That's pretty cool. Sure looks like he/she has alot on his/her mind. Probably contemplating how in the world it's going to survive the impending winter.

I've been admiring this shot for a long time! If I was lucky enough to run across such a shot, I'm sure I wouldn't have my camera with me!

By Kate, CA on Friday, October 17, 2003 - 09:37 am:

Poor lil critter! Looks scared to death.....where's mommy? Anyone know what kind of owl this is? Amazing photograph! Talk about being in the right place at the right time WITH camera!!

By Michele Houghton on Friday, October 17, 2003 - 10:38 am:

WHAT A GREAT WOW!!!! Make this one a keeper on an upcoming calander. This is the reason the UP is such a GREAT place to be. Moments from what we need, and at the same time a short trip to nature's finest Gifts. Thank the Good Lord for what we have and the people around us!

By Vivian, TX on Friday, October 17, 2003 - 11:29 am:

This is the first time I've commented here. I've been looking at the pictures for several weeks and enjoying them. Was wondering what kind of camera, lenses, etc were used to take this picture. I wouldn't want to carry all that I would need of my camera stuff on a walk in the woods. There has to be an easier way.

By Rose, Channahon IL on Friday, October 17, 2003 - 11:31 am:

Is that possibly a baby Great Gray Owl? We saw an adult one in Copper Harbor on the road to the Clark Mine a couple of years ago! That was the one and only time we have seen one. I am sure if you ask Jim Rooks from the Bear Track Tours in Copper Harbor he will be able to identify this for sure!

Mr DeGraves,
Please fill us in on how you came across the opportunity to take this wonderful picture and what happened to the chick after you were done.

Vivian at Chattem in Chattanooga, we are glad you are enjoying looking at all of the wonderful pictures on Pasty Cam! Isn't this little one a cutie? Dianne's Mom (Fran)

So darn cute. Great Photo!

Pasty Cam: The fix that always satisfies! No calories, no side effects, just good stuff!

By Ann Hilton Fisher, Illinois on Friday, October 17, 2003 - 01:05 pm:

I'm pretty sure that this is a Barred Owl, one of the U.P.'s most common. If you use the Google "immages" search for Barred Owl you'll find lots of other photos that look a lot like this one. The hoot is very recognizable, sometimes transcribed along the lines of "who, who, who, cooks for you all."

By Tex on Friday, October 17, 2003 - 03:39 pm:

I got lucky! Right place, right time. This little guy was not scared, just the opposite with threatening gestures! I don't know what became of him. I left him standing right there. Let mother nature take care of her own.

By Leslie on Friday, October 17, 2003 - 04:35 pm:

Thanks, Tex. Just like a Cub fan (can't speak for those Red Sox fans). We may look scared, but we're not. We still got ... next year. (And we had a great this year!)

By pj.mi on Friday, October 17, 2003 - 09:51 pm:

I agree with Michelle - this is really a keeper for the calendar! Great picture!

By Wanna be Yooper on Friday, October 17, 2003 - 10:10 pm:

In all my life, I never saw an owl in the Keweenaw. This is interesting to learn that there are indeed owls up north. Are they coming back as the mentality "to shoot everything that moves" dies out?

By Ken from da UP on Friday, October 17, 2003 - 10:59 pm:

My, what big feet and claws he/she has. :>)

By Ken from da UP, on Friday, October 17, 2003 - 11:01 pm:

Pytavay, where da hecks is Toivo and Charlie? 'Eh?

By Toivo from Toivola on Friday, October 17, 2003 - 11:26 pm:

Ken, as for me I'm right here, but I tink it's past Charlie's bedtime up in Eagle River.

By ShawnR, GR MI on Friday, October 17, 2003 - 11:27 pm:

My husband (then boyfriend) and I saw a snow owl on Brockway Mountain. I'll never forget it. We were students at Tech and it was starting to seem like spring so we decided to go Copper Country Cruising, hoping to catch a view of spring from Brockway Mountain. When we got there, the 'road closed' sign was still up. We didn't see any snow on the road, so we drove around the sign and headed up Brockway Mountain drive. As we drove on, we started seeing some snow - no big deal, my Plymouth Satellite was a tank going thru the snow. We got to the top without a problem and then noticed this big white owl circling over us. He was so beautiful! We watched him for awhile and then headed down the Copper Harbor side. Before too long we were seeing some good-sized drifts across the road, but with my trusty Satellite and the benefit of gravity, we got thru some big ones. But if you recall, it isn't all downhill driving down Brockway Mountain drive. We were starting to wonder if we were going to get stuck! But the whole way, the owl would fly down ahead of us, stop in a tree and watch us drive thru the snow. Then as we passed, he'd fly down further, stop and watch us again. This went on the whole way down to M-26. Luckily we made it without getting stuck - pretty amazing the drifts that Satellite got thru! And that owl watched us the whole way. If it weren't for him distracting us, I surely would have worried myself sick over the road! Oh the silly things we do as youth!

A few years ago there were two of these owls that nested near the "Blue Trail" that winds between Keweenaw Mountain Park (the golf course) and Lake Manganese. You had to know where to expect to see them because they fly almost silently. I did get a picture of them but I don't know where it is. I hope to go back there next year and try to find that nesting area.

Also, when I was 5 years old my family stayed at the Eagle's Nest which is a large old house at the top of Garden City Hill at Eagle River. We had no lights other than oil lamps which were very dim and one dark night, as I entered my bedroom, I spotted one of these owls looking in the window. I hold the world's record for flying back down into the kitchen.

Ok, all you Yooper Finns.....I need help. My usual source of info from the Copper Country has not gotten me the answer (tsk, tsk) to a couple of simple (hopefully) questions on Finn words/names. Here it goes, I need to know the proper spelling for John and/or Johnny in Finn. Also want to know if Muttie..Mutty (?) means anything in particular in Finn...perhaps a nickname. Also, what is the word for Hi, Hello in Finn as well as Goodbye , so long, whatever. Does anyone know of a source I can check for this kind of information on the internet? Haven't had much success to date with what I have found. While I'm at it, how 'bout Bud or Simon in Finn?? Don't recall my dad being called anything in Finn but Gramma who was from Finland must have had a name for him as she spoke Finn while living with our family until her death. I do know sort of how to say bad boy and bad girl to my four grandchildren...which amuses them. Can anyone tell me how to say "good boy, girl..."

Sorry this has been so long, have been meaning to do this for some time now. And while I'm at it...how about William...:>)

Kiitos to anyone/all who might be able to assist me.

Sally (Twin B)

When was this photo taken? Back in the spring I would suppose. There should be no "baby" owls of any species this late in the fall at that age/developement. Very unusual if so! Yes it does look like a Great Gray, however it most surely is a Barred Owl "strix varia". All other Owls in MI that look like that have yellow eyes. Fairly common thruout Michigan, more so in the north regions. Yes the "shoot everything that moves" attitude is dying out but not fast enough unfortunately. There is still plenty that feel that way even down here in the SE of MI including the suburban areas. We see the "Snowy Owls" down here frequently every winter.
Shawn, Old Indian legends say that when an Owl or Hawk do things as you experienced or are regularly seen around your home watching you, or if one approachs you very close, that is your guardian angel IN the Owl or Hawk looking out for you!!!

By Russ E. St. Clair county MI on Saturday, October 18, 2003 - 01:50 am:

Sally: "bahaa doota"= bad girl; "bahaa boyka"= bad boy. Don't know if my spelling is correct but close enough I hope! I remember my mother and grandmother using those terms long again! I'm sure others will jump in with the others you asked about. I can say hello greeting and goodbye but couldn't begin to spell them for proper enunciation! WOW!

By Catherine---Holland, MI on Saturday, October 18, 2003 - 11:04 pm:

Sally, I'm no expert but here goes:

John--Jussi (YOOS-si)

Hi, Hello--Paiva (BY-va)

See you later--Nakemiin (NAH-kay-meen)

girl--tytto (this is a hard one! "Y"s are like a French "U" in "tu", if that helps...2 dots over the "O" to gutteralize it like an uumlaut:TUI-tuh)

boy--poika (BOY-ka, like whoever said)

bad--probably starts with a "P"-- paha maybe?

That about cleans me out in the Finn department. I gave up when I hit the genitive case (genitivii).

My family's favorites:

raganuuka--snotnose (roll "R"s like in Spanish, all in the tongue tip)

hatahousu--ants in your pants (guessed on that spelling)

mukara--baloney

All you need for a refined conversation!

By Owl Grrl on Sunday, October 19, 2003 - 03:00 pm:

Yes, s/he is a Barred Owl.

For lots more on these, go to owlcam.com. The site is active March - June but several years of owltales are archived there.

SO CUTE!!!!!!! That is a real cute little owl, I would just like to take it in my arms and hold on to it, like a stuffed animal. But I know that can't be done. That is an awesome picture!

By Derek,Michigan on Monday, October 20, 2003 - 08:26 pm:

This is an awesome pic. of the owl!

By RD White MN on Tuesday, October 21, 2003 - 08:19 am:

This photo is priceless; we all share life on this planet, whether we are human or non-human animals, and we all have our place here.

By fy on Tuesday, October 21, 2003 - 12:26 pm:

A quick point. There never was a "shoot anything that moves mentality" in the Yoop. It was "shoot to eat." The "shoot anything that moves" mentality comes from the "city-boy wanna-bes"

By Toledo, Ohio on Wednesday, October 22, 2003 - 09:40 pm:

Right on! FY! There are still some young Barred owls around. We heard an immature one last Sat. night, near Paradise. During summer, we always hear owls around Helmer.

Please let me know.
