Last week, someone posed a question about a dark purple/black color flower, spotted growing in the woods. Another Pasty Cam viewer replied, that it's known as a Jack in the Pulpit. We have a treat for all you wild flora lovers. Tex Degraves, was with camera in hand when he spotted one and shared it in his Guest Gallery album. You have to admit, it is quite a unique looking flower, but watch your pets around them. The bulbs, stems and possibly the leaves have a low toxicity rating, which could affect all animals!

Good Morning, It's still raining here downstate. Happy Birthday Dave.

By EL Nelson, New Mexico on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 06:54 am:

Good morning all from New Mexico! I sure miss the UP. I love this site because it lets me feel like I am home if only for a minute. Have a great day everyone. Oh, and it is only 4:56 AM here, ; )

By Julie Stevens Beck on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 07:15 am:

Good morning. I remember as a child going to Gratiot Lake, up north in the Keweenaw with my grandmother where we would go on "nature walks" and look for Jack in the Pulpit. Their cottage was next to the public landing at the lake and we spent a lot of time in the woods and in the water. Grandma always said Jack in the Pulpit, "he was a good man". Maybe it was because both her husband and her son were known as Jack. (Jack Stevens of snowmobile trail name and his father John, "Jack"). She also taught me that if you carefully bent the top of the pulpit in half and rubbed both sides together you could hear "Jack talking".

Great picture. Yucca's are already passed the blooming stage here. Best you see out on the road is a Russian Thistle. Morning!

By tc on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 07:54 am:

Beautiful photo! I had been given one years ago by a neighbor collected -- I regret -- in the wild on Drummond, that after a few years spread to make a brave show in the late spring. I miss that garden.

By SLK, MI on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 08:04 am:

I have a beautiful picture of Jack from early this year in the woods, but it is in it's green stage. That was near Grand Rapids. They are lovely.

By julie b., MI on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 08:35 am:

A few years back a robin 'planted' several jack-in-the-pulpits right by my front door! Not exactly typical territory for them! Its a beautiful sight each spring.

TO DAVE, LAURIUM...
Haven't seen you here in a few days but I have a favor to ask. I have heard that the flags at the George Gipp Memorial Park are at half mast to honor Ronald Reagan, "The Gipper". Would it be possible for you to take a photo of this for us for tommorow, our national day of mourning ? I am not able to get there today to take one myself. I have heard that President Reagan had donated money for the recent renovation of that park and was unable, due to his health, to visit the site personally.

By Tony MI on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 09:53 am:

Good morning everyone. Sure is nice to be out of school! Does anyone know of any other daily UP photo sites like this? not that it would be as good :)

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 10:09 am:

Good Morning,
I agree with camwatcher for that picture. That would be great.

By Doug Smith, Wixom, MI on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 10:37 am:

The "seed pod" for this flower is really different too. In the fall, the flower is replaced by a bunch of small red round globules (for lack of a better word) at the top of the "stick". They like to grow in soggy, moist, areas, especially along river banks.

By Lorelei, Mi on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 10:58 am:

Is this plant on the endangered list? Seems like I remember hearing something like that while growing up. I always loved this flower.

There are wonderful pictures here:

No other site that I know of quite like this one. Certainly no daily updates.

By Debbie -Painesdale Mine & Shaft on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 11:33 am:

I agree, next to pasty.com this site:
http://www.copperrange.org/image.htm
is awesome. Kevin Musser is an avid copper range railroad fan, and he doesn't just stop at railroad. He searchs for anything Copper Range, or Upper Peninsula. Awesome dude! I think MTU archives or maybe Kew. Nat'l Park should offer him employment so he can live up here, where his heart is? Right Kevin???

By Naunse from L'Anse on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 12:39 pm:

So how are the black flies about now? If the photographer was trapsing through the woods, I'm hoping he came out alive. My husband and I have some land near L'Anse (hence the pen-name given to me by a friend from Calumet!) and we're wondering when it will be safe to get up there and enjoy our woods. Thank you!

By Tricia, Calumet, MI on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 01:44 pm:

I second that Debbie!

By H. Donn de Yampert, PT, DPT. on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 02:56 pm:

Big league photograph from an avid outdoorsman and lover of nature. Congratulations to Pasty on a very fine daily photograph selection.

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 04:34 pm:

Where's Dave from Laurium? Probably out golfing??? Hopefully he's out taking those pictures requested. :)

By Dave, Laurium on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 08:08 pm:

smile camwatcher....Wish I could help you out, but I had a little accident the other day when I was taking photos along the canal. Cam took quite a bump, had to send it in for repair, under waaranty fortunately, as long as they don't know the circumstances. Sorry, I have seen the memorial, wish I had a back-up cam...guess I will have to get one as a special gift to myself....

By camwatcher on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 08:15 pm:

Thanks for your reply Dave. Sorry to hear about your camera. I would be heartbroken if it were mine. I dropped one once and it took them about 15 minutes to tell me it had been dropped and I picked up the tab for the repair. Yee-ouch.
We've been wondering if you were golfing or painting today ? LOL

By Dave, Laurium on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 08:22 pm:

As far as golfing or painting, I did a little bit of both today, didn't realize how much i would miss having my cam around, I have missed a lot of neat photo-ops the past few days. Oh well, I'll try to mend my wounded pride on the golf course again tomorrow....By the way, great picture of the 'Jack in the pulpit'....Where's the Queen??

By H from Oklahoma on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 08:29 pm:

I really hope that you people realize how lucky you are by living where you do. I made my FIRST trip to the U.P. last week. I WILL visit as often as I can. I didn't get much of a chance to look around but I will make a point of it next time. Not until I left did I realize just how much I would miss it. I hope everybody is having a great day.

By Bthecute1, San Jose on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 09:39 pm:

Oh, it's a beautiful day in our neighborhood, lots of sunshine. Our natural air conditioning has made its's appearance. (Fog coming over the Pacific last night, to cool us off) Soft puffy clouds floating lazily across the sky, anice breeze making the leaves flutter. I use to like to listen to the Linden trees in the Upper Peninsula, as their leaves sounded like castanets playing. The price of gas has come down a whole 2 cents. 2.27.9, 2.37.9 and 2.47.9

By JBM .CenterLine Mi on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 10:56 pm:

Hey I found gas down here for $1.83. Took me by surprise. A nice one at that
