Voting on the Pasty Cam 2004 Calendar is taking place over in the Guest Gallery, where I found this vacation masterpiece by Norm (Lampliter) Hettinger. Also it is part of this neat slide show from Norman.

Wonder if all the Pasty Cam watchers out east have their power back yet?

Sometime back there was a picture from Copper Harbor with a sign about breathing the Purest Air with some discussion to follow, Can anyone tell me any keys for looking back thru the archives so I can locate that day ? Thanks, Sam

By Kathy on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 06:39 am:

The archives are very organized. Just go into "Search the archives" and type in a key word such as "purest air" I found your photo and discussion posted September 3, 2001.

By Thankful, Mid-Michigan on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 07:00 am:

For those of us in Troll land that do have power let's bow our heads and say a small thank you Lord. For those who don't let's offer a helping hand. I am sure we all know somebody who could use our assistance.

A small hint.. Livingston County (which is easily accessed by most of Michigan's affected areas)has power and ICE & WATER & even still some gas. So pack up your cars folks and take some to your friends & family when you go down to the Woodward Dream Cruise this weekend.

By Troll in E.H. on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 07:30 am:

THANKFUL...I have a lot of friends in the Howell area.Worked 20 years in a machine shop there...If you run into Igg Knorr or Craig Horton tell them the TROLL IN EAGLE HARBOR says hi.

By JWilson, Ohio on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 08:30 am:

I live south of Cleveland and we are not affected...Cleveland not only didn't have lights, they lost water too because of electric pumps. Today they have water buffalos...big tankers with water...throughout the area but the downtown area is still closed until noon. What a mess! Akron was also affected but, they were back up later last night; it has been terrible hot with high humidity here too, so I feel for those who can't use their A/C. We spent 3 weeks in the U.P. & didn't need need it for sure! Mother nature's natural air conditioning from Lake Superior!!

By lk, MI on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 10:12 am:

I heard that the Dream Cruise was canceled. The lines at the gas stations this a.m. in Howell are a mile and a half long! A little heat in the U.P. doesn't sound so bad anymore.

By RJZ Wisconsin on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 10:38 am:

It is great to see these images of the U. P. Hope to visit again soon.

By Melissa, Lansing, MI on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 10:41 am:

I'm happy to report that our power is back on in Lansing, as of 2am. The AC has never felt so wonderful. I had a final at 8am this morning and had to study by candlelight!

By DJB-MI. on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 10:57 am:

CONSERVE ELECTRICITY OR WE'LL ALL BE IN THE DARK.
WE HAVE RUN OUT OF POWER DUE TO TOO MANY ELECTRICAL DEVICES- ESPECIALLY AIR CONDITIONERS. THERE COULD BE RATIONING AS IN WW II.

By melissa in lansing on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 12:01 pm:

I agree and don't want this happening again. Once the house cooled the AC was shut off.

By Missin the UP from NJ on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 12:06 pm:

Electric was out in my area for only 6 hrs. Thank God for my mechanically inclined hubby who acquired a used generator a few years back and fixed it. We were able to keep our fridge running and have light till our electric was back.
Prayers to those in the LP and Ohio and other areas that are still waiting.

About now, I wish we had one of those beautiful, giant, white windmills like I saw in Northern Wisconson in my (little) back yard!

By Tony - St. Charles, MO on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 12:15 pm:

Correct me if I am wrong! Looking at the bridge cam, I would say the picture is taken from the Handcock side. As I do not see the Quincy mine.

By Drew, MN on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 12:56 pm:

Melissa,
Don't worry too much about the AC, we don't want to end up like the French now do we? Hope school is going well. Ready for Isle Royale yet?

By Down under in troll-land on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 01:17 pm:

Tony in MO--
This is a photo of the "Big Mac" bridge taken from the Mackinaw City side.

By Tony - St. Charles, MO on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 01:51 pm:

No,No! I'm not talking about the Big Mac bridge in Mackinaw City. Asking about the lift bridge between Houghton and Hancock.
Where is the picture of the bridge being taken
as I see it on the "Bridge Cam" Hancock or Houghton?

By Drew, MN on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 02:13 pm:

Tony,
This picture is taken from the Hancock side, the building in the lower right hand corner is the Hancock Ramada Inn. If you look at the end of the bridge you can also see the start of the Yooper Loop.

By Steve, Il. on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 02:17 pm:

Tony in Mo. The bridgecam is in the front window of a pastycammer in Hancock.

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 02:25 pm:

Tony,

The Bridge Cam is in the top floor of the large white home across the street from Dave's Marathon in Hancock. The parking lot you see in the foreground is the Hancock Ramada Inn, and the stone building to the right of the bridge on the other side it the old Power House, which now is the Smart Zone. By the way, these are two good examples of websites which are hosted by Pasty.NET, and listed here at Pasty Central: www.ramadahancock.com and mtecsmart.com (under construction)

Hancock Side it is....

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 02:26 pm:

Wow, in the time it took me to type the message, a couple of other Cammies jumped right in with the answer. Thanks guys.

By Amy, in da U.P. for now on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 04:07 pm:

I am vacationing in Houghton, but will head home early to clean out all the spoiled stuff in my fridge back home. Hopefully the power will be back on by the time I get home tomorrow. :( Luckily, I have great neighbors who are taking care of my kitties in the heat.

By Doug the Troll on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 04:19 pm:

I-75 Northbound is a parking lot at Flint. I think all of us with no power are headed that way to escape the heat. May not be going all the way to da U.P., but North none the less.

I had to drive to Flint for work, since my office is dark in Troy. Hopefully home will be better by the time I leave later tonight.

By Mary, Lemoore CA on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 04:58 pm:

Tony,

You are correct, it is from the Hancock side. It has been so long since I lived up there, I want to know what that parking lot is at the bottom of the bridge (Hancock side). Is it a hotel or something?

By Mary CA on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 04:59 pm:

oops, I guess I should have read more of the postings. Sorry folks!

By Mary, CA on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 05:06 pm:

Me again. I talked to my sister in Dearborn Heights about an hour ago. When I talked to her, they had power for about an hour. My brother in law is a on the police force in Detroit. He was called in last night and worked until wee hours in the morning. He is getting ready to go back out again. She said it was warm last night and they slept in the basement.

By Sam on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 05:35 pm:

Thank You Kathy !

By Livingston County Troll on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 05:41 pm:

IK The Dream Cruise is still on just heard it on WJR the god of radio stations down here in SE Michigan.

Troll in EH I live in Howell but have to say neither name rings a bell. But then again this community has grown so much in the past 16 years that it does not surprise me. In fact that is why in a few weeks I am moving about 22 miles north to a smaller town. At this rate I will make it to the UP when I am 120!

By Tom the Troll on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 05:50 pm:

I have reservations at the Ramada for a couple of nights next week. Can anyone tell me the best time to go out into the parking lot and act goofy so I can be on the Bridgecam?

By Kerry, Mi on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 05:57 pm:

well I'm happy in certain parts of S.E. Michigan are back on as I have power here. but no running water at least till tomorrow or late weekend at the most. Power I heard was out as far a Thunder Bay. and Mackinaw City from the radio that is what I had heard.

By melissa in lansing on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 06:28 pm:

Hey there Drew! Are you back from Isle Royale? Drop me a line, I want to hear how your trip was. I'm headed to Houghton next Thursday, leaving for IR Sunday morning. I can't wait! One more final to go....had to have the AC on for a while so I could sleep, its just too darn hot and humid--can't wait to get to the nice weather in the UP!

Liv. Cty Troll--I'm also a WJR fan. They are reporting that the Dream Cruise is on and the LP state fair will start tomorrow.

By At home at last in the UP on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 06:28 pm:

I hope all you wonderful pasty cam folks don't mind me taking a second to say "Hi" to my beloved husband in ND. I have finally made the move to the UP but he has to wait a few weeks back in ND until our home is sold.
We have visited the pasty cam daily for 2 years now and I know this will be a good oportunity to connect with Mike while we're apart.
It gives me a warm feeling to know that we are sharing a similar experience when we see the newest gorgeous photo here. I miss you, hon. Hurry home, Love Geri

By AČ, Royal Oak on Saturday, August 16, 2003 - 01:55 am:

Just got the power back on around 12:40 a.m. today. Power went off yesterday at 4:15 p.m. Am so thankful and thanking God. Hope the meat in the freezer will be OK. Haven't put on the AC because I'm just grateful for power for the fridge and freezer. Sure is awful to be without power. TV cable doesn't work yet but hopefully tomorrow. Best wishes to all. AČ

By Kevin K. Lodi.Ca on Saturday, August 16, 2003 - 06:19 am:

Now the big question from the left coast?????
Will there be a baby boom back East next May????

By eyes wide shut on Saturday, August 16, 2003 - 11:43 am:

I for one, am not reassured by claims that the power outage was not caused by terrorists. This means that our infrastructure is crumbling on it's own, due in large part to deregulation and the profit gouging practices of our energy producers, who all want big fat paychecks and divedends but aren't doing all they should into upgrading our energy networks. I think we were safer from massive failures when we had many more smaller independent power companies. Our government has been warned for quite some time about the possibility and opportunity for massive debilitating outages.

By Ray Albuquerque NM. on Sunday, August 17, 2003 - 12:22 am:

We have a power problem because of regulations that make it difficult to build new power plants. If it was money grubbers controlling everything they would want to build more plants to sell power to us. Do you have any idea of the cost and time to do an environmental impact statement before anything can be built? Check it out sometime. Its also affecting our oil and gas supplies. No new refinerys built in our country for many years now. Maybe the ban mining let them freeze in the dark bumper stickers are coming true.

By Troll Diva Ferndale, Michigan on Sunday, August 17, 2003 - 02:06 pm:

Finally having power, this is one of the first sites that I had to check. Mackinaw's lighthouse and view of the bridge!Made my day.

By Troll, Lower MI, south of Detroit on Sunday, August 17, 2003 - 10:27 pm:

Doubt that there will be a baby boom from this power outage....considering we were all hot and sweaty from the weather and "fragrant" from waiting for the AC to come back on....can't say those were romantic conditions enough to warrant a baby boom. Couldn't even jump in the lake for a little skinny dipping....OUR lake is pretty smelly and nothing like the pristine Superior.
We survived, and did pretty well considering. Folks were much nicer to each other than what the news reporters made them out to be. Don't believe everything you hear from those people. If there isn't something to report, they just have to dream it up. (businesses in our area were passing out ice cream before it all went bad...wanted someone to enjoy it and cool off at the same time--but THAT wasn't on the news)
