About last night... here's a before and after. Lake effect snow along Superior can be pretty unpredictable, but it finally hit us.

If you're driving anywhere across the U.P. this weekend, allow plenty of extra time and watch for gusting winds.

By Bob Roysdon Arizona on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 08:26 am:

Boy does that bring back the good old days when there was not a care in the world.Looks like the first of a lot to come.
I enjoy the pics and look forward to seeing the snow get deeper.Keep the pics coming..Bob

By Lily, MI on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 08:35 am:

Preserve the adverbs! 'Drive safely!'

By Steve Racine Wi on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 08:53 am:

Is the second picture a recent one? It can't be

By UPgal on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 09:15 am:

Sure looks like the roads this morning. A few inches of white arrived overnight. A few cars in the ditch this AM.

By Missin the UP from NJ on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 09:23 am:

In that first picture the little girl looks at the camera as if to say, "I put my snow suit on for this?"! Then WHAM! the lake effects!
It's always surprising how quickly things can go from fine to dangerous where the weather's concerned. All you Yooper's take care.
I'm hoping we have enough snow for snowshoeing this winter. We've had some HUGE storms over the years but only every 4 to 6 years. The years between the big snows usually what snow we get melts back with winter rains (yuck).

By Copper Country Dee on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 09:43 am:

Hey Bob, in sunny, warm Arizona, I would look forward to snow getting deeper, too, if I didn't live in the middle of the Copper Country. You can be sure I won't be singing, "Let It Snow" anytime soon....maybe John Denver's "Sunshine".

By Mike on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 10:20 am:

How's the State doin' with taking care of the M and US numbered roads in Houghton County ???

By YOOPER IN VEGAS on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 10:42 am:

GLAD TO SEE YOU ARE GETTING SNOW. I HOPE YOU GET A LOT MORE.

By Carole on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 10:46 am:

Is the second picture taken along M28 out of Shingleton heading towards Munising? Sure looks like it.

By Sharyn on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 10:49 am:

Okay, Carole, I'm dying of curiosity. To me that looks like any number of roads in the UP, all I see is the snow, what about it makes you think its M28 out of Shingleton? I will be so impressed if you are right! Ü

By Fran,ga on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 11:00 am:

Yaay snow!!! The little one is so cute, all ready to play in the snow in her nice warm snow suit.I never could figure why they don't sell snowsuits in this area it can get pretty cold here. Kids just don't go out on cold days. Well ya'll (oops) stay safe and warm.

By Deb, Yooper Girl in Lower Michigan on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 11:01 am:

The second picture looks a bit like US-41 between Hancock and Calumet.

By yooper in indiana on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 11:03 am:

looks like the 2nd pic could be on US41 going towards Osceola from Oneco, before you get to the state police post,,,,

By SDC, Ferndale, MI on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 11:08 am:

Not to take away from the snow, but, does anyone know where I could get a copy of the 100 anniversary book about Dollar Bay?? I have a lot of family history under my belt I need to obtain.

Thank you.

By Amy, Novi, MI on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 11:40 am:

Is the little girl Roger and Laura Kangas' daughter? I'm wondering because I saw that the photo was taken by Roger Kangas, and Laura (formerly Hermanson) is my cousin. If it is, Laura - email me...I would love to hear from you!

By Debbie, Durand, Il. on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 11:47 am:

The snow scene reminds me of a Christmas carol:
Oh the weather outside is frightful
But the fire is so delightful
And since we've no place to go
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

By fy on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 11:52 am:

I would agree with Carole.
Left side of road looks too open to be US41, looks like the railroad tracks/snowmobile trail near Shingleton.

By k2, Trollville on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 12:36 pm:

My pick for the snow picture is US41, heading towards Hancock, just past the State Police post and Dan Riutta's store.

By liz Benson, Idaho on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 12:47 pm:

My pick is Charlie driving to work this morning.

By Mike-Transplanted Yooper-Redford,Mi. on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 12:47 pm:

It's making me HOMESICK!!!!

By SuzieQ, Berkeley, IL on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 12:50 pm:

I don't know where the pic was taken, but it doesn't look like the kinda snow where headlights never help much, and your driving into the tunnel of endless blizzard weather. I hate that "tunnel" feeling when driving in snow. My suggestion is stay home with the fireplace going, and a hot toddy in hand!

By Debbie - U.P. on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 12:55 pm:

I don't think the pic is a current one. The snowbanks are way too high! If the area would have gotten that much snow overnight, we would have heard about it on the Dick Storm News from WOLF radio. It has to be one from someone's archives!!

By Bob Roysdon Arizona on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 02:19 pm:

I think I know where the picture was taken,Its south of Flagstaff about 10 miles.Or maybe not. They all look alike.
I miss living there in the snow belt. The only thing I don't like is that the winters last to long. Its still the prettiest state we have..Bob

By Sharyn on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 02:22 pm:

With all these guesses, I'm bound to be impressed with somebody! LOL Amy ~ you can see more of Rogers pictures in the guest gallery.

By L in LL on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 02:29 pm:

I'd bet ya it is any place between Phoenix and and before Calumet. Charlie was probably on his way to work when he took it. What do I win?

By Rachel, Little Betsy on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 02:30 pm:

I think this looks like US-41 between Mohawk and Copper Harbor.

By L in LL on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 02:45 pm:

I also doubt this was taken today. I live less than a half hour from where I think this was taken and I only got 2 inches. Looks as though this was last year after a few good snowfalls. I still think I am right!

By ed on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 03:36 pm:

My guess, M-28 between Seney & Shingleton last January.

By Kevin K. Lodi, Ca. on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 03:48 pm:

Funny how when you live in an area that get's the white stuff, you hate it. But move some place where it doesn't snow, and see how much you miss it.Nice thing about the Central Valley here in California, I can head to the Sierra's and be in snow in an hour's time, or head to the coast and be at the ocean in an hour and a half. Still, there's no place like home! Pictures like these make me homesick for Mich.

By Grizzly Adams, MI on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 03:52 pm:

US41 was pretty rough this morning between Calumet and Houghton and not so rough on M26. However, since the only digital camera Charlie has right now is the bridge cam (at least that was the case as of a week or so ago) chances are it wasn't taken by him. I perasonally don't know exactly where it is but I do know that it is in the Keewenaw and it's definelty US41 and it was taken this morning.

By Roger K. on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 04:52 pm:

Grizzly - you're snowing us! The second picture was definately NOT taken today on US41. However, the first picture was taken nearly two weeks ago, in my front yard.

By Missing the Yoop, not the snow on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 04:56 pm:

Well, the bottom pic says photo by Charlie Hopper, so if it wasn't today....when was it, Charlie? And I cast my vote for US-41 just past the State Police Post headed for Hancock as well, although it could also be by Three Lakes going toward Marquette. Since I haven't seen any of that landscape in a few years, it's all conjecture anyway...

By Nancy on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 06:58 pm:

Have the snows diminished recently? I remember being a kid and the snow covered the ground from November through late March.

Now rain washes it away too fast.

By DJB-UP on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 07:02 pm:

LET'S HEAR IT FOR SKIING--SKI --SKI--SKI-YIPEE!

By Sara, Phx, AZ on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 08:50 pm:

Lexi what's that white stuff? What a cutie!! Katie got to see snow in AZ last year at the opening of the new spring training ball parks here...threw a snowball:) Hugsss from your cousins in AZ! Hi Amy! Wow, been ages, eh?

By Mary Ann, WY on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 10:12 pm:

This photo looks like it is between Shingleton and Munising to me. I was just back for a visit to the UP a couple weeks ago, and looks like I had my trip planned right. I visited my hometown of Manistique, so was on Lake Michigan. One day I drove to Munising and Marquette, so I could see Lake Superior too. Lake Superior had some good waves. A wind surfer was having a good ride by Presque Isle. I found that the last several summers I have been missing living by the Great Lakes. The UP is a special place for me and always will be.

By Charlie in Eagle River on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 10:49 pm:

Grizzly, you're wrong on at least two counts: it's NOT US-41, and it wasn't taken this morning. To be honest, I don't recall where it was taken... but maybe somebody can help by identifying this location, which was taken shortly after:

b1107c
...and to zoom in a little on the sign and building:
b1107b

Where is it?
By Ms. Katie, Il on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 10:53 pm:

Can someone tell me how to order a calender from Pasty.com? Also would like some information whether there are other things avaiable to buy such as caps, t-shirts whatever with the pasty.com logo?? Thanks for any help.

By Steve Racine Wi on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 10:56 pm:

I'm with Debbie and Lin, this picture was not taken today. Looks good though. When was it taken?

By RogerK on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 11:02 pm:

Could it be Munising? According to the road sign, you were heading West on M28.

By K on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 11:05 pm:

It's Munising....definately

By John- Canton Mi on Friday, November 7, 2003 - 11:51 pm:

May Julie Cowling of Painesdale rest in peace.
A wonderful lady who died suddenly last week.
Will be greatly missed by her many friends.

By Luke S. - Chatham, MI on Saturday, November 8, 2003 - 12:53 am:

Those last two pictures are definitely Munising. I recognize that part of the town pretty well (not just that part, but ALL of Munising). Must've been one of those fierce U.P. storms, especially if it ends up closing M-28 between Munising and Harvey.

By Carole on Saturday, November 8, 2003 - 08:28 am:

This is definitely Munising. We spend 2 weeks up there in May and a week and half in September. ALways riding around in the area so am familiar with various landmarks. Still am convinced yesterdays picture was taken on M28 outside of Shingleton heading west, somewhere near the railroad tracks that cross the highway by a paper mill plant.

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central on Saturday, November 8, 2003 - 09:10 am:

Ms Katie, IL,
Check out today's notes here for a link to Pasty Gifts and the Calendar too!

By Dave , UP mich on Sunday, November 16, 2003 - 10:13 am:

What a difference in the UP it makes. Here Im from Marquette mother nature cannot make up her mind on which to have Rain/snow/ice/mild haha
We got hit with 2 snow storms so far but it had all melted away Im beging to like this lack of snow I hope it stays this way until Christmas.

Every year people are reminded by the police to take there time and drive slow. So Slow down!!

By fy on Friday, November 21, 2003 - 12:30 pm:

Carole you are right on, drove by the spot Nov 14th. About 3/4 mile east of the tracks, heading west, if not for the snow you might have been able to make out the RR crossing lights over the road.

By Daus, Munising, MI on Sunday, June 6, 2004 - 05:32 pm:

Anybody win? The picture is in Munising at the intersection of M-28 and Cherry Street. On the right you can just see the corner of the former ACRC building and straight ahead is the old Lincoln School.
