We pause at the end of each month to remember friends now gone:

Luke Squires
Vi Bjorn
Jack Bastian
Donald Sohlden

...and you are welcome to add names of others in memory.

Even as we prepare today's photo, the radio tells of more Americans and citizens of other countries who have died in the conflict in the Middle East. Our thoughts are with the families of those who have lost loved ones, and our prayers are for peace.

Rudy Sutinen passed away last week at the age of 86. He graduated from Calumet High School in 1935 and later attended Michigan Technological University. He was captain of the Michigan Tech basketball team and a member of the track and field team. After receiving his degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1939, he joined his father as partner in the Family Shoe Store in Calumet, a business which served several generations of local residents for over 60 years. He gave generously of his time and talent to make Calumet a great place for many years, and always had a smile on his face for everyone he met, whether he knew them or not. He was a very nice man.

By Greta, Milwaukee on Sunday, November 30, 2003 - 03:09 pm:

Tony Canadeo - classic Packer. Also, I would like to remember my grandmother, Hildur Blomquist, who passed away in November of 1963. I look up to her as a roll model still. Widowed after only 6 yrs of marriage, she raised 3 fine children during the Depression. When the situation arose making me a single mother, I looked to her example and figured if she could do it with 3 during a hard time, I could certainly and just as stubbornly, accomplish the same with only one child. My son is now 27 and a fine upstanding young man. I would like to think of my Grandma Hildur as helping me through the parenting problems. I am also carrying on her music legacy and am a 3rd generation church organist.

By JJG, New Mexico on Thursday, December 4, 2003 - 02:07 am:

I would like to remember a great man. A great Airman that as an officer cared a lotfor his troops and treated enlisted and officers as equals, of course with respect to their positions. A man that loved his wife and only son. A man that spoke very highly of his mother and step-father and his sister. A pilot that died doing what he loved the most about his career, fly. I remember that whenever he had too much paperwork to do he would get upset because it took time away from his time of being in the air. But now he's up above looking down on his family and friends. He's in a better place than us, and all I have to say is that it was a pleasure knowing him. I loved this man like I will never love anyone else ever since I met him in 1997 at RAFM, UK and continued being stationed together at KAFB, NM. May he rest in peace, and may his wife find enough strength in God to deal with such a loss. This man is Steven Plumhoff, a recently promoted to Major in the United States Air Force. Rest in peace Plummer! At least those who know you well know that you died doing what you love doing the best. And I know that you died defending your US Military, your Core Values, our Country, our Families, our lives. God bless you!!! And thank you!

By To: ARVID RAASIO From: YOUR GREAT GRAND DAUGHTER, NICHELLE on Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - 06:44 pm:

Im not from the U.P. but my great grandfather Arvid Raasio was. I havent seen or spoke to him since my grandma Betty died in 1994. I guess there were conflicts of interest so to speak having to do with his daughter Laverne. I dont know all details, I was only 13. I was doing extensive internet research today trying to see if my great grandfather was still alive, and after hours of searching for his death rec. and obit. (without a credit card it was hard) I found out that he passed just 20 days after the birth of my daughter Cheyenne. I have missed him very much. He and grandma Betty raised me and did such a wonderful job. I was lucky. I didnt realize it then and I am sorry I didnt. Grandpa Arvid and grandma Betty...I love and miss you both and Im sorry for all the trouble I caused as a child. I was a bad-•••, snatty, spoiled little brat and im sorry for that. Ive felt terrible for years and wanted nothing more in my life then to have had the chance to apologize to you both, but it's too late. You guys did everything you could to raise me right and I thank you. I am now 23, sucessful, married, have 2 kids, and going to college. Im looking into law schools as we speak. It is my dream to become an attorney someday soon. Thank you for all you have done and Im sorry, Gramps, that things went the way they did. Just know Ive loved you no matter what.
