Charlie at Pasty Central on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 07:53 am:

What a great window of opportunity here in the U.P. to do some exploring. The snow is almost gone and blackflies have not yet awoken (or whatever they do during the winter). Also visibility in the woods is at its best before the leaves arrive. Clyde Elmblad captured the feel of these pleasant days in this shot of the old bridge over Falls River near L'Anse.

Mary Drew has the day off, and I heard she and Jim may be travelling downstate. It's also a great time of year for driving across the U.P... after the hazards of snow, and before the bugs populate your windshield. If only it could always be the fourth week of April!

Beautiful. i'm so lucky to live in L'Anse.
What a great pic~thank you!

By danbury; germany on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 08:10 am:

Somehow I've got this thing for old, abandoned railroad grades, bridges, trains, whatsoever. Add a creek and woods and attract me even more.

By Chuck Belanger, Cheshire, England on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 08:22 am:

Nice pic. Glad to hear that the snow is finally going. Ship some over here!

By Bthecute1 on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 08:25 am:

You can almost feel the coolness of the water. and smell the sweet fragrance of spring.

By crusin'thebackroads on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 08:25 am:

then you would love Baraga & MQT county. there's lots of one lane bridges over cricks and creeks on the backroads here thru the woods. i love this place. i can't imagine living anywhere else!

Hey Brad, don't you ever work ??????????

By Bill still stuck in MN on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 08:38 am:

My brother Gordy and I used to trout fish up and down this river when I was at Tech. Sure miss the UP!

By Me on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 08:43 am:

Nice photo- Rice Lake Gary, where on Rice Lake?

By ShawnR, GR MI on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 08:48 am:

I wouldn't be so quick to say the snow is over. My daughter said she ran into snow in the U.P. yesterday going back to Tech. In any case, at this time of year, it is likely short-lived.

Neat picture! I love seeing the fast water at this time of year.

By Richard, IN on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 08:51 am:

Good morning,
I read the picture caption this morning and did a double-take. I know blackflies are miserable, but blackfiles must be very abrasive. : )

By Dave, Laurium on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 08:58 am:

Eagle River
This picture is of Eagle River Falls, taken last week during what was probably its peak runoff. A week earlier I was there standing in the middle of where the water is running. Make's me wonder how the new fishing season is going and where they are catching?? Where are the smelt running??

By Missin the UP from NJ on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 09:09 am:

WOWEEEE! Great pics!

By Chuck Belanger, Cheshire, England on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 09:14 am:

That Eagle River Falls pic reminds me when my friend Mike broke through the ice, sometime in early spring, at the top of the falls. We did some stupid things back then. He was fine, just a little wet and cold!

By Ralph, traped in Fl. on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 09:17 am:

Both GREAT pics. wish I was there

By Barb Nelson, Jacobsville, MI on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 09:19 am:

falls look real

By danbury on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 09:41 am:

Right, cruisin'. Of course, backroads are a must. Preferably not paved! Rumour has it there are two in my vicinity, but so far I've only found one!:)

By Kate, CA on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 10:19 am:

Looking at the bridge photo only makes me say "ahhhhhhhh". It's going to be 50 degrees hotter here today than in the U.P. Ugh!

By Ralph from Fl. on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 10:38 am:

Where is the Gundlach building at?

By Marsha, Genesee and Aura on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 11:02 am:

The Flint Journal said they're catching rainbow trout in the Falls River now. I bet the falls are beautiful down by that old park where the building is.

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 11:08 am:

I am wondering if just for ONE day, you could find an ugly picture that is a real turn off, and post it as the daily photo, just to give us people who aren't there a break from the homesickness this site gives us. (Of course, I don't know if there IS an ugly picture to be found up there!) Maybe just put a picture of dirt, or something. Let our hearts heal from being away from the UP! :)

By Dave,Laurium on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 11:12 am:

The building is (was) located at the NE corner of the canal side parking structure. The UPPCO building is directly across the parking lot and the Library Bar is kinda kiddie-corner across the parking lot.

By the urban escapees on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 11:20 am:

Good day to all. We are one of the fortunate ones who have moved back to the UP. We got here last week, had a sauna already, visited all the fast-flowing falls, ate pasties etc. We loved the snow we received yesterday, which melted quickly, and are loving the cold weather, and no bugs, although we know they'll be here. But that's a small price to pay for being able to come home, and be home to stay finally. Like the saying goes, "just do it" - WE DID! :>)

By jeff portland OR on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 11:41 am:

Good day fellow yoopers, great picture of the falls in eagle harbor, itis always a must to visit, beautiful area, record heat in the northwest 85 degrees today.

By cusin'thebackroads on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 11:54 am:

why does everybody keep talking about the bugs? they are not THAT bad ;)

I'll be coming Home this summer for 2 weeks and I know that its gonna be really hard to leave at the end of the vacation. I always tell myself that I'll get back to Michigan one of these days!

By IF on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 12:20 pm:

When I was a kid ,we often hiked along a trail near the Falls River. I've always dreamed of walking there again. There are so many beautiful spots along that river....I hope you take more pictures along the way. L'Anse is Special!!!

By John S, Howell, MI on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 12:49 pm:

My Dad worked in the Gundlach building for 30 years. Many memories of visiting him there. I always wished I'd work at a place that was right on the water (hasn't happened yet).
Sad to see the building destroyed.

By the urban escapees on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 12:51 pm:

At the risk of alot of folks thinking I'm crazy, I just have to say "Yippeee, it's snowing!" The bridge cam shows none, but up here on the hill it's coming down, flakes the size of dimes. Beautiful! Great pic of the day too.

Very nice Zman! I can hear the voice of waters.

Cup of coffee to enjoy while surfing the net $1.00
Being able to log into Pasty Central every morning to ease the homesickness.....Priceless!

By Tom Green Bay on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 01:25 pm:

Really appreciate the pictures and the chat on this site.
Didn't realize there were so many people who love the UP (CC in particular) so much.
I always feel at home as soon as I cross into the UP----no matter where that crossing might be.
Quite a few UPers here. Used to have an loose organization but it seems of have folded.

Does anydody remember 'Ten Foot Falls' between Phoenix and Eagle River? It was quite a popular swimming hole years ago:

By Phyllis, North Texas on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 02:40 pm:

Phyllis, North Texas, Our family just bought a golden retriever and we were trying to think of a name for her that will help us remember the U.P. everytime we use the name. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks for the people that reply.

To Bob, Brookings, OR. " Ditto" But I see that you abbriviate Oregon. I am from California and I always spell it out. Could it be that I grew up at a time when abbriviations were non-existent?

By Dave, Laurium on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 02:51 pm:

How about 'YOOP'...

By Mary Lou on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 02:53 pm:

Phyllis: consider "Chassell". We have a Scottish Terrier named Brimley...except he was named for Wilford Brimley (the oatmeal man) because of the bushy eyebrows and mustach...but, we learned that there is a Brimley, in the eastern part of the U.P. New puppies are so much fun! Congratulations!

By Louan-Elk Rapids MI on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 05:04 pm:

I think you could call the dog by a lot of town names but the thing that means "UP" to me is the "PASTY". Pasty, is a good name for a dog. Goldens are the perfect color, too. Here,Pasty. Good dog, Pasty. See,it fits. Have fun with your new baby.

By maijaMI on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 05:26 pm:

I got into a debate with someone downstate here about this, and am curious. When I say "blackflies" I mean the big housefly-looking ones which can take a chunk out and are very persistent. He said, "no, it's the 'no-see-ums'" which since I'm allergic to them and you can't feel them bite are more of a nuisance to me. Which are you folk referring to?

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 05:31 pm:

I think the chunk biting ones are deer flies, or horse flies. I hated those things!

By Carole on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 05:43 pm:

Our dog is named after Seney (Mi) and will be nine in August. She is part Beagle and hound and when she stretches she always reminds me of 'Seney Stretch'.

By Kevin K. Lodi, CA. on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 05:51 pm:

MaijaMI, Blackflies.....They are talking about the tiny "no-see-ums".

By mel, WA on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 06:00 pm:

I remember three different kinds of blackflies. The houseflies that are just annoying, the horse and deerflies that have Thanksgiving dinner and leave behind an enormous lump, and the biting/stinging ones that come before it rains. Aren't the no-see-ums a different kind of bug?

By Jen on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 06:02 pm:

Phyllis, here are my suggestions for a dog:
Sisu
MOJO (good one, crusin'thebackroads!)
Heikki (did I spell that right?)

Please let us know what you pick!

By UP dreamer stuck in NJ on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 06:05 pm:

For the Golden, I'm with Shelly in Texas, Copper would be perfect.

By J, chassell on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 06:12 pm:

I know a golden named Inga and sometimes they call her Ingadine (Engadine?)

By maijaMI on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 06:16 pm:

Thanks Shelly and Kevin. I think you're right, cause the no see ums do go away earlier and the big nasty ones are around later than what people have been saying.

I agree about Copper, too, although Pasty's pretty good. yes, please let us know what you choose!

Hey, Dave, Laurium: thanks again for yesterday's sauna joke. Had several people at work barking with laughter at the punch line. (no pun intended for the golden)

Clyde: do you have a pict of the slate river?

By in wI on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 06:21 pm:

How about miskwaubic it is the Ojibwa word for copper I believe..OK my spelling may be off a bit??

By Fran from Japan, MO on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 06:37 pm:

Phyllis,

We have two Newfies, one named Quincy and the other Ripley. My neighbor suggested Medora with a call name of Dory and I really thought that was a good name for a big ol' dog too.

Quincy sure shares our love of Lake Superior and the UP. Ripley will be making her first trip in May as she is only 11 weeks old.

Next time I'm looking for a name I know who to ask!

By Buggie on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 06:41 pm:

There are Black Flies,No See Ums, Deer Flies, Horse Flies, Fish Flies, Stable Flies, House Flies, Snow Fleas, Mosquitos and now the "Snow Flies". Too many more to mention including Deer Ticks, Wood Ticks. Just relax and enjoy and get some "Deet".

By mel, WA on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 06:43 pm:

Definately Bug DOPE eh!

By Jim Copper Country on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 09:05 pm:

re today's Falls falls pix....the Falls River has five sets of falls within a couple miles of its mouth, and these (pix) don't seem to have a real designated name (??), contrary to the other four...some refer to them as "Railroad Falls" (??) with the rr bridge so prominent; CN RR now owns the rail line...up til recently 'twas WC RR..before that SOO Line, and originally DSS&A....All in all, these are probably one of Michigan's most photographed waterfalls, so easily seen from the car window on US 41 (and, most likely Michigan's most pictured rr bridge, too)

Usually, when I vacation somewhere other than the U.P., I return home feeling I've wasted my scarce vacation days. Thanks DH. Lovely shot.

And thanks Clyde very much for the link. Special place, the Slate, for me.

Golden name: I voted for Copper or Pasty, but, hey, Quincy and Ripley are excellent as well. I'm actually leaning toward Quincy: very good name for a lovely female golden.

Thanks for asking! Made a very interesting dialogue, as did the comments about gas prices. I love hearing from others all around the country/world.

Dog names: how about Bailey (as in Lake Bailey), Aurora (as in Borealis), Lucky (as in lucky to be there!), Bear, Moose, Agate, Porter (Porter's Island), Cliff or Clark (as in the mines), Fanny (Lake Fanny Hooe), Esrey, Hebard, Hiawatha, Fitzgerald (as in Edmund), Chip (from Chippewa), Yellow Dog, like the river (sorry, pretty lame!), Cal (Calumet), or Mac (Mackinac)?

I thought of Copper right away, as did everyone else!
