When most people think of the Upper Peninsula, Lake Superior and Lake Michigan come to mind. But Leslie from the Northern Lights Lodge reminds us that Lake Huron bounds the U.P. on the eastern end. And this particular day there was hardly a breeze blowing near Drummond Island.

The travel adventure of your weekday Pasty Cam editor is taking him to quite a different island, and we don't mean Hawaii. On the flight from Anchorage to Honolulu Friday night, it seems Toivo got bumped at the stopover in Seattle, earning a free ticket, and he took an alternate connection to Los Angeles. But, wouldn't you know, with typical yooper ingenuity, he volunteered again for standby, and ended up with enough vouchers to trade up to an international round-trip to: (ready for this?) New Zealand. His message yesterday mumbled something about getting his money's worth out of a passport and having all of his shots up to date. His ETOA for Auckland is Monday evening local time, which is probably right about now here in the Eastern U.S... Stay tuned for updates from our traveling Toivo, as he explores New Zealand, "The Land of the Long White Cloud"

Which, come to think of it, goes right along with today's Pasty Cam :o)

Congratulations to Mooch and the boys. I think Harrington and Rogers will be a very potent combination in this league when all is said and done.

A few weeks ago we enjoyed a family vacation in the U.P. I think we traveled all the roads between Houghton and Copper Harbor (including a dirt road between Delaware and Eagle Harbor that I never knew existed). It was a beautiful week!

However, one thing has been on my mind since the trip. When we were at Chutes & Ladders in Houghton (great fun for the kids), I noticed that the plumbing in the bathrooms was galvanized steel. Of course, my first thought was, "Is there some kind of copper shortage up here?"

I would have expected the entire Copper Country to ban galvanized piping in favor of copper! :)

The State of Michigan touches 4 of the Great Lakes: Lake Michigan, Lake Superior, Lake Huron, and Lake Erie.

I'm asking for prayers for a wonderful person that is dyiing of cancer. She has so much faith that I want people to know and help her in her struggle. She is at a Hospice Center now and needs strength to go on. All treatment seems to be failing so could you all just take a moment and ask The Lord to ease her pain and help her Physicaly, Mentaly and Spiritually. She is only 52 years old and has family that are needing prayers also. Thank you

To Mary in Lake Linden. May we have a first name to pray for?

By Dee, Lake Linden, MI on Monday, September 8, 2003 - 02:11 pm:

Mary, My thoughts and prayers will be said today for your friend and her family. I know how hard it is to face such a struggle. I will ask others to pray for them also.

To Jim Grill:
They were talking about the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and the Lakes that touch this peninsula. But you are right as far as the whole state of MI. The state of Michigan is a beautiful state all the way around.

By Janie, Ia. on Monday, September 8, 2003 - 07:38 pm:

Dear Mary: May your dear friend find the blessings to help her wth her with her healings. I hope for a miracle for her. Keep your faith in the Almighty!

Geez....Whoopie. The Lions beat the Arizona Cardinals !!!!
Still a joke of a team. Tough schedule coming up in the next few weeks.
They'll probably/maybee beat the Packers, but after that one, lookout...
Who will they blame their losing season on this year ?

By Nita, Northwestern CA on Monday, September 8, 2003 - 08:49 pm:

Hey Toivo,
Way to go! Not only do you have Yooper ingenuity
but you also seem to make very quick and probably very good decisions most of the time, plus the spirit of adventure. A truly great combination.
Enjoy your adventures, wherever they take you.

We should all be so lucky.
Wishing I could be doing the same.

God be with you.

By Sandy, Monroe, MI on Monday, September 8, 2003 - 09:52 pm:

Dear Mary,
We will remember you and your friend in prayer...for her healing and whatever miracle the Lord has in mind for her, and for you...for strength and wisdom as you comfort and stand by her. Please check out a group called Silent Unity. The operator there will offer a beautiful prayer when you call, then place your request in a prayer room, where it, along with other requests, will receive 24 hour prayer for 30 days. Awesome power. 800.669.7729. They are on-line, too, but I'd recommend an actual call at least the first time.

Football, plumbing, prayer requests, and world travel on a shoestring. This site never ceases to amaze me.

Chris,
The use of the galvanized piping is evidence enough of the Copper Contry's noble attempt at diversification. Ever since we've been taught about the benefits of diversification we've whole-heartedly agreed. Diversification and the acceptance-thereof, will eventually bring about a kind of participatory democracy, world-wide-like, a kind of looking forward utopia, all due to diversification.

An' jus' as soon as someone comes by and informs us about this theory they call the free market and individualization, (rumors, rumors, crowd noises, munching munching)well, we may just turn diversification on its head and realize we are as individual as our thumbprints.

Much of this information can be found within The Underground History of American History, by John Taylor Gatto, and The Dumbing Down of America by Charlotte Iserbyt.

Would like to ask for prayers for the recovery of Sandi Patana who is hospitalized after the accident which killed her wonderful, funny, zany, talented husband, Dick Patana, a yooper musician. He shared his music with us in Florida and in the UP. We will miss his music, his joy, his presence!
