By
Mary Drew at Pasty Central on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 06:16 am:

Thanks to Rebecca Jennings, we're able to take a virtual walk on the beach. Now don't ask me where this lovely stretch of beachsand lies, but if you look closely there's a hint for those that might recognize the distinct lighthouse-like tower. The patterns in the sand, the water rolling in, the solitude on the beach.....soon the Keweenaw will be warming up and beaches such as this will have more than just Rebecca and her Kodak on its shores.

Only 44 days until the big event in Calumet - a celebration of the U.P.'s favorite food!

Pasty Fest 2004

By Bthe cute1 on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 06:27 am:

Good morning from San Jose. That water looks sooooooooooo cold!

By PFD, MI on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 06:30 am:

Good morning from East Houghton. Would that be Bete Gris??

By Bob Fartas, MI on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 06:31 am:

Ever notice how many trolls cannot pronounce the word "pasty?"

By maijaMI on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 06:32 am:

to Jiggs in California: I don't remember more about Lydia, but the chair and dress were huge, so she must have been very obese. There was a smiling picture of her as well, and she looked happy. Maybe Ken and Mimi from da UP would know.

Is the beach Bete Gris?

By ywb/yooperwannabe/richmond on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 06:33 am:

Good Morning from Richmond Michigan.
Good point Bob. I am always correcting people on how to pronounce pasty. Very annoying when it is our state food! Have a wonderful weekend to all!!!

By camwatcher on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 06:46 am:

Isn't that a "fantasy house"? Lighthouse-style on the beach of Superior. It will have us pasty-fans dreaming all day. It would sure be hard to leave home and go to work if you lived there.

By Wannabe Yooper on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 06:53 am:

That looks like 5-mile point. You are looking at it from the other side - meaning you are not looking at as if you came from Eagle River, but as if you are coming thru Ahmeek.

By Wannabe Yooper on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 06:56 am:

Now, that I look at it again....It might be Bete Gris too. But, I thought the sands were whiter in Bete Gris. Maybe the 1.8 billion gallons of sewer/drain run off that Milwaukee released into Lake Michigan this week made it to da Keweenasw already. :)

By Kosk in Toronto on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 06:58 am:

Tomorrow I'll be home in the U.P. working
hard to open and spruce up the cottage, eat
pasties and lake trout and breathe the air in
God's country. Hooray! Only for the Victoria
Day weekend, but then we'll be back in
August. I can hardly wait!

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 07:04 am:

Morning from Amarillo--Windy here today.

By Gary K , New Jersey on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 07:04 am:

If the sands didn't slope toward the water there wouldn't be any lake! We must be a little sleepy today!

By Dave, Laurium on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 07:08 am:

Looks awfully familiar to me. I believe I went right by that area yesterday, I think this photo I took is not too far from the beach pictured above...
Big Traverse

By Dan, Lauium on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 07:08 am:

That is definately Big Taverse. It's facing SW'ly
not too far from the road to Rice Lake.

By db on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 07:15 am:

our favorite beach--big traverse. 10 miles from lake linden. 3 miles past rice lake.

By Roudy Mi on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 07:35 am:

Look at Sharon Smiths' cam 7:18 picture. It's either a big bird or a UFO.

By Marko in Columbus Ohio on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 07:42 am:

Gotta love the pic of Big Traverse, right across the street from Mom and Dad's place, Fuzzy and Marilyn Waara

By Tim C, $Bay on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 07:56 am:

Fire Engine
The Daily Mining Gazette carried a story, yesterday, about an old steam fire engine that may return to its original home in Laurium. I would be interested in seeing an "old time shoebox" picture(s) of the fire engine. Does anyone have a picture? Pictures of any of the old steam fire engines in the Copper Country would be welcome. TIA.

By Rebecca Jennings, Lake Linden on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 08:38 am:

Thanks "camwatcher" As you go down the old "Mink Farm Road"- there is a small beach, rightbefore the park, and yes, there is a lighthouse-like-house, closer to the park. For those of you who guessed Lake Superiour, you are correct!!

By Lee, Mi on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 08:40 am:

Lydia may have been Big Lydia who I think is listed in Calumet Copper Country Metropolis book.
I borrowed my copy out but the last name was something like Wiideman, changed from Wetalinen?

By Jiggs in California on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 08:51 am:

Thanks. Sounds like a different Lydia

By crusin'thebackroads on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 08:56 am:

Hey Bob F., it seems to me trolls have more trouble pronouncing sauna than pasty! I spent 4 years at MSU trying to get my classmates to say "sauna" correctly!! ha ha!

By Mohawk on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 09:10 am:

Dave, Luarium, great pictures! It really gives you a feel for the beauty of that side of the Keweenaw.

What's Pasty Fest? Never heard of this before!

By Doug the Troll, Wixom, MI on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 11:53 am:

Nothing better than an early morning walk along the Big Lake .... or maybe an afternoon walk .... or even an early evening walk!

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 12:11 pm:

If you pronounce "pasty" wrong doesn't it mean something else?

I thought it was like this "Pa stee?" (Pa like as in your Pa/Dad) Am I close?

By Dave, Laurium on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 12:13 pm:

Pass-tee....

By David S. - CA on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 12:22 pm:

Hi all,
Is this the first Pasty Fest and where exactly is Agasszi park?

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 12:22 pm:

Actually the correct pronunciation for Pasty is: "Pass tee".

Oops...looks like Dave, Laurium beat me to the punch!
You can hear it yourself at Merriam Webster Online, just click on the little red speaker after the Main Entry word "pasty".

As for the Pasty Fest, you can find out more info here: Pasty Central Pasty Fest Plus, here's a post by Charlie Hopper about the festivities:

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Wednesday, May 12, 2004 - 08:38 pm:
Speaking of the 4th of July, we have noticed numerous references about the possibility of a 'Pasty' get together this summer, for Pasty Cam regulars and pasty lovers in general. Well, the folks at Mainstreet Calumet have extended a formal invitation to hold such a get-together at Agassiz Park in Calumet on the afternoon of July 4th.

If you are going to be in the Keweenaw for the Copper Country Homecoming and Old Settlers Ball, this will be one of the final events. We're planning now to have a pasty judging competition, some games and surprises, and even... FREE PASTIES to the first 400 visitors to stop by the Pasty Central pavilion in Agassiz Park. More details will be available in the coming days, but for now, be sure to mark your calender for "Pasty Fest 2004" in Calumet on the fourth of July... We promise you'll get away in plenty of time to catch the firworks up in Copper Harbor or down at South Range.
By Roudy Mi on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 12:24 pm:

Do we have to throw in allowances for accents? Like pass-tee might sound a little different in other parts of the country. We're talking the kings english here right?

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 12:24 pm:

Ahhh, Ok, I was close! :) Pass Tee it is! :)

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 12:25 pm:

Now, if I can just get Sauna with that Finnish sound to it like my Dad! :)

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 12:28 pm:

Sauna...same routine: Finnish Sauna pronunciation.
The second little red speaker is the correct Finnish sound.

By Rivera on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 12:29 pm:

Ahh, the greatly cherished pasty-also known as the "Gut Bomb" in several local circles.

By Finnish Troll, Lower MI on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 12:30 pm:

Shelly/Yankee in Texas:
Sow-Na..... as opposed to non-yoopers who say
saw-na...grinds me to know end.

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 12:34 pm:

Ya, I can hear it. Sow na, thats how my Dad says it. Thanks! He'll be so proud of me! Ha Ha
Sow as in the pig right?

By Roger J. Novi, Mi on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 12:34 pm:

Hey "Crusin" I agree with you 100% on the pronunciation of sauna. I would just tell the linguistically challenged to throw more water on the rocks. That way we could cool things off. That's the advice Uncle Wayne always gave me.

By RGG - Cedar Rapids on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 12:35 pm:

Roudy: You know you're addicted to Pasty Cam when you actually spend a long time searching for the 7:18 picture on Sharon Smith's cam, just because someone saw a big bird on it!

By Jukuri's Fan on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 01:57 pm:

thanks, Mary Drew, for all the great links -- I think we should
petition the Mirriam Webster folks to eliminate the "wrong"
sauna pronunciation!

By Brian, Chicagoland on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 02:31 pm:

When I was at MTU in the 80s, we regularly had pasty's in the dorm cafeteria. We would deliberatly mispronounce it as pay-stee to tease the ladies that served us. They were wonderful and went along with the joke even though I'm sure they had heard it a million times.

By Dave, Laurium on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 02:40 pm:

Heikki was coming out of Pickleman's Pantry in Newberry carrying a bag of pasties.
Uno was getting gas and saw him with the bag. "Hey, Heikki, If I guess how many pasties you have in dat bag, can I have one?"
Heikki replied, "If you can guess how many I have, I'll give you both of them."
Uno answered, "Holywha Heikki!! Okay, I think you have five of them."

Beach Walk---I'm almost positive that this is the Bete Grise beach, looking south towards the "irons" and the entrance to the Mendota Canal and Mendota Lighthouse. South point is in the distance. I walk that beach every day--sometimes more than once a day--when we are vacationing at our summer cabin nearby. Ah--I'll be there soon.

By Finnish Troll, Lower MI on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 03:53 pm:

We have had some wicked, wicked weather come blowing in down here in the burbs of Dee-Troit. 70 to 80 mph winds, hail size of golf balls, torrential rains....many of the major freeways are under water where there are overpasses. Many homes in Dearborn have major flood damage and they expect more rain tonight and all this weekend. We're floating away here. May I send the rain down to Texas --Ms. Shelly/Yankee in Texas!!

By H from Oklahoma on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 03:55 pm:

Thanks I finally found the article. I am a trucker and I am coming to your area soon for a school visit and wondered about bringing the the old piece home but my time doesn't mesh with the auction.

By mel, WA on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 04:28 pm:

Bthecute1
I can't remember, it slammed my brain shut! It was actually worse than jumpin in the snow cuz there was nowhere to warm up!! Very refreshing...

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 04:39 pm:

Finnish Troll,
NO, NOT, NEGATIVE, FORGET IT! We sent all that rain your way cuz we didn't want it anymore! We'll have Hurricane Season soon enough and have to float our way out of that!

Before I moved here in 2001, I came to visit Houston in June when Hurricane Allsion had her little time of fame, and woke up with over a foot of H2O in the house. We had to be rescued and walked in 4 foot of water to get to higher ground. Nice huh? Can you imagine if all the rain was snow? Oh, yeah, I forgot Yoopers can relate to that! Holywha!

By Connie - Colorado on Friday, May 21, 2004 - 07:46 pm:

Can't decide where to vacation this year? Here's a quick comparison. If Lake Superior were compared to Yellowstone (where I just got back from) there would be signs every 100 feet or so on the shore and all along the canal in Houghton and Hancock warning you of the dangers and perils of cold water, hypothermia and drowning. Below it would be a sign warning of a $5000 fine for touching the water. There were signs all over northwest Wyoming warning of the dangers of bears, grizzlies, etc. with the $5K fine for approaching one of them. We only saw one bear in three days of solid searching. So I get to keep the $5K.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ on Saturday, May 22, 2004 - 12:59 pm:

Dick B.:
I was thinking that the Finns pronounce all vowels...

Well you got that part right, absolutely!
and Sauna was pronounced Sow oo na with the oo's pronounced as in boot?
Certainly not! The "a's" are of course pronunced like "a's", not like "ow"!
Thus: sauna: "sau-na", with the finnish "a" pronounced as in "arm" or "car" or "father", if perhaps a bit shorter, and the finnish "u" pronounced as in "bull"or "pull".

Incidentally, the "au" here is actually a dipthong - which in finnish may only occur in the first syllable (except those ending in -i, which can occur anywhere). Elsewhere, such vowel combinations are not dipthongs, as they belong to separate syllables!
There are actually two kinds of dipthongs. The first letter is slightly louder in the "falling" dipthongs (ai, ei, oi, ui, yi, äi, öi, au, eu, ou, ey, äy, öy, iu), while the second letter is slightly louder in the "rising" dipthongs (ie, uo, yö).
