Is it true? Did Z-Man really capture a shot of Hemingway? If I'm not mistaken, Hemingway used to frequent the U.P. for hunting and fishing, but since he's been gone since 1961, I'm pretty sure that isn't him. The Z-Man would have been just a boy in those days! :-) Whoever this gentleman is, he sure has the right idea for a great way to calm his spirit and let his thoughts wander. Nothing beats a day on the lake!

Good morning. This picture speaks volumes about the solitude and serenity of the UP. It is one of the things that draws me there time and time again---just left there yesterday!

By Brad of Canton Mi. on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 08:41 am:

Call to all us trolls...
What is your tie to the Copper Country???

By Down State Dave on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 08:53 am:

The gentleman in the boat, I think, has spent the early morning fishing and having cleaned his catch is now rowing across the lake to the little bait-n-beer store to pick up a quart of milk and some eggs. On the way home he will be caught in a rain squall off of Superior but that's OK, he's dressed for it. :>)

Thanks, Z-man, this picture reminds me of years and years of doing this very thing on Rice Lake. Brings back a lot of memories.

By DMH on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 08:56 am:

Thanks for the great pic's!It hard to believe that a few months ago there was snow. I wouldn't live anyway else in this country , but right here in the UP! Its a beautiful day here today

By DAS, MN on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 09:30 am:

Minor correction folks.
That's no lake, that's the Ontonagon River in the town of the same
name. The Escanaba & Lake Superior RR bridge can be seen in the
upper right (crosses the river to reach the mill).

By Liz Benson, Pocatello ID on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 09:31 am:

I remember sitting on the steps of the Eagle Harbor Store (Rudy and Mary's) as a child. At that time there was a phone in the store. Mary Hemmingway was visiting the little blue home that Ione Westlake lived in and still in that family I believe. Mary was a guest of the lady in that home (I can't remember her name). There was a phone call for Mary and I got to race up to the home to give the message to her. Boy that was big stuff!!! Later, as a college student, I went to the Big Hearted River near Newberry that was featured in one of his books. Again, memory fails me and I'm not even near 60 yet!

By Kate, CA on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 09:55 am:

Thanks Zman for another great photo. Always enjoy experiencing the "art" of your photographs. I'll be in the U.P. in a couple of weeks....photos like this make me wonder why I ever left.......(sighing deeply) Oh yeah, I remember now....it was because of a man!!! He lured me away!! :-)

By Yooper Joe, was GB, WI now Brighton, MI on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 10:05 am:

A beautiful day indeed. Anyone have any opinion about what is going on at Pictured Rocks about the recreational vehicle usage ban that is proposed. It was in the Press Argus down here on Monday and wanted to see if the Mining journal had anything on it.

By Rice Lake Gary on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 10:29 am:

Brad of Canton, Don't you ever work.... Hi Aunt Mary

By Lee, Mi. on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 10:34 am:

Heard that the Harbor Haus Restaurant in Copper Harbor is on fire. What a loss for the community.

By Ms. Katie, Il. on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 10:41 am:

Should have known it is a Z-Man photo...a piece of art. I'm putting myself into that scene and enjoying the peace and wonder. Ahhhhhhhh...Ms Katie

By JAD, Oskar, MI on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 10:50 am:

Is it true about the Harbor House?

By Pete Wi on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 10:52 am:

Lets hear it for rowboats, canoes, kayaks and sail boats.

By Bill, Ca. on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 10:56 am:

Is it true that the HARBOR HOUSE in Copper Harbor is on fire??????? What a loss that would be for all of us who dream all winter of returning to the Copper Country and visiting that restaurant.

By camwatcher on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 11:22 am:

An update on Harbor Haus please?

By kewgal on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 11:29 am:

There was a fire at the Harbor Haus this morning, the fire was in the walls, and it was contained! It started about 9:30 and the firemen already cleared the scene! So it can't be that bad!

By Jennifer, WI on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 11:32 am:

Thanks for the update kewgal!

It would break my heart to think that something happened to the Harbor Haus. My husband and I had our honeymoon at the "Crows Nest."

By Audrey, San Jose, CA on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 12:05 pm:

Good Morning from San Jose!
Another fire?? First the Bella Vista and now the Harbor Haus?? I stayed at the Bella Vista and had the BEST meal at the Harbor Haus! What's going on? Anybody, what's the status of these two places now, anyone know?
Kate, CA and Bill, CA - what part of CA are you from?

By murphysurf, Rochester Hills MI on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 02:05 pm:

I have a sign in my office that says:

A bad day at the lake
is better than a good day in the office!

What a beautiful picture

By bsb, sr on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 02:16 pm:

Let's hear it for fishing boats, pontoon boats, bowriders and cabin cruisers, boating is a fine recreation indeed.

By stinky and loud, MI on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 02:42 pm:

Indeed power boating is a wonderful way to disturb a tranquil morning on a peaceful lake and fill the air with noxious fumes! Let's hear it for the 2-stroke oil burning engine!

By Dave, Laurium on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 02:50 pm:

Heikki was going for his morning walk one day when he walked past Uno's house and saw a sign that said 'Boat For Sale'.
This confused Heikki because he knew that Uno didn't own a boat, so he finally decided to go in and ask Uno about it. "Hey Uno", said Heikki, "I saw da sign in your yard dat says 'Boat For Sale,' but ya ain't ever been fisun and don't even have a boat. All ya have is dat old John Deere tractor and combine".
Uno calmly replied, "Ya you betcha, and dere 'boat for sale'."

By Heberbay, Ohio on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 02:54 pm:

Seems like its the old timers who are often seen in rowboats. Could it be the fresh air and excercise is what's gets 'em to old timer status?

Great Photo!

By Eric, IL on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 03:11 pm:

Dave, Laurium
What did you shoot today? You know you are making alot of us jealous everytime we read you are heading to the course and we are sitting at work. Good for you though. I hope to be able to do the same thing some day. You know, get up in the morning and the only worry is will the first tee be open. Grip it and rip it. Just remember to keep the putts low.

By Dave, Laurium on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 03:18 pm:

We won't talk about my score today, let's just say I got a lot of good exercise..... whether I needed it or not. It was a great day for hittin the links though.

By cheryl mi on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 03:24 pm:

Good afternoon to all. This picture reminds me of an elderly man fishing on Rice Lake outside of Lake Linden. My son just told me that the fishermen's derby in Rice Lake is on June 6th. It is always a great family day. People go fishing early and try to win prizes for the biggest fish. Kids compete also. At the clubhouse they have food, raffles and races for the kids. You meet and see people who you probably havn't seen in a long time. We used to take our kids there years ago when they were young and win quite a few raffle prizes. They'd be so excited & us (Rick & I ) so embarassed! Had 7 kids( so our chances were pretty good)LOL Those were fun times.By the way, it's a great breezy 70 degree day here. Hi to Laura, love you!

By Rice Lake Gary on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 03:53 pm:

Rice Lake Fishin' Derby this year is June 13th

By Dave, Laurium on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 04:14 pm:

Keweenaw Lodge Black Fly Golf Tourny on June 27th. If the weather stays like this, the bugs shouldn't be too bad this year.

By Dave, Laurium on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 05:18 pm:

OOOPS! Keweenaw Black Fly Tourney is Thursday, MAY 27th, Sorry!!

By Tony / sylvan lake michigan on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 05:24 pm:

cant take it anymore heading up. Is the calumet golf course in shape? also where's the trout fishing going on... Have a house in Gay cant stay in the flats any longer..

By Dave, Laurium on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 06:00 pm:

Tony.....Calumet Golf Course is in great shape, greens are the best in years. The ground is a bit water saturated right now, what with all the snow we had this winter and the recent rains. Power carts have been used minimally, and with rain in the forcast, that will probably mean no carts for a little while yet.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 06:10 pm:

Hemingway's "Adventures of a Young Man" was filmed in Saxon. Anyone remember that.

Love the picture. I beat the old camera crow too earlier today and got posted on yesterday

By dave s Mad Wisc on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 06:46 pm:

you guys have to quit showing this nice country called the U.P....
don't you know all those trolls can get right over there by using that new bridge over that place where the fairies used to go?

it would be a shame to all of a sudden wake up and find a 5million dollar house right across that lake...and then all those jetski machines and of course those 30 foot long boats with the 500hp engines.

My dream is to move back there and die in peace and quiet...

By maijaMI on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 06:48 pm:

Dave, Laurium: keep the Heikki and Uno's coming!

By steve the flying troll on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 08:28 pm:

My "adjustment" to the "bad day" quote.

I like "A bad day flying.....can really be a bad day!"

That and "keep ALL your promises, good and bad, makes my life a little easier to negotiate.

Take care Yoopers..........see ya on the 4th....

By ywb/yooperwannabe/richmond on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 08:51 pm:

Steve "The flying Troll"
Do you have your own plane, or do you fly out of DTW? I hope to be up in Big Bay just after the 4th of July. In time the the great "Fire on the Bay" fireworks show!

By Mike, Michigan on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 09:01 pm:

Good Evening from Perry Michigan

By Denny Illinois on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 09:13 pm:

Good Evening from Illinois. Tomorrow at this time I hope to be sitting in a boat on our lake deep in the Ottawa National Forest. I don't think I'll sleep much tonight. Love the UP

By steve on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 09:21 pm:

YWB I fly out of DET in a Mooney M20J
known to all as the famous "201"
Lots of Angelflights.....lots of burgers....lots of rides to first timers who might get the bug...I also pick up and deliver planes for buyers who don't want to make the trip....You can get too emotionally involved and sometimes it is better to have someone un-involved just go and get it. Lost days work......free flying and a ticket....except for the TSA when you buy a last minute one way ticket with aviation gear, it could be worse..........but not much.........

By nancym.,wi. on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 09:22 pm:

Liz Benson-Is your maiden name Borman? Also, hi to my brother Ken in Manistee.

By Henry McGee, MI on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 09:46 pm:

Steve the Flying Troll: When you fly to Copper Country from Detroit, do you fly over Lake Michigan on a direct route, or do you stay closer to land in the event your Lycoming jettisons a piston rod?

By David on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 09:49 pm:

Good Evening From Dearborn,MI. I hope everything is ok at Harbor Haus. I always enjoy it when I visit!

Steve "The Flying Troll"
Oh the life to always be on the go!! Sure beats day in day out at the same place working with the same people. It would be nice to fly to the yoop, instead of the 8 hour carride.

By Dave, Laurium on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 10:04 pm:

According to latest news reports on the Harbor Haus fire, the damage was minimal and they plan to be open on schedule....but they may have more 'smoked' options on the menu for a short time....:>)

By dave s wisc on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 - 10:46 pm:

oh man..this is bad...now the trolls can fly..
I knew it would happen

By Sharyn on Thursday, May 20, 2004 - 07:37 am:

Wow...almost missed this picture as my days get busier here. AWESOME shot! 'tis my new wallpaper. Thanks so much for sharing.

By James Ludos-IL on Thursday, May 20, 2004 - 08:09 am:

I saw some pictures of the Harbor Haus awhile back and it sure doesn't look like I remember it back in the late '70's. I use to do some work off and on for the owner at that time, Fritz and his wife. He was always able to twist my arm into having a slice of the Black Forest Cherry torte or cake which ever you want to call it. Of course he didn't have to twist to hard.

Well I just finished my move from Los Gatos Ca.
to Joliet Il, just south of Chicago. I haven't been in the U.P. for about 23 years or so and I am looking forward to getting there this summer. I'm sure some things will surprise me when I see them. I hope to be able to add some updated photos to my gallery. All the ones there now are from the '70's and '80's when we lived in Eagle River.

I have enjoyed the site for sometime now and really like to go through the different gallerys that folks have set up. Maybe I'll get a chance to meet some of you for coffee when I'm there. Until then keep up the great work on your photos and this site as well. Thanks!!!

By Mike R. New Berlin, WI on Thursday, May 20, 2004 - 09:07 am:

Margaret in TX. I went to the pre-cut screening of Hemingway's "Adventures of a Young Man" at the Nordic Theatre in Marquette. It was for theatre owners in the U.P. before the movie was released. This was back in about 1961 or 62. Of course I was in high shcool then.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ on Thursday, May 20, 2004 - 05:56 pm:

Henry McGee, MI:

You asked Steve: "When you fly to Copper Country from Detroit, do you fly over Lake Michigan on a direct route, or do you stay closer to land..."

I'd be interested in hearing Steve's reply myself.

Several decades ago the preferred route across Lake Michigan to the Copper Country was at an altitude above 10,000 ft. (MSL) via the following route: Charlevoix (CVX ndb) -> Beaver Island (SJX ndb) -> Seul Choix Point (visual) -> (KISQ VOR), thus we were always within 10 nm (11.5 sm) from some kind of "land".

I guess you could say that was our "Seul Choix" (Sole Choice) !

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Thursday, May 20, 2004 - 06:08 pm:

Mike from New Berlin: We were both in high school. I remember the Saxon thing when Gran took me back up north for a visit from down below. Now here in TX I teach Hemingway.

By Helen, MI on Thursday, May 20, 2004 - 07:49 pm:

Awesome picture Zman as usual. Keep on taking better pictures......

By Still Steve on Thursday, May 20, 2004 - 09:28 pm:

Same route FR Nash.......nothing much changes except we cut the corner occasionally to go direct Manistique........(The Mooney is a great glider and at 12K or above, you have a 25 mile cone of survival below you which is skewed by wind.........
