These fine feathered friends were caught in the lens of Derik Little, one of the newest additions to the Pasty Cam Guest Gallery I hesitate to mention these beautiful creatures by name, for fear of opening a "hunting" can of worms (pun intended!). They truly do look like those three famous monkeys to me... see no evil (the middle dove is hiding), hear no evil (far right dove looks like he could be hiding his ears) and speak no evil (dove on the right has his beak tucked down). Now that you mention birds having ears, where are they anyway?

Even Better Morning
Second post of the day

By Lowell Mo. on Friday, January 23, 2004 - 04:53 am:

Mary Doesn't the birds have ears in back of their eyes under the feathers??
Cold down here again but no snow. maybe this weekend they are predicting showers and snow flurries and here that can mean anything from a skiff of snow to maybe a few feet. Typical Missouri. Not at all like the U.P. Up there when it snows it snows no fooling around.

By Troll in Eagle Harbor on Friday, January 23, 2004 - 07:25 am:

At least the wind got to where ever it was heading!!!Hopefully I'll be able to get caught up on my plowing and roof shoveling today.Any one know what the latest numbers are for this winters snow fall are?I 'm getting to where I can feel every inch I've moved....

By Marsha, Genesee and Aura on Friday, January 23, 2004 - 08:16 am:

Check out Jeffrey Kalember's new gallery page. He has some good and interesting shots there. It's cold down here in Genesee, near Flint, and we have more snow than usual. Nice! I was surprised with gas prices of $1.73 per gallon this morning. Have a good day all!

By Lorelei, Mi on Friday, January 23, 2004 - 08:19 am:

145 inches counted in Painesdale. Thats total snowfall.

By dlp - Painesdale on Friday, January 23, 2004 - 08:34 am:

Add today's measurement of 5.5" to that 145 inches in Painesdale. Makes for a total of 150 inches, we are halfway to our 300 inch mark. Between the three of us wading through all that snow to the weather station to measure it, I think we will hit it again, no problem!!!

By Yooper in Indiana on Friday, January 23, 2004 - 09:05 am:

troll in eagle harbor: How be the weather there,,,how much snow in the yards, imagine alot where the local snow plower has pushed it. should be good snowmobiling at this time based on what I hear. I will be up in the Harbor for our annual riding weekend in a month or so.

By Jean, West Texas on Friday, January 23, 2004 - 09:20 am:

Good morning from West Texas. It sure looks to be a cold one in the UP. Here in Texas we are in the 40's with expected highs in the 60's...mild winter this year and finally, a little rain in the forecast. I hesitate to say I am envious of the weather up there with such blistering wind chills but am enjoying the snowy scenes:) Mary, those birds sure look well nourished!!

By Jeff K on Friday, January 23, 2004 - 10:10 am:

Thanks for the plug Marsha !
Taking UP pictures has turned into a nice hobby and I love seeing all the other pictures in all the galleries. Dan U and Steve B have been great inspirations. Over 100 inches of snow so far here in Gaylord and we are in the LP !!

By Paul, Webberville Troll on Friday, January 23, 2004 - 10:40 am:

Hey Eagle Harbor Troll, that wind passed through Leroy Township too. Gone for now though. Hard to imagine 150" of snow and its still January. Karen from Plymouth, we visited your ice sculpture show last weekend. Great show even with the cutback. We ate breakfast at Rebecca's in Northville and then later in tha day had dessert at the Guerney Farms Dairy on Novi Road.

By Mary Ann, WY on Friday, January 23, 2004 - 10:54 am:

Looks like these little guys can't wait for spring, like me. Brrrr! We haven't had snow for over 3 weeks, but think I would rather have that then the cold weather we are having now. The temps the last several week have been zero or less in the morn. It is hard to get out and go to work.

By David S. - CA on Friday, January 23, 2004 - 11:19 am:

I once heard a story about someone feeling sorry for the birds outside the window in freezing cold weather. They appear to be cold when actually the temperature under the wing is about 100 degrees. Not sure how true, but the source seemed genuine.

By Pat Mi. on Friday, January 23, 2004 - 11:34 am:

What about their feet?

LOVE THIS PIC. I'D LIKE TO KNOW WHAT FOCAL LENGHT LENS IT WAS TAKEN WITH. HEY MARY ANN FROM WY., ARE YOU RELATED TO MY WIFE? HER NAME IS MARY ANN TOO.

By PETE WI on Friday, January 23, 2004 - 12:17 pm:

HI JEAN, THE BIRDS LOOK LIKE THAT BECAUSE THEY HAVE THEIR FEATHERS ALL FLUFFED UP TO HELP STAY WARM. WE ACTUALLY HAVE ENOUGH SNOW HERE TO SKI. FIRST TIME IN ABOUT THREE YEARS AND I COME DOWN WITH THE FLUE. HOPE TO GET OUT THIS WEEKEND THOUGH.

By scooper, up on Friday, January 23, 2004 - 01:27 pm:

It seams like they could'nt help but get cold. There fethers must be good insalation.

By Pete's daughter, West Texas on Friday, January 23, 2004 - 01:58 pm:

Hey, Pete, That is why you and Mary Ann should ALWAYS get your flu shot:) Next year, maybe...you will be hounded.

By Mary Lou on Friday, January 23, 2004 - 02:14 pm:

Will the person who is playing the Heikkie Lunta "Snowdance Song" please STOP it?? Enough already!!

By Lowell Mo. on Friday, January 23, 2004 - 03:27 pm:

Someone asked about the feet on the birds getting cold from what I've read they do not have nerves in their feet so don't feel the cold there. Also the ones in the picture have their feathers fluffed up which also helps them to retain their body heat. I have them come into my feeder here sometimes have a flock of them. Fun to watch but a very wary bird. they will land on the street and then walk into the feed.

Pikku Lintu, laulaa, laulaa.

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central on Friday, January 23, 2004 - 04:21 pm:

Lowell, MO was the only one to say where bird's ears are located. As I was writing the notes to go with these fine feathered friends...I arrived at the "hear no evil", and admit, I was stumped as to where bird's ears are!
That's the end of today's Pasty lessonbig exclamation! :->

By ruth on Friday, January 23, 2004 - 06:22 pm:

Last year someone posted a website so we could see how much of the Lake was frozen over. Does anyone have that? Once the Lake freezes over, the snow slows, but it REALLY gets cold.

By A², Royal Oak, MI on Friday, January 23, 2004 - 07:02 pm:

Mary Drew, thanks for your link to bird ears. It was a nice reference for families with inquisitive children as well as for some of us older folks who like to learn new stuff. Every day I find something special on the Pasty website. Thanks and best wishes to all. A²

Hei, Marsha/Genesee, We played (Kilpela and Friends) at the National Ski Hall of Fame yesterday in Ishpeming. The gas in Ishpeming was $1.519. So we filled up. Escanaba's gas is $1.589, and different places are higher. In this cold weather my birdfeeders need refilling a couple times a day. Mostly finches, sparrows, chickadees, nuthatches and woodpeckers. Oh yes, and those mourning doves. Not to mention the darn squirrels, too. And rabbits. But my favorite would be the chickadees.

By big fella, michigan on Friday, January 23, 2004 - 10:42 pm:

lots of small deer this year, and having to feed only two gallons at a time makes for many trips outside to feed about 50 lbs. per day.they come at five oclock and stay all nite and then go back to the fisher lot for the nites. hope the little ones make it thru the winter

By tom tc mich on Friday, January 23, 2004 - 11:03 pm:

Be careful, those deer have been known to eat birds, and fish, when they are real hungry.

By Arcadian on Saturday, January 24, 2004 - 12:55 am:

Has chronic wasting disease shown up in the UP's
whitetail population yet?

By big fella calumet, mich. on Saturday, January 24, 2004 - 09:15 am:

no chronic wasting shown up so far

By Kate, CA on Saturday, January 24, 2004 - 11:09 am:

Take good care of those little doves...help 'em out if you need too! We have a plethora of beautiful red breasted robins in my neck of the woods. Think they all came here to escape the chill of the frozen north. I'll let you know when they leave!A little chilly today in our coastal area....Might have to make pasties for dinner!

Hey dere, PETE WI:
