Perhaps you've seen photos of the good folks at Still Waters, in various stages of making and baking the delicious pasties we ship all over the country. These three young ladies were introduced to U.P. pasties, by their Uncle Jeff Johnston. Jeff says they were a hit, so much so, that he's expected to bring them to family gatherings from now on!

Last week we played havoc with your diets with bakery, this week we invite you to satisfy your taste buds by ordering your ready made dinner today: 1 Pasty = 1 Complete Meal. Makes the perfect Valentine's Day gift, too :o)

Mary, where are these girls from? Looks nice and warm outside!

By Pat & Glenda on Tuesday, February 3, 2004 - 06:35 am:

Hope everyone in "Yooper Land" had a tremendous GROUNDHOG DAY. Our headquarters this year was at a cabin in Meeman-Shelby State Park.
If you've never bitten into a steaming groundhog cooked over a hickory wood fire, with just a pinch of salt and pepper,....well, you haven't missed a thing! Our band always ops for BBQ shoulders (chopped up for sandwiches, aka "ground hog") People also bring spaghetti, chili, cheese, deserts, quite a "feast day"
Part of the tradition is a fireworks display, followed by the burning of this years Christmas trees. This is the highlight of the day, these well seasoned trees almost explode, if the little gadgets crawling around Mars would have looked this way, we are sure that they could have seen!
We do miss the snow. Especially the grandkids. Twice we have been able to have Ground Hog Day in the U.P., and those years the snow was the highlight!
Candlemas, cross quarter day, indeed, so restless is man's intellect that were he to penetrate to the secret of Groundhog Day, the likelihood is that he would grow bored on the day after...

You just can't beat a pasty on a cold day. I've heard it's been quite cold the last few days. Believe it or not, about a week ago, I saw about 3 or 4 snowflakes flying around over here. The temps were in the low 30's and the conditions were just right. Or maybe I still have visions of the U.P. streaming through my head..... Have a great everyone!!!

By Finnlander's wife on Tuesday, February 3, 2004 - 07:52 am:

I'll stick with pasties for Groundhog Day...thanks anyway!

The pasty presenters this morning are cutie pies!

By John, Chicago on Tuesday, February 3, 2004 - 08:21 am:

No snow in the background, and sunny too! At least it tastes like the UP!

By Ray in Albuquerque on Tuesday, February 3, 2004 - 10:15 am:

I think the Arizona State Sweat shirt is a big clue. Could it be in the Phoenix area by chance??
Its not even that nice here in Albuquerque. We could be getting a little snow today.

By Steve in VA on Tuesday, February 3, 2004 - 10:55 am:

To Ray in Albuquerque - snow beats ice ANY day, which is what we're getting AGAIN (!) in the DC area...

By Dave of Mohawk on Tuesday, February 3, 2004 - 11:29 am:

The pasties look delicious but I certainly can't help but notice the three girls, they look like professional models. Great photo

By julie b., MI on Tuesday, February 3, 2004 - 11:34 am:

So good to hear from you, Yooper in Iraq! May our Lord watch over you and your buddies and keep you all safe.

By snowed in, painesdale on Tuesday, February 3, 2004 - 01:23 pm:

Ahh it appears as if one (or more) of them could not resist a nibble of said tasty morsel.

By bob piff, hoton on Tuesday, February 3, 2004 - 01:24 pm:

Indeed, who could resist? I am suprised they lasted long enough to pose for a picture.

By Jennifer, WI on Tuesday, February 3, 2004 - 01:49 pm:

I will be visiting the Houghton/Hancock area in a few weeks. Is there a place in town where I can rent cross county skis? I can't wait to hit the Tech Trails (I haven't done that in years) Thanks!

By Jeff Johnston, Eugene, Oregon on Tuesday, February 3, 2004 - 02:18 pm:

The photo was shot near Portland, Oregon,
which explains the relatively mellow weather
outside the window. I've spent a bunch of time
in the UP for business and pleasure, and
ordered some pasties in time for a Christmas
delivery, since most of my family had never
had them. My Mom grew up in Chicago and
had spent time in the UP as a girl at a church
camp, but I don't know the details.

The two in the photo are the last ones from the
meal, and were the only ones that sat still long
enough to be photographed.

Now they're hooked ...

And the girls are my nieces, not pro models,
although they ARE quite beautiful.

Notice the hummingbird feeder hanging off the roof.

By D.Hiltunen -Smoky Mountains TN. on Tuesday, February 3, 2004 - 03:40 pm:

Very altra-brite smiles.Pasties make strong teeth.Has anyone every been told that they have pasty breath?

By CK in Chassell on Tuesday, February 3, 2004 - 03:41 pm:

Jennifer in WI:

You can rent skis at Downwind Sports in downtown Houghton. You might want to call ahead of time and make a reservation: 482-2500.

Cross Country Sports in Calumet also rents skis: 337-4520.

By Downstate Dave on Tuesday, February 3, 2004 - 04:11 pm:

Note to D.Hiltunen --- I think the altra-brite smiles are probably caused by the rutabagas in the pasties! Probably work better than those dental strips they advertise or the tooth paste with whiteners. Yeah, that's it --- pasties promote whiter teeth! Or maybe just pasty breath --- which is not a bad thing you understand. Just different. :>)

By greg, portland, or on Tuesday, February 3, 2004 - 05:19 pm:

thought it looked like portland. the green (and moss) in the background disqualifies phoenix right away. portland reminds me of houghton/hancock in ways. miss the big lakes though, especially gitchee gumee.

By Ken and Mimi from da UP on Tuesday, February 3, 2004 - 10:40 pm:

Mimi and I have 'pasty breath' tonight. We made a pie pan full of pasty, like minun äiti (my mother) used to do. Mom never made individual pasties, always in a 9" pie pan. They were real pasty pies. Of course, just a little oleo and a skinny drizzle of catsup (or ketchup, Fran,GA) on my serving. Mmmm Mmmm GOOD!! Hyviin Pirakka!!

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Wednesday, February 4, 2004 - 07:23 am:

Tuesday's shot reminded me of the first pair to appear on the Pasty Cam in such a pose, Scott and Becca from Colorado. That was almost half a lifetime ago for Becca, who's smiling face has greeted visitors on our home page for the last six years.

By Carol N. - lower penninsula on Friday, February 6, 2004 - 04:00 pm:

Are you sure these taste like the "real" pasties mother used to make? There are too many that barely resemble them in taste!

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Friday, February 6, 2004 - 10:44 pm:

Carol,

Personally, I've never had a Pasty Central pasty I didn't love. But that's just me... So how about some objective statistical evidence of what people think of the taste of our pasties?

While we have some folks who have ordered almost every month for several years, there are about 8,000 families who re-ordered on an average of 5 times. Whenever a lot of new people discover Pasty Central, (for example, through the recent NEWSWEEK article), there is a sudden burst of first-time customers. But then the baking demands seem to continue at the new higher level, as re-orders appear.

So that says something about how "real" the taste is. In my experience I have found an interesting principle: You may attract people to try a product or service through promotion, but they will continue to use your product or service only if you continue to deliver what they value. Enough people value what they receive from Pasty Central and Pasty.NET, that it has generated about 12 extra jobs in the local economy to fulfill that demand.

And you have our pledge that we'll do our best to deliver quality, genuine U.P. style pasties, and fast, reliable Internet access, as long as these are things which people continue to value.
