By
Mary Drew at Pasty Central on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 07:24 am:

This little Chippy seems to know what he wants and isn't afraid to go after it either! Once again, Dennis Kemper was in the right place, at the right time, with camera in hand, to snap a unique photo of a Keweenaw Critter. I knew a lady who used to feed peanuts to a chipmunk, right out of her back door. He was a regular visitor and she would toss three peanuts out there for him. He'd stuff all three in his puffed up little cheeks and away he'd go. Looks like this guy ate a few too many peanuts and then needed something to wash them down :o)

By the way, Dennis also has a few shots from last weekend's Pasty Fest 2004 in the Guest Gallery. Have a good day!

By LD/NJ on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 07:27 am:

Good Morning from NJ. Looks like a beautifull day here.

By Betty, Olympia, WA on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 07:29 am:

To JLK from Olympia - Where in the UP are you from? My husband and I live on a houseboat here in Olympia. I am from Lake Linden and Paul is from Calumet. GOOD MORNING EVERYONE!

By smn/Clearwater, FL on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 07:32 am:

Good Morning! This Chippy knows what she wants too; however, you all Yoopers will have to tell me where I can get the best Pasty when I get to CC area in August. Love the photo and the site. I found you by accident......a good accident.

By Ralph, stuck in Fl. on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 07:49 am:

Good morning from Florida, hope everyone has a great day.

By Roudy Mi on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 07:54 am:

Mouse with racing stripes? Hope he calls a cab.

By Mr. Bill on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 07:55 am:

Next to baby pictures, critter pictures tie with landscapes for my favorites!

By JWilson, Ohio on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 07:58 am:

They love peanuts for sure! Several years ago, while camped in Ontonagon, I snapped several pictures of a chipper that had chewed the plastic cover on the peanut can...just a big enough hole for him to get through and help himself! I watched him as he would tip the can over, roll it around while he stuck his body inside, stealing the nuts! One day it almost rolled off the trailer! Needless to say, he finished them all!

By Tom, Green Bay on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 08:10 am:

The term "chippy" when referring to a chipmunk seems to be used in the CC. I remember that as a kid.
One of the "other" places to get good pasties is Tony's in Larium.
Sure liked the pictures of the doings in Calumet. Was sorry to have to leave before going there.

By displaced Yooper headed for vacation! on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 08:17 am:

By bek, fond du lac on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 08:19 am:

It's funny that the subject of chippy's came up today. I just told my husband I saw a chippy run under the porch a few days ago. My daughter asked "what's a chippy?". Oh lord, it hit me like a ton of bricks....my kids are city slickers! : )

By Georgie, MO on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 08:34 am:

He's a real cutie, eh? Hope to see some of them when we get up north in September. Then we'll be singing too!! Can't wait!!

By Bath Tub Surfer on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 08:37 am:

How about.....Chippy Pasties?

By anita, mi on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 08:46 am:

good morning. love the pic. we have a chippy that visits us everyday. he comes and sits on our window sill. up close and personal.

By JimR - GR Home of much bigger Micro-bears Mich on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 09:06 am:

Time for a family chipmunk story...

When my daughter was 8 or 9 years old, she was terrorized by one of these little guys...We had one in our house once - we knew it was around, but couldn't find it. She was in her room, getting ready for bed. She picked up her PJ's and out popped one of these guys. I don't know if it was blood curdling screem that killed the poor bugger, or the crash into the slightly open door - swinging the "choke-the-chippy" direction. But he met his maker right then and there (poor chippy...).

It's about 12 years later and she is still deathly affraid of the little guys.

I like what the boy scouts call these little creatures - "Micro-bears"

By Brenda - Yooper from the Swamps of Menominee on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 09:19 am:

To Displaced Yooper:
Great tune that should be sung by all that are coming to the GREAT NORT LAND!! Gets you in a good mood for that higher latitude.

By smn/Clearwater, FL on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 09:28 am:

Thanks Tom. Sounds like you're in the UP quite often. I will be sure to visit Tony's.

By mckenneyp, GR MI on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 09:40 am:

smn - Tony's is worth the visit, make sure you get some Saffron bread and Havitesu (I'm sure I slaughtered that Spelling) from Tony's also. I also enjoy their Pizza Burgers. This makes year number 21 for Family Vacations to the Copper Country.

As for 'Chippys'... When I was in School at NMU I had several freinds that were UP natives that were always talking about Chippys, me being from Downstate except for the yearly 2 or 3 week vacations since I was 5 to the UP (I was labled a 'Trooper' - Combo Yooper & Troll, not to be confused with the nobel men with a Red Light on the top of their car) I finally asked what the heck they were talking about, and she just pointed and said, that it's a Chippy! I said it's a Chipmunk, she just said whatever it's a Chippy. However I still can't get over it and call them that... Oh well, 28 days to Vacation!

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 09:44 am:

Hey! Maybe Elvira is really Toivo? Don't get so upset Elvira, just think of us all as crazy cousins!

By Mary Ellen, Illinois on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 09:59 am:

I was just in the U.P. last week for the Copper Country Homecoming, and when I visited the Laurium Manor Inn, I happened upon Toni's and had a great pasty. Good recommendation! The bakery at the counter looked great too.

By TLM on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 10:32 am:

Anyone see George Hite?

His web page
Eagle Harbor Web hasn't been updated in over a month. Hope that he is recovering from the surgery okay.

By Yooper in Indiana on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 10:35 am:

george is probably off on one of his summer sails on the Big Lake.

By Missin the UP from NJ on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 10:35 am:

It IS a beautiful day in NJ, but still would rather be in the Yoop.

Love them little chippies. Got a family living under our front porch for years, now.
Sorry for the little (now big) girl who's afaid of them.
I never heard of them biting anyone...? If anyone has, maybe better keep the story to ourselves for the sake of "JimR's" daughter!

By Paul & Cora, Webberville Trolls on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 10:42 am:

Nosy little buggers!
In the fall of 2003 our neighbors and us took the Agawa train to Agawa Canyon on our way to a fishing camp on a lake north of there. Just the 4 of us were sitting on the seats there at the station waiting for the other train to pick us up. Something caught my wife's eye and lo and behold, one of your "chippys" had crawled into her purse which was on the deck right under her seat and stole part of a chocolate bar she had in the purse! He jumped out of her purse and made a bee line for the bushes with it. He stopped several times before disappearing and she was able to get a picture of the end of the big "theft". Brave little creatures!

By UP_gal on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 11:00 am:

I tell ya...if that chippy stole MY chocolate I would be shootin'more than film..if ya know what I mean.

By d.peterson. wi. on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 11:01 am:

good morning betty from olympia.my brothers name is paul and i am from calumet also. guess who?

By lk, c.c. on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 11:15 am:

mckenneyp, I think you mean "povatica" at Tonis. Povatica is the thinly rolled up bread with cinnamon and walnuts. We said pov-a-teet-sa.
(I worked at Toni's for years)It was a great place to work!

By Dave, MI on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 11:26 am:

You can get GREAT pasties from http://www.pasty.com/order.html

By Dave, MI on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 11:30 am:

By the way, I have many memories of sitting on the back deck, watching the chippies and gophers. They seemed to never stop coming. They used to climb the cedar post to the bird house at the top..limber little guys..and eat all the seed.

By David S,. - CA. on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 11:58 am:

Gee, after such a turbulent day (yesterday) over the correct components involved in making a pasty, we sure have lightened up when "Chippy" arrived on the scene. We should all know by now that Americans love 'word games'; calling a thing something other than what it actually is. Here in California, illegal aliens no longer want to be called illegal aliens; the new preferred term is 'undocumented workers'. Word games

By larryk, nh on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 12:29 pm:

lk,c.c.: Don't remember if Toni's was open in the late 40's or early 50's, but I do remember that we got povatica on occasion from somewhere. That was GREAT stuff. And the pronounciation was the same as yours.

By Trish,WA on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 12:38 pm:

Does Toni's mother-in-law Kiti still sell her rosemaling
work in the shop? I have a little red sled that she made
hanging in my kitchen.

By Greta, Milw on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 12:59 pm:

Growing up in Ironwood during the 50-60's, the boys on our block made chippy traps. One summer there was a contest to see who could collect the most tails. Don't remember what the prize was. There are a gazillion chippes at the family cottage on Lake Gogebic and one summer there was one we called Caesar - because he just domineered the whole bunch. The minute he heard the peanut can open, he made front and center and the other couldn't get their couple of treats until he was finished grabbing his. They are pretty bold for such small creatures. Caesar would even chase the ducks away that came by for seeds under the bird feeders.

By Jean CA on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 01:27 pm:

I have a dog that's just slightly bigger than a chippy.(6lbs.) He chases them, literally by the hour, but they always outsmart him. They go in the front of the woodpile and out the back while he frantically paces in front. Then they yell at him. But he still hunts and hunts and hunts. He has never, in 4 years, caught one.

By finlander, painesdale on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 01:48 pm:

Kudos to Bush visiting the UP!! He will be in Marquette on July 13th at the Lakeview Arena. Get your tickets to go they are going fast!!

By bill on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 02:25 pm:

wonder if he turned the can in for the deposit!

By Pasty Lover on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 02:33 pm:

I was at Pasty Fest and heard no mention of Toivo. Did anyone see him or get to meet him?

My eyes were on the sky in hopes to see the famous Toivo of Toivola make a grand entrance.

By Candy, CA on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 02:39 pm:

I have lived in California for nearly 5 years and haven't seen a chippy -- even though they loved to dig up my garden, I sure miss seeing the little cuties! My parents had chippies so tame that they'd come and get sunflower seeds from our hands.

By MJS on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 02:43 pm:

Hello from Burbank, California. I hope summer comes soon back home in the Copper Country!

By Ms. Katie on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 02:43 pm:

To displaced yooper...thanks a lot! Now every time I heard that song I'll hear your clever version. I envy your going up there soon. I'm still looking for any new picture of the Pasty Fest. Looking for ideas for my visit next year.

By Elvira on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 03:19 pm:

It's what's up front that counts, if you know what I mean, Marsha.

By marge in cincinnati on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 03:20 pm:

My daughter's mother-in-law called them "tiger mouse" when she was little. Clever, huh? She grew up to be a biologist.

By jean, West Texas a.ka. on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 03:32 pm:

Well, my trip to the U.P. was great...now back in Texas and the oppressive heat. I remember Tony's in Laurium and the spice cookies they had. Do they still make them???? I miss the cool weather.............

By pasty trivia on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 03:34 pm:

pasty = a tiddy oggie in Cornwall

By Joe Finn, Rhinelander, Wi on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 03:51 pm:

Last year the chippys discovered my tomatoes. They started eating them like it was the best food in town. So I went to the county extension to get a trap. The women there was well aware of the problem, and said she trapped thirty five. Asking what she did to dispose of them, she said she drowned them in the trap. I trapped one and my wife found out the final solution. That was the end of my chippy trapping. They got all the tomatoes, and I didn't plant any this year. Victory for the chippys!

By pasty trivia on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 04:23 pm:

Chippies like tomatoes... oh,what I learn from this
group!

By rp another one on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 04:26 pm:

By Gliderrider, MI on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 04:54 pm:

I want to thank you Mary, for using my "Thirsty Chippy" pic today. Could not resist silently watching from a corner of my deck to see what he would get into.

By BigB, Minneapolis on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 06:16 pm:

By YooperTo-Be in 2005, Saginaw on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 06:42 pm:

Sharon Smith up in Copper Harbor had a visitor at her bird feeders this afternoon. Check out her archived photos for today and see the bear on her deck railing! She had to bring in her feeders early!

By Therese from just below the bridge on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 06:47 pm:

Ever hear the one about the fish and chips joint run by a monastery? Someone asked a brown-robed man, 'Are you the fish friar?' and he replied,
"No, I'm the chip munk'.

Ooooo, sorry about that!

By J, OR on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 06:55 pm:

I used to live in Ishpeming in a house that my brother and I rented from our father. A tribe of rather ingenius chippies had found a way to get from the outside of the house into our kitchen cupboards. One night, my brother and I and his kids were watching movies and eating popcorn in the living room. When I turned around, I found that the whole gang of chippies were cleaning up what the kids left behind and enjoying the movie with us.

By Betty, Olympia, WA on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 06:58 pm:

dpeterson, WI and rp, another one in MI, what a small and FUN world we live in, hey? (I haven't said "hey" like that in a long time:). Out here everyone would think I was from Canada, lol. ppeterson, a third one in WA, is going to get such a kick out of this when he gets home from work. Check in later, I'm sure he will throw his two cents in.

By Betty, Olympia, WA on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 07:02 pm:

dpeterson, I remember driving one of your Fords from Lake Linden to Calumet in a blizzard one night long ago. Good memories.

By MK in CA on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 07:16 pm:

Elvira - I've been dating the daughter of a horror actor for about eight years. I noticed that a lot of people in that area of the industry are vegetarians. I'm not, but my girlfriend is, as is her dad. I believe Linda Blair is too. Well, more power to you. It always makes me smile to see my girlfriend redirect a line of ants for hours so they won't die in the house. Animals pick up on that; animals that shy away from me always flock to her. I have to pull her out of petting zoos just to let the other kids have a turn. She can stay there all day. Well, if you are the real Elvira, I did catch your show at Knotts and it was great! Always been a fan!

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 07:20 pm:

Thanks for the bear info Saginaw Y2B. The bear is on Sharon Smith's deck at 4:03.

By Bthecute1, San Jose on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 09:44 pm:

It won't always be #24. The numbers change with the time. Check out 4:03 p.m. and 1:48 p.m. for some cool shots of the bear.

By AZ on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 11:04 pm:

Where can I find today's webcam archive. Would like to see the bear.

Try this link:
A view from the field - Sharon Smith. The archive numbers change each time another shot is saved, but it's the 4:03 p.m. picture and the 1:48 p.m. picture.
