any information on the BIG PLANE that is shown on the Houghton County Airport webcam? It's definitely not NW/Mesaba and to me looks a lot like a DC9-10!

By sue-sue loveland, oh on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 03:17 pm:

K2,
The plane was noticed yesterday. Its a Boeing 737 operated as a charter by Pace Airlines. Someone surmised that it was transporting this week's MTU football opponents.

By Grimace on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 05:04 pm:

Gosh , tough to tell if this eagle is male or female, kinda reminds me of grandma, waitin to spank you for smartin off . Eagles mate for life,

By Fran,Ga on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 05:55 pm:

I will never forget the sight of the 2 planes hitting the towers-an absolute horror. I do remember and want to thank all of our men and women who are serving and have served our country in the past and those who gave thier lives for us.

By thepiscator-IL on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 06:17 pm:

The plane at the airport is not carrying
fisherman. The tournement on the Keewenaw Waterway is next weekend.

By Carole on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 07:07 pm:

Fran, I totally agree with you about the fictious 'Toivo', and also found it strange that he did not post about Dan.

By Candy, CA on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 07:28 pm:

Kevin, thanks for the great shots today, and the rest in your gallery. Wonderful!

And happy 23rd birthday today to Martha and Luke Frantti from your west coast auntie!

welcome to Pastyland Sue-sue, enjoy the ride!

By JJJ, MI on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 09:40 pm:

Please someone let us know if Toivo is real. I would hate to think some phantom was traveling all over the U.S. last year! Toivo are you out there?

By Ret/Navy/Deb, orl fl on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 10:17 pm:

Good evening,
Well I have been thinking of all the thanks and god blesses that our service people have been recieving.
Sometimes it seems they do not answer. But believe me it is well appreciated and greatly Appreciated. We do not say thank you back in words, only in what we do. But everyone needs to hear a Thank-you back also to know if it is appreciated. So for the service men and women thank you for your support and keep it coming. It helps more then you know. Not just the service men and women, but the Fireman, Policeman and the Medical personnel. It keeps us going. We THANK-YOU AND GOD BLESS ALL

By Yooper girl far from home on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 10:24 pm:

Did Dan take a trip to Australia last year? If not, then Toivo isn't Dan.

By Mark in Copper Harbor on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 10:25 pm:

Hey ... Karl from Cadillac. This being my 21st year in God's Country(and also being a purebred Yooper)... the leaves change at the same time every year. The last week in September is normaly when the foliage is at its' peak in the Copper Harbor area.High and sustained winds, clear the trees of their leaves in a hurry however ,so the weather plays a big part in this equation. Oh by the way... plus or minus a week!

By toivo was someones imaginary friend....I think on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 10:47 pm:

how do we REALLY know Toivo took a trip around the world. We have no proof...

Toivo usually does Saturday posts and lately he hasn't been. Wonder whats up?

By JMIDUP on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 10:51 pm:

On the internet you can be anyone or anything you want.

TOIVO = WHEATMAN = CHARLIE :) = PASTY BOY

By hmmmmmmmmmmm on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 10:52 pm:

Toivo stopped doing the Saturday posts the week before Dan died!

By Ken and Mimi from da UP{ on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 10:57 pm:

Maybe Toivo's girl friend from da west coast could give us a clue? Was her name Tina? Are we victims of some kinda hoax?

By mike il on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 11:18 pm:

Love this site!!!! Have been looking & reading here for 2yr. The best site I have ever found. Have been coming to the UP since my parents started me in 1952. This is my first post but I love to read all the comments every day. Have found some of the places that have been talked about. Yes, still come up 1 or 2 times (at least) a yr. Beautiful area, wonderful people Will come back! This place seems like home

By Frank on Sunday, September 12, 2004 - 12:00 am:

The UP is the best place on earth. I went to MTU and so is my son. Wish I could live there!

Gods speed to the 911 heros

By JMIDUP on Sunday, September 12, 2004 - 01:00 am:

I am pretty sure Tina on da west coast was Toivo's
sister. But I could be wrong...

By Candy, CA on Sunday, September 12, 2004 - 01:41 am:

I think Tina was someone's sister that Toivo met...and, when you click the contact us button on Toivo and Eino's Pasty Sauce site (http://www.fudgiepastie.com/the.store?page=fudgietoivo.html), up comes wheaty(at)fudgiepastie.com.

coincidence? Could our erudite Mr. Wheatman be our plain spoken Toivo?

By K of AZ on Sunday, September 12, 2004 - 01:58 am:

Think you have come unto something interesting Candy of CA... This sure is an interesting site. Never a 'dull moment'. The way we like it.

By JMIDUP on Sunday, September 12, 2004 - 02:04 am:

Toivo's secret message when he took his vacation was that his real name wasn't Toivo. I think the whole trip was just someones imagination running wild. Guess we'll never know.

By PSmitSC on Sunday, September 12, 2004 - 08:59 am:

Looks like some one over slept this morning. That lovely fall weather can cause that to happen.

By Shirley Laurin on Sunday, September 12, 2004 - 09:23 am:

Yesterday as my husband (Major-Civil Air Patrol)put our flag on the house, it felt like just yesterday we were attacked in our beautiful country. Our lives go on, but there will forever remain a deep pain in our hearts. God bless the families of those lost on that fateful day, as well as the men and women serving in our country and in foreign lands.

With heartfelt gratitude,
