Mary Drew, back up north on Monday, March 8, 2004 - 06:03 am:

Winter in the Copper Country is a season where the farmers and ranchers get a bit of a rest. Paul Roberts shows us a peaceful scene, down on the farm. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the U.P. farmers and ranchers don't have any chores during the winter. All I'm saying is that there are fewer of them with no planting or haymaking. There are still the herds to feed, the pigs to slop... oh yes, plenty to keep them busy.

Well, folks, today marks the last day on the road for Jim and I. It's been a wonderful time for us on vacation. Thanks for all the good wishes, invitations, etc., from all. It has also been a good test for the Pasty.net Nationwide Dial-in. Anyone traveling and wanting to stay in touch with home, should consider signing up. There was NEVER a time during the three weeks we were away, that I couldn't get connected... now that's good service!

By UP_gal on Monday, March 8, 2004 - 06:11 am:

Welcome back Mary..so enjoyed hearing about your trip.
Lovely scene in today's pic. You're right, still plenty of chores which are none too easy with traipsing through the snow and keeping buildings open.

Anyone able to give us an update on George Hite?

By ron on Monday, March 8, 2004 - 08:43 am:

or an update for George in Milwaukee?

By Michele @ the Suomi : on Monday, March 8, 2004 - 09:10 am:

Ditto Mary, welcome home, and I too can say that the Pasty Service is #1 in my book!!! I haven't traveled with it, but as a home ISP-- and discussing with others who have different ISP my service is BY FAR the best. Keep up the good work, Charlie, and all the crew at Pasty.Net!

By Paul, Lake Linden on Monday, March 8, 2004 - 09:17 am:

Just a note for any interested in buying a farm...the farm in this picture is for sale...seriously. If you want more information contact Gerry Varius at Keewenaw Real Estate. The number is 906 296 9908. You can also contacy Sherry Giacoletto at 906 296 0343 or email her at snowgo@pasty.com

By Kate, CA on Monday, March 8, 2004 - 09:46 am:

Didn't realize Pasty.net was in the business of real estate? ;-)

Gee, those blueberries look good.....yum.

By jlw, MI on Monday, March 8, 2004 - 09:54 am:

Beautiful photo! Reminds me of my youth growing up in Iowa--without as much snow. A great place to grow up, but having lived in the Keweenaw year round, now, for almost 30 years, I can't imagine leaving this wonderful area!

By rob in dc on Monday, March 8, 2004 - 10:05 am:

Just checked out the web cams. So much for the clear water at Copper Harbor that someone noted last week!

argumentative message removed

By U.P. native on Monday, March 8, 2004 - 10:32 am:

I believe the smiley face at the end of Kate's note was clearly indicating an attemt at some humor.

By JoAnne, Washington state on Monday, March 8, 2004 - 10:43 am:

I'm with TLM, wondering if anyone knows how George Hite fared with his recent heart surgery. Please, if anyone knows, do post so we can rest easy that he's o.k.?? Thanks!

By Yoop. on Monday, March 8, 2004 - 12:46 pm:

Are those snow clouds rolling in? my favorite memory as a yooper child was riding on the hay bales as my grandpa was making hay, until one day a snake popped its head through a bale near my hand then disappeared just as fast.. that ended my hale baling days.. i then started exploring the woods and taking pictures of nature,(still a hobby.)
We're up on the U.P. Eh???

Jim B:
Someone who lives in Milwaukee is criticizing California?? Now that is funny! Glad to see that everyone is in a good mood this morning. Can you just feel the love? Jim, you seem to have lost your sense of humor. I'm sure it was just a momentary thing, but you should probably lighten up on the coffee just a little... (by the way Jim, the emoticon ;) is a winking smile,is means this is a joke...)

By Ms. Katie, temp. Texan on Monday, March 8, 2004 - 02:27 pm:

Blueberry sky !!! Perfect word. Beautiful snow scene, especiallly from here in Texas. I got a little testy myself last week. Tied down in an R.V. with a bored hubby and 2 sassy cats. At least you can use up energy plowin' thru the snow. Welcome back, Mary. Enjoyed your trip second hand. Plus...I've learned a new 'puter symbol ;) cute.Hang on to your sense of humor, spring IS coming.

By JRH, MI on Monday, March 8, 2004 - 02:35 pm:

Nice picture. It would be nice to know if the images being posted are film or digital.

By Kate, CA on Monday, March 8, 2004 - 02:36 pm:

...Jim B? Didn't you see the wink? It was a joke.....Dave,(and others) thanks for being able to see the humor. Sorry, Jim, I am returning to the U.P. this summer. Want to meet for some refreshments? I'll even buy ya a pasty! Native born Yoopers living elsewhere rarely get the U.P. out of their blood. Circumstances may take us elsewhere, but the U.P. always feels like home.

By Ms. Katie on Monday, March 8, 2004 - 02:37 pm:

P.S....I forgot to mention that it was raining cats & dogs last week! In reference to the hubby, & sassy cats :)

By Kevin K , Lodi, CA on Monday, March 8, 2004 - 02:57 pm:

Kate CA.,
You tell em! ;)

By Jim B- Downtown Milwaukee on Monday, March 8, 2004 - 03:05 pm:

TO KATE IN CAL.... I'M SORRY. APOLOGIES ARE IN ORDER!!! I MISSED THE WINK IN YOUR MESSAGE.

JIM

By Carole on Monday, March 8, 2004 - 03:20 pm:

Re: George Hite. Some readers at John Dee's site are also inquiring about George. According to the last journal George wrote he thought he might be released today if all went well. Sure hope so, we all miss him and wish him speedy recovery.

By Therese from just below the bridge on Monday, March 8, 2004 - 05:03 pm:

A beautiful picture! I think that sky color is .. blue? It's been a while.... I found another web site that might interest people, a daily astronomical photo. Today's is of the recent conjunction of the crescent moon and Venus (two weeks ago), although in the photo it looks more like a full moon which is impossible as Venus and a full moon are always at opposite ends of the sky. Nevertheless a haunting photo. http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html

By Audrey, San Jose, CA on Monday, March 8, 2004 - 06:39 pm:

Kate... where in CA are you? (just curious)

By Happy yooper on Monday, March 8, 2004 - 06:41 pm:

I relaize this post is not Keweenaw-related, but these
are something we all should know, especially since we
are not face-to-face with one another.

Therese: Just looked at that astronomy site. Thats a cool Picture. Thanks for the tip.

By Cousin Jackson on Monday, March 8, 2004 - 08:12 pm:

Tony,
UNless my ring has been knocked out of alignment, my guess is that it says:
DRINK OVALTINE

On the other hand, could be it is about the rash of rants related to the pictures that appear here. Looks like this message board is supported by the Discuss program and you can use colors as well as a host of other tools to get a message across.K

By bobby, VA on Monday, March 8, 2004 - 08:37 pm:

Therese from just below the bridge,

The site you mention is authored by Robert Nemiroff from MTU. It is a great site with many Hubble Space Telescope pics, etc. They have an archive going back years and links to other cool stuff.

From APOD you can go to MTU to H/H Bridge cam then to pasty.com (my usual route)

from George in Milw I am doing great.

By dmahoney, lower MI temporarily in MO on Monday, March 8, 2004 - 11:39 pm:

Mmmmm... pasties. Can't wait to get home from Kansas City on Wednesday, my pasty order should be waiting for me!!!

Random thought: I wonder how pasties go with Gates' extra hot BBQ sauce? (j/k, I am a ketchup w/my pasties kinda person!)

By ric, WI, WAY south of Milw on Tuesday, March 9, 2004 - 12:30 pm:

The Pasties at Kaleva with the Brown Gravy are AWESOME!

By Paul, Lake Linden on Tuesday, March 9, 2004 - 08:19 pm:

JRH,

The picture is digital. I took it from the roof of a second building on which I was clearing off snow.

By JRH,MI on Wednesday, March 10, 2004 - 10:10 am:

Paul,

Thank you for the information, the snow does keep one busy up here.

By Craig L-Mich on Wednesday, March 10, 2004 - 08:21 pm:

(Julie, WI) The picture is taken just outside of Lake Linden going towards Bootjack atop Gregorie Rd. I own the partially wooded property that is on the right side of the picture.

By Paul, Lake Linden on Wednesday, March 10, 2004 - 10:42 pm:

JRH,

You've got that right! But it's fun anyway. At least I enjoy it.

By JRH, MI on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 12:14 pm:

Paul,
I enjoy it also, I would rather blow snow than cut grass.

By Paul, Lake Linden on Saturday, March 13, 2004 - 10:18 am:

Julie, WI,

The farm is in Lake Linden on what used to be known as Giacoletto Road. It is now Gregorie Rd. Just thought I'd tell ya in case you were still wondering.
